SLEEK Japanese STUDIO APARTMENT Tour + KYOTO STATION Area Guide | Kyoto, Japan
In late January of 2019, spent twelve incredible days exploring the food, culture, and wonders of Japan. After being a lover of Japanese food since I was a kid, it was amazing to visit the country and have authentic food and culture experiences first-hand.
Kyoto Airbnb:
Through those experiences, I fell in love with this majestic island nation and am so excited to share this amazing country with you guys!

After staying in Tokyo for a few days, the next city on my Japanese itinerary was the ancient and traditional city of Kyoto, where I spent two nights. But while I was there, I wanted to give you a quick tour of the apartment I called home. Come join me on a tour of my sleek apartment in the Kyoto Station area!
One of the great things about my apartment is that it’s so close to transportation, literally a ten-minute walk from Kyoto Station, the main train station in the city and one of the biggest in the country. It’s where I arrived at after my bullet train ride from Tokyo, so getting there after my ride was quick and easy.
The apartment building is nice and modern, with bike racks before you enter the lobby, which is guarded by a security system and surveillance cameras. Inside is the elevator, which I rode to the third floor to my unit, apartment 301. The building is very comfortable and safe, and I highly recommend checking it out on Airbnb!
The apartment is protected by two locks, including a double lock. It’s important to remember to take off your shoes at the door when entering a house or apartment in Japan. It’s considered disrespectful if you don’t!
Inside is a kitchenette with a sink and faucet, a gas stovetop, a rack with coffee mugs and glasses, a microwave, a tea maker, a small refrigerator and freezer combo, trash and recycling bins, and a nice closet where you can keep your shoes and other items.
The bathroom is very sleek and technologically advanced and contains a 2-in-1 washer/dryer combo, a shower, a toilet with bidet functionality and a heated seat, and a sink.
The studio apartment also contains a queen-sized bed, a twin bed, and a couch in the main area, as well as a table with a little monitor that displays the temperature outside. There’s also a closet containing extra blankets and pillows, and a really nice terrace! The apartment has everything you could possibly need and is clean and secure and great for a pair of people or even a small family.
The morning after my apartment tour, I headed out to explore the neighborhood. I was so thrilled to see that it was snowing outside! Being from Miami, I don’t get to see snow often, so I was really fortunate to get to see some on this trip.
My first stop was at one of the vending machines right outside my apartment, where I grabbed a cold Boss coffee (100 Yen/$0.90). There’s also a small, Buddhist shrine by the side of the street. Kyoto is filled with temples and shrines; there are over 2,000 of them in the city!
Nearby is a FamilyMart convenience store, one of the three major convenience store chains in Japan. At the end of the street is a gorgeous temple called the Higashi Honganji Temple. I took a seat outside it to enjoy my coffee before continuing on toward the downtown area, which includes Kyoto Tower, a 130-meter structure with an observation deck at the top, and Kyoto Station.

I hope you enjoyed coming along on this tour of my apartment and the area around Kyoto Station! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment below. And please subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already. I will see you in the next travel food adventure!

NHK Core Kyoto - Tsubo-niwa: Life Enhanced by Quintessential Spaces
Traditional Kyoto machiya townhouses have narrow entrances, and are long and deep. At the back lie small tsubo-niwa gardens, enclosed on all sides. Originally serving to light and ventilate the house, they enabled residents to comfortably endure the intense, summer heat. Over time, people applied their simple, austere aesthetic sensibilities to create beauty in these confined spaces. Discover the wisdom behind these gardens through the local lifestyle and the expertise of the landscape artists.

