Stanley Fish in Conversation with Ilan Stavans at Amherst College
Is Truth Doomed in the Age of Trump? And Is Free Speech in Peril?
llan Stavans, the Lewis-Sebring Professor of Humanities and Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College, joined Stanley Fish, American literary theorist, legal scholar and author, for a discussion about free speech on college campuses.
Stanley Fish is the Floersheimer Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at Yeshiva University and is a world-renowned literary theorist and legal scholar. Professor Fish’s literary theory has been particularly associated with neopragmatism, where practice is advanced over theory, and with the interpretive relationships between literature and law.
Ilan Stavans is the Lewis-Sebring Professor in Humanities and Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College. He is an internationally known, award-winning cultural critic, linguist, translator, public speaker, editor, short-story writer, and TV host, whose New York Times best-selling work focuses on language, identity, politics and history.
Empire of Borders: Book launch
Todd Miller, author of “Empire of Borders: The Expansion of the US Border Around the World,” in conversation with Thanu Yakupitiyage (350.org), Abraham Paulos (Black Alliance for Just Immigration), and Camille J. Mackler (New York Immigration Coalition).
Recorded at Verso Books in Brooklyn on October 19, 2019.
“Empire of Borders” is available from Verso Books:
(Due to technical problems, portions of Abraham Paulos’s and Camille J. Mackler’s talks are unavailable around the 30-minute mark.)
The twenty-first century has witnessed the rapid hardening of international borders. Security, surveillance, and militarization are widening the chasm between those who travel where they please and those whose movements are restricted. But that is only part of the story.
As journalist Todd Miller reveals in “Empire of Borders,” the nature of US borders has changed. These boundaries have effectively expanded thousands of miles outside of US territory to encircle not simply American land but Washington’s interests. Resources, training, and agents from the United States infiltrate the Caribbean and Central America; they reach across the Canadian border; and they go even farther afield, enforcing the division between Global South and North.
In Syria, Guatemala, Kenya, Palestine, Mexico, the Philippines, and elsewhere, Miller finds that borders aren’t making the world safe—they are the frontline in a global war against the poor.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Todd Miller has researched and written about border issues for more than 15 years, the last eight as an independent journalist and writer. He resides in Tucson, Arizona, but also has spent many years living and working in Oaxaca, Mexico. His work has appeared in the New York Times, TomDispatch, The Nation, San Francisco Chronicle, In These Times, Guernica, and Al Jazeera English, among other places. Miller has authored three books: Empire of Borders: The Expansion of the U.S. Border Around the World (Verso, 2019), Storming the Wall: Climate Change, Migration, and Homeland Security (City Lights, 2017), and Border Patrol Nation: Dispatches from the Front Lines of Homeland Security (City Lights, 2014). He’s a contributing editor on border and immigration issues for NACLA Report on the Americas and its column “Border Wars”.

PLEASE NOTE: Regrettably, Linda Darling-Hammond is unable to participate in this panel.
In 1968, the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders – known as the Kerner Commission— issued a report with a stark warning: The United States was becoming two societies, one white, one black, separate and unequal. Critics observed that the nation was already separate and unequal. The Commission called for sweeping investments in jobs, education, and housing to reduce poverty, inequality, and racial injustice.
Fifty years later, a new report from the Eisenhower Foundation finds that things aren’t much better — and in some cases, things have gotten worse. Schools are more segregated, income and wealth inequality has dramatically increased, opportunity gaps remain, and poverty and incarceration rates are unacceptably high. Society is more unequal.
Yet one thing has changed: we know what works — and what doesn’t. The question is, do we have the will to use that knowledge? Can we build the will to take what works and bring it to scale? Can we create the multiracial, multi-class economic justice coalition that Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy were advocating when they were assassinated in 1968?
In this essential Askwith Forum, an all-star panel of scholars, educators, media experts, and practitioners will explore the Eisenhower Foundation’s newly released update, Healing Our Divided Society. Panelists will discuss the economic investments, the education policy changes, the electoral and criminal justice reforms, and other commitments we need to significantly reduce poverty and racial injustice in order to fulfill the promise of equality in the United States.
PLEASE NOTE: Seating for this forum will be available on a first come, first seated basis.

Ben Wildavsky: The Great Brain Race | Talks at Google
The Great Brain Race tells the story of the transformation of the global academic landscape in recent years. Nearly 3 million students now study outside their home nations; globe-trotting faculty hop from the United States to Singapore to Saudi Arabia; Western universities create branch campuses in the Middle East and Asia; and new or rejuvenated research universities in China, South Korea, Europe, and beyond vie with American giants for the top spots in global education rankings.
Wildavsky's book makes the case that, despite worries about heightened university competition and an ever-fiercer race for talent, the globalization of higher education should be welcomed, not feared. That's because increasing knowledge is not a zero-sum game: the unhindered movement of people and ideas around the globe has enormous economic and intellectual benefits for individuals, for nations, and for the world.
