Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant, A Journey Back
The Ambuklao Hydroelectric Plant is the Philippines' first hydroelectric plant. It is located in the mountains of Bokod, Benguet and is about 36 kilometers northeast of Baguio City. The plant has three 25 megawatt generating units that provide energy to the majority of the Luzon grid. It utilizes the the flow of the Agno River, the longest waterway in Luzon. The Majestic Ambuklao Dam Eight Gates Open
The Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant is one of the oldest power plants in the country and was among the first large hydroelectric power plants constructed in the Philippines. The development of the Agno River for purposes of hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and irrigation had been conceived as early as the late 1940s. Preliminary investigations for development at Ambuklao and Binga Dam sites were undertaken as early as January 1948. Running along the upper portion of the Agno River, Ambuklao Hydro was constructed for power generation and flood control.
In July 1990, a massive earthquake hit Luzon, resulting in siltation and technical problems that affected the plant’s operations. Ambuklao was eventually decommissioned in 1999.
SN Aboitiz Power-Benguet, Inc. (SNAP-Benguet) won on November 28, 2007, the public bid for Ambuklao and its neighboring power facility Binga, which were sold as a package under the power sector privatization program of the Philippine government. SNAP-Benguet is a joint venture between SN Power of Norway, and AboitizPower.
SNAP-Benguet began a massive rehabilitation project that restored Ambuklao to operating status and increased its capacity from 75 MW to 105 MW. The project required the construction of a new intake, headrace and penstock, elevation of tailrace tunnel outlet, de-silting of tailrace tunnel and replacement of electro-mechanical components. In June 2011, Unit 3 became the first turbine unit to go on-line, followed by the other two units. Ambuklao was formally inaugurated in October 2011.
Ambuklao is designed as a peaking plant and is capable of delivering energy and providing ancillary services needed to stabilize the grid.

Pinoy Joyride - Benguet Nueva Vizcaya Road (Aritao to Benguet - Ambuclao Dam)
Another dream ride accomplished! This is the Benguet Nueva Vizcaya Road, from Aritao Nueva Vizcaya going up the mountainous zig zag curved roads passing towns of Kayapa , Bokod up to Ambuklao ending in Baguio City. In this route one could see the beautiful mountains of the Cordillera Mountain Range and the nice vantage point of Ambuklao Dam. Along the road see the Agno River and Santa Cruz River. This route has many curves and the road pavement was good. It was a long drive from Aritao to Baguio.
Road Condition - Good paved roads and many zig zags / curve roads. Possible to get dizzy :-)
Drive thrill - Relaxing trail, enjoy the views, open the windows, cold breeze in most parts of the ride / few incoming cars
Security - So far safe driving on daylight / I don't know about evening, many towns along the route
Rating: 5/5 :-)

Pinoy Joyride - Magat Dam Joyride
This is the third part of my Baler - Aurora - Quirino - Isabela Joyride. Reaching Santiago City I decided to make a side trip to Magat Dam before calling it a night at Santiago. Luckily weather cooperated and i had an afternoon relaxing moment at Magat Dam which is situated in Ramon Isabela and a part of it on Alfonso Lista - Ifugao.
Please be reminded that Magat Dam has no fly zones like the dam gate area , no drones are allowed to fly there.
