Scotland’s housing minister praises Sanctuary project in Paisley
Kevin Stewart, Scotland’s Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning, this week visited Sanctuary’s new housing development in Wellmeadow Street, Paisley.
Mr Stewart was given a walking tour of the £6.2 million project by Peter Martin, Sanctuary’s Group director – development, before visiting two tenants in their homes. The pair were joined by Sanctuary Scotland director Pat Cahill and Cllr Iain Nicolson, the leader of Renfrewshire Council. A £3.4 million grant from the Scottish Government made the project possible.
Mr Stewart said: “I am delighted to see the real difference these new homes are already making to the people living in them, and to the wider community. A house is so much more than just somewhere to live – it provides a sense of belonging and pride, inspiring independence and wellbeing.
“High quality developments like this are a testament to the strong partnership working between housing associations, local authorities and the construction industry. Housing is central to our vision for a fairer Scotland, playing a vital role in eradicating poverty, promoting inclusive growth and creating vibrant, well-connected communities.”
Sanctuary Homes has transformed the site of Wellmeadow Street’s former Co-Op supermarket with 39 affordable properties, 24 flats and 15 houses for social rent. The project’s completion enables Sanctuary to press ahead with plans to regenerate Paisley’s west end. All 39 Wellmeadow Street homes are managed by Sanctuary Scotland.
Peter Martin said: “Our Wellmeadow Street project is an important milestone in the regeneration of Paisley’s west end. In partnership with the Scottish Government and Renfrewshire Council we will build more than 150 affordable homes for sale and rent to help transform this area.
“Sanctuary has an impressive track record of award-winning regeneration in Scotland. We will now work with the residents and businesses within the regeneration zone to progress our plans as quickly as possible.”

STORYLINE:
Prince Charles, heir to the British throne and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, visited Independence Hall in Philadelphia on Saturday to kick off their first trip to the city where Americans declared independence from British rule.
The royal couple greeted long lines of enthusiastic well-wishers outside Independence Hall, shaking hands with many of them.
Prince Charles and Camilla met with the city mayor, state governor and other officials in the first of several scheduled public appearances on their three-day visit to the United States..
Charles and Camilla were shown the famous Liberty Bell, which rang out on July 8, 1776 to summon the citizens of Philadelphia for the reading of the Declaration of Independence.
After Independence Hall, the couple attended a reception with community leaders at the National Constitution Centre.
During his address to the assembled guests, Prince Charles referred to the 1860 visit to Philadelphia by one of his ancestors - the future King Edward VII.
I am enormously proud to be following in my great-great-grandfather's footsteps - albeit 147 years later - and can only thank you most warmly for such a wonderful example of Philadelphian hospitality, he said.
Governor Ed Rendell congratulated Prince Charles on his fundraising, praising him for overseeing 17 foundations that raised 200 million pounds (392 (m) million US dollars) per year. The prince thanked him but said the praise was overly generous, saying the figure was actually for US dollars, not pounds sterling, and joked that he was not sure what the exchange rate was this morning.
Later in the day, the royals met students and educators at Philadelphia's International House, a non-profit school founded in 1910 with 400 students from across the globe and the United States.
While the Duchess had tea with students, the Prince attended a forum to discuss ideas on urban renewal.
The International House hosts annual leadership conferences on urban renewal, cultural exchanges and business initiatives as well as supporting the city of Philadelphia with various art and cultural projects.
On Saturday evening, the royal couple attended a concert to mark the 150th anniversary of the Academy of Music, the oldest grand opera house in the United States.
The Academy presented the Prince of Wales with a sterling silver Tiffany clock, engraved on the lid with the programme page from the gala concert held at the Academy in 1860.

Acme Joinery and Property Maintenance - Paisley Scotland
Acme Joinery and Property Maintenance are well established and respected construction company who are proud to have their roots in the historical Royal Burgh town of Paisley, in the Scottish Lowlands.
Paisley is world famous for its distinctive Paisley Pattern. The town was firmly placed on the map of world history during the period of Britain's industrial revolution when the town's ever expanding 18th and 19th century textile industry took the world by storm. During this period the town attracted many wealthy local and international entrepreneurs who created a hub of world trade at the very heart of the Royal Burgh. With their wealth they built many grand family estates including a great number of exquisite textile mills and trade warehouses and much of this wonderful architecture remains to this day, standing proud around the banks of the White Cart River.
However the town's beginnings stretch much much further back in time than the period of Britain's industrial revolution. Paisley has always been an extremely important strategic area in Scotland's history, having many of the great Scottish kings and queens, the Royal House of Stewart residing there at one time. The status of the town and its attachment the Royal House of Stewart begin with the granting of land in the area to Walter fitz Alan, the High Steward of Scotland by King David I of Scotland in the 12th century. The strategic location of this castle was to prevent the eastern expansion of the kingdom belonging to Somerled, the Lord of the Isles, and protect Western Scotland from Norse invaders. Eventually the hereditary title of High Steward came to form the surname Stewart.
Later in the 12th century, King Malcolm IV, grandson of David I, finally demanded the Somerled's fealty. In 1164, Somerled sailed to Renfrew and attacked an assembling Scottish army in a conflict known as the Battle of Renfrew. The outcome was a defeat of the Lordship of the Isles and the death of Somerled. The Lords of the Isles were eventually stripped of their lands and titles in 1493, after conspiring with Edward IV of England to overthrow the Scottish monarchy. Since that time, the Lord of the Isles - as with the Baron Renfrew - has been a courtesy title of the heir to the throne and both are currently held by Prince Charles, heir to Queen Elizabeth II.
The role of the Stewarts continued to grow and in 1315 Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward and Baron Renfrew married Marjory, daughter of King Robert the Bruce. Their son succeeded to the throne as Robert II of Scotland.
During the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll was injured and captured at Renfrew before being transported to Edinburgh and executed for his role in attempting to overthrow the Crown. The Argyle Stones in the town mark the site where his capture took place.
Acme Joinery and Property Maintenance recognise how fortunate we are to serve a community which is steeped in such a rich and interesting history - we are extremely proud to be a local Scottish company and we are honoured to be able to apply our professional expertise in restoring and maintaining some of this area's most beloved historical properties and estates.
