There are many Tokyo Street Food areas, but what sets Ameya Yokocho Market from the rest of the Japanese street food markets in Tokyo is that it has a healthy mix of international foods, especially Chinese food. The Ameyoko Food is one of a kind and Japan tourists and travelers of all ages will enjoy the unique market food offerings as well as the market style atmosphere. Ameyoko Food Tours are common, but I would like to share with you my favorite food spots in this What to Eat Guide in Tokyo Ueno Ameya Yokocho. We try Chinese Oden, Sho ron tan pao, Fresh seafood crab, Yaki Shoronpo, Korean Cheese Hot Dog, Takoyaki and Menchi Katsu.
Ameya-Yokochō (アメヤ横丁 Ameya alley) is an open-air market in the Taito Ward of Tokyo, Japan, located next to Ueno Station.The market is approximately 164,227 square feet in area, starting just behind the Yodobashi Camera building and following the Yamanote Line south until the Komuro building.
There are two theories on the etymology of Ameya. The first is that the name came from ameya (飴屋 candy shop), because of all the candy stores that lined the street in the early post-war era when sugar was hard to come by. Even now, there are stores selling candy there. The second theory is that it refers to アメリカ(America); there used to be stores selling surplus American army goods just after World War II. In either case, it is now commonly referred to simply as ameyoko (アメ横).
The market is home to over one hundred and eighty one shops, which sell products ranging from fresh food and fish to clothing and time pieces.
Traditional Ueno is known for its ornate shrines, including 17th-century Benzaiten temple, which stands on an island in Ueno Park. Nearby, the open-air Ameya-Yokochō market sells a vast range of food, clothes and accessories.

Tokyo Street Food Market Experience | Ameyoko ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Tokyo's Ameyoko Market is the city's street food paradise. There is no debate. The market street runs for 400 meters along the Yamanote Line from Okachimachi to Ueno Station. There are hundreds of shops selling all kinds of delicious foods but its the market's past that makes it unique.
▶︎ HISTORY
Ameyoko was Tokyo's black market during the US Occupation between 1945 and 1952, a place where you could get expensive and highly regulated goods like sugar.
▶︎ The Ame in Ameyoko means CANDY in Japanese.
But ame also stands for AMErica since the market sold so many good broght in by US Servicemen during the occupation. You can still see sun glasses, watches, and Zippo lighters sold on the street to this day.
The market has changed a lot over the last 75 years.
After being a black market, it became home to Tohoku's seafood in the 1950s since nearby Ueno is the city's gate to the north of the country. In the 1970s and 80s, immigrants from abroad made their homes in the area and there is a growing variety of foods. With more tourists flooding the market, stands are converting from shops to restaurants at night, tables spilling into the streets.

TRIP IN JAPAN Ameya Yokocho is JR Okachimachi station in Taito-ku, Tokyo. - About about 400m shopping center longwise extended along the elevated west side in Yamanote Line between Ueno and a station. Although it is generally called in Ameyoko, Ueno Ameyoko, the Ameyoko shopping center, etc. and a common name in many cases and is displayed also on the signboard of the shopping center as Ameyoko, surely, it is the Ameyoko shopping center joint association, and consists of 400 or more stores.

I couldn't find any information on the website for this food stall but it's fairly easy to find. It's right under the train tracks about halfway down the Ameyoko Street between Ueno Station and the next big street where the large department store called Matsuzakaya.

This is a yakitori stand run by one man so although he's usually operating, his hours depend on his personal schedule. However the yakitori he makes is pretty impressive. His stand is located among the other food stands that line the street leading up towards Bentendo temple.
9. Ueno Mori no Panya san (Bakery)
This bakery has tons of cute edible creations and they are delicious! This bakery is located across from Ueno Station in a complex called L'Ueno with a whole bunch of other eateries.

meyoko (アメ横) is a busy market street along the Yamanote Line tracks between Okachimachi and Ueno Stations. The name Ameyoko is a short form for Ameya Yokocho (candy store alley), as candies were traditionally sold there. Alternatively, Ame also stands for America, because a lot of American products used to be available there when the street was the site of a black market in the years following World War Two.

There is crowded with people who buy such as fresh food for the New Year in particular the end of the year.