Japanese Scenic Train Ride Experience in Kyoto ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Japanese trains are famous around the world for their style, comfort and speed. In the countryside of Kyoto though, you may not have speed, but you do comfort and style. The Eizan Electric Railway starting at Demachiyanagi Station is a 94 year old line that is evolving fast. Since commuters are decreasing, Keihan Railways has changed the way it designs its trains to attract more tourists.
The plan is working and the Eizan Line is super cool.
The trains are all “One man” one person operated trains where the driver is also the conductor, taking tickets and payment before letting passengers off. They’re the ultimate multitaskers!
In September 2018, a strong typhoon damaged a lot of the Kansai region including Kyoto and the Eizan Line suffered heavy damage. The line was suspended for 90 days, the longest in its history. What’s impressive is that the entire company pitched in to help from the technical staff and construction to the office workers at headquarters. It’s a great example of teamwork in Japan and a reason why the Eizan line is so beloved.
There are many interesting stops on the Eizan line worth checking out.
We’ll stop at:
★ DEMACHIYANAGI STATION
The first station with change to the Keihan Line express for Osaka and Kiyomizudera, Gion, Central Kyoto
★ ICHIJOJI STATION
It’s known as Kyoto’s Ramen Town! There are 36 shops serving some of the city’s best!
★ KURAMA STATION
You can hike around Mount Kurama and Kurama Temple or head to Kurama Onsen for a dip in the closest hot spring to Kyoto city. It takes 40 minutes to reach Kurama from central Kyoto.
Get the Discount Osaka-Kyoto SIGHTSEEING pass
▶︎
Keihan Railways sells tourist passes for 1500 yen ($14.00) from Kyoto Tower. It’s also sold in Osaka at the airport and in town.
For foreign residents of Japan like me, there’s a 1-day train pass for the Eizan line for 1000 yen ($9.50) that lets you jump on and off. You can get this pass at Demachiyanagi Station.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Ryoan-ji〜
Ryoan-ji Temple's dry rock garden is a puzzle. Nobody knows who designed it or what the meaning is of the 15 rocks scattered across its expanse of raked white gravel. Some academics say they represent a tiger carrying a cub across a stream; others believe they depict an ocean accented with small islands or the sky dotted with clouds. There's even a theory that the rocks form a map of Chinese Zen monasteries. The only thing scholars do agree on is that Ryoan-ji is one of the finest examples of Zen landscaping in the country. You could stay there for years quietly contemplating the garden's riddles and still get no nearer to an answer, and maybe that's the point.

Japanese Guest House in Kyoto, Japan
We took the Shinkansen Bullet Train from Tokyo to Kyoto. We had 7 days to spend in Kyoto and decided to stay in a traditional Japanese Guest House. The cost for this is fairly expensive, depending on which Japanese guest house you choose to stay in.
We we’re staying in the centre of Kyoto and it was very easy to get around. We loved the accommodations of the Japanese house, it was fairly small, but comfortable. It had a private bathroom, small kitchen, laundry facilities and bedroom with a balcony. There was so much to do in Kyoto we didn’t spend a ton of time in the house; However the time we did spend in the Japanese Guest House was very nice and comfortable.
The one thing to note, which in my mind is something of significant is that the beds are small and if your taller it’s likely your feet will hang of the end. The other thing is the beds are very hard and the pillows are also very stiff and hard. This is what the Japanese like and no matter, where you stay in Japan it seams you will have the same experience. If you have trouble sleeping on hard beds and pillows, we recommend at the very least to pack your own pillow when you go to Japan.
If you would like to stay in the same Japanese Guest House we stayed in, you can stay at the Hibiki Guest House in the centre of Kyoto.

Originally from Vancouver, Canada we started an activewear business with nothing but a $5,000 credit card. Over 5 years we grew to over a million dollars in sales, and had our products sold in hundreds of stores, we were featured on Dragons Den, Bloomberg and much more! As the business grew it was becoming more stressful, and more expensive to keep up with the growth. In April 2019 we decided that we had enough and decided to sell everything and travel the world in search of adventure, happiness and new experiences. We started this YouTube channel to share our memories with family and friends, and even more so as a way to document our memories for ourselves! We are travelling FULL TIME as of June 2019, and we hope you will follow along our journey!

Japanese Zen Garden Design Kyoto - Rock Garden at Ryōan ji Temple
Japanese Zen garden or Rock Garden at Ryōan-ji Temple Kyoto sometimes called a Dry Landscape Garden Design or raked sand garden.
The raked garden at Ryōan-ji in Kyoto Japan is regarded as one of the best dry landscape gardens, or Japanese Zen gardens.
The temple at Ryoan-ji has two famous gardens, the main garden and the Dry Landscape or karesansui garden. Also known as a Zen garden, this a very popular garden with tourists and is best visited first thing in the morning on a week day to avoid the crowds.
The Zen garden is connected to a viewing platform that is next to the Hojo, which was the head priests residence.
The actual raking of the garden, as they are raked in patterns is also seen to be a form of meditation.
This is a walled garden set inside the temple grounds, 15 rocks representing different aspects of the landscape are carefully placed, and at no time can you see all 15 rocks at once.
Built around the 15th century, many interpretations have been put forward, one is that you can only see the 15th rock once you have obtained enlightenment, which sort of fits in with Buddhist teachings.
The white gravel often represent water, the rocks can represent islands, bridges and sometimes people.
The design can also be regarded as abstract, a place to meditate. Whatever the interpretation this is beautiful example of a traditional raked Japanese Garden.
The 4 Kanji characters inscribed on the water basin (Tsukubai) when you incorporate the square in the centre as a fifth character, can be translated to represent one of the central teachings of Buddhism.
口, which is the central character plus the outside characters 吾 唯 足 知 combined mean 'What one has is all one needs' or 'I know what I have is all that I need'.
The location for Ryōanji 龍安寺, is 13 Ryoanji Goryonoshita-cho, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto and it is easily accessed by bus.
For more information on the temple and gardens including opening hours and special events see ryoanji.jp
