Here we are in Italy - Amalfi Coast - Part 3 Ravello
This is a travelogue of our 2010 vacation in the Amalfi Coast area of Italy in seven parts, showing what we did and what travel around the Amalfi Coast is like.
In part three we take a drive down the spectacular Amalfi Coast to Ravello where we explore two Garden Villas and admire the views.
Taxi services offer a great value for day trips around the Amalfi Coast and are the best way to experience the area. We met another couple on the train (we tourists are easy to spot) who were also staying in Positano and arranged to share a taxi service together to Amalfi and Ravello. The cost was reasonable when shared and renting a car is not advisable on the narrow busy coastal roads. I have unfortunately lost my notebook with the name of the Taxi Service but our Driver, Gianluca (Gianluca if you read this please email!) was marvellous.

Walking Tour of Praiano down to Casa Angelina Suites and Beach
Follow along as I trek down 465,982 steps (approximately) from the street level of Praiano to the beach. This was an incredible little village on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, and had so many little areas and shops to explore.
We stayed at Casa Angelina in their Eau de Sea suites which was INCREDIBLE. You have to hike those steps everyday so all beers netted to 0 calories!

Places to see in ( Amalfi Coast - Italy ) Positano
Places to see in ( Amalfi Coast - Italy ) Positano
Positano is a cliffside village on southern Italy's Amalfi Coast. It's a well-known holiday destination with a pebble beachfront and steep, narrow streets lined with boutiques and cafes. Its Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta features a majolica-tiled dome and a 13th-century Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary. The Sentiero degli Dei hiking trail links Positano to other coastal towns.
Positano is the Amalfi Coast's most photogenic (and expensive) town, with vertiginous houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta. No less colourful are its steep streets and steps, flanked by wisteria-draped hotels, smart restaurants and fashionable retailers. Look beyond the facades and the fashion, however, and you will find reassuring signs of everyday reality: crumbling stucco, streaked paintwork and even, on occasion, a faint whiff of drains.
There’s still a southern-Italian holiday feel about the place, with sunbathers eating pizza on the beach, kids pestering parents for gelato and chic signore from Milan browsing the boutiques. The fashionista history runs deep – moda Positano was born here in the ’60s and the town was the first in Italy to import bikinis from France.
Positano was a port of the Amalfi Republic in medieval times, and prospered during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. By the mid-nineteenth century, however, the town had fallen on hard times. More than half the population emigrated, mostly to America.
Positano was a relatively poor fishing village during the first half of the twentieth century. It began to attract large numbers of tourists in the 1950s, especially after John Steinbeck published his essay about Positano in Harper's Bazaar in May, 1953: Positano bites deep, Steinbeck wrote. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.
The church of Santa Maria Assunta features a dome made of majolica tiles as well as a thirteenth-century Byzantine icon of a black Madonna. According to local legend, the icon had been stolen from Byzantium and was being transported by pirates across the Mediterranean. A terrible storm had blown up in the waters opposite Positano and the frightened sailors heard a voice on board saying Posa, posa! (Put down! Put down!). The precious icon was unloaded and carried to the fishing village and the storm abated.
Positano has been featured in several films, including Only You (1994), and Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), as well as more recently in Kath & Kimderella (2012) and being mentioned in the 2009 musical film Nine in the song Cinema Italiano. It also hosts the annual Cartoons on the Bay Festival, at which Pulcinella Awards for excellence in animation are presented.
From July 1967 and through most of the 1970s, Positano was home to singer-songwriter Shawn Phillips and where most of his best-known work was composed. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards from The Rolling Stones wrote the song Midnight Rambler in the cafes of Positano while on vacation.
Renowned director and producer Franco Zeffirelli owned the Villa Treville in Positano, where he took residence over a 35-year period and hosted a coterie of literati and stars of the stage and screen. He hired his friend, Renzo Mongiardino, who collaborated on many of his theater and opera projects, to design the exquisite interiors which reflect the local design sensibilities and craftsmanship. The Villa Treville has since been converted into a five-star boutique hotel

Ep 19 Welcome To Positano, Italy Amalfi Coast - White Collar Vagabond
We made it to beautiful Positano, Italy. We're staying at casa Cuccaro in the village of Nocelle. We had to take 1700 stairs down to positano, great exercise! We enjoyed great pasta dishes and incredibly good house wine. We visited art galleries, did some jewelry shopping (local artists), bought some local hand made ceramics and then took the bus back up to Nocelle...
Nocelle is a bonny, antique hamlet of Positano, rising at 400 mt above sea-level, where to enjoy a peaceful, resting stay far away from the urban chaos. A lovely 1700 steps flight, leads to Positano, reachable in a few minutes through outstanding panoramas that will leave you breathless!
Nocelle is definitely situated in a key strategic position that, specially in the past, allowed to dominate and monitor a very big coastal territory, avoiding piratical incursions.
For trekking lovers, Nocelle is indeed a little paradise, thanks to the dozens of excursions throughout Lattari Mountains that start from there. The most popular hiking trail is Sentiero degli Dei (Walk of the Gods), particularly interesting and scenic is in fact the part between Grotta Biscotto and Nocelle, that is one of the best ways to better view the entire Amalfi Coast.
The Path starts from Bomerano, hamlet of Agerola, and passing for Grotta del Biscotto (524 mt) and many other enlargements (used as repositories) you will go onward towards Colle della Serra (578 mt) where the Path bifurcates: from the left side it goes down to Praiano, from the right side straight towards Nocelle (420 mt).
The journey snakes itself into chalky stratifications, with breath-taking views.
Once arrived at the fountain, take the first right which leads to the path towards Montepertuso.
The paved road from Montepertuso leads you directly to the SS Amalfitana, which is the main road that connects all the villages of the Amalfi Coast, from Salerno all the way up to Sorrento.
Gorgeous excursions could be done walking through the old Medieval Bridge, which overlooks Vallone Porto.
