Athens, Greece: Ancient Acropolis and Agora
More info about travel to Athens: Crowned by the mighty Parthenon temple, the Acropolis rises above modern Athens; a lasting testament to Greece's glorious golden age. The Acropolis was the center of ritual and ceremony, and the religious heart of the city. The marketplace at its base is Agora, which was the hub of commercial, political, and social life.

Ancient Agora was the central quarter of the city. Philosophers gathered from all Greece in this place to discuss and argue about all matters from moral virtues to astronomy and every-day city problems. In this place, all Athenian officials held meetings deciding for the good of the people and the good of the city itself.

The Agora, Athens, Greece
Often overlooked by the hordes heading for the Acropolis is the ancient agora (market place). It's highlight being the 5th Century BC Temple of Hephaestos. There's also a small museum housed in a beautifully reconstructed stoa (colonnaded walkway) and a scattering of statues. It's an atmospheric site, with the bonus of dramatic views of the Acropolis looming above.
BBC.Building the Ancient City: Athens and Rome.1of2.Athens (720p)
Professor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill takes us on a journey across stunning locations in Greece and Italy to find out how Athens gave birth to the idea of a city run by free citizens 2,500 years ago. Every aspect of daily life from defence to waste disposal was controlled not by a king, but by the Athenians themselves. We discover how the Greeks created the first system of open government, and wrote the first constitution that laid down the rights of Athenian citizens nearly 2,000 years before the Magna Carta.

It’s 427 BCE, and the worst internal conflict ever to occur in the ancient Greek world is in its fourth year. Athens is facing a big decision: what to do with the people of Mytilene, a city on the island of Lesbos where a revolt against Athenian rule has just been put down. How did these kinds of decisions get made? Robert Garland outlines a day in the life of Athenian democracy.

ANCIENT ATHENIAN AGORA 2500 y.o.marketplace & Museum @ Athens by Adeyto & Huawei P20 PRO
Literally meaning “marketplace,” the Agora was the economic center, where the wealth, reach and influence of classical Athens was visible by the wide range of goods shipped in from the nearby port of Piraeus, which ranged from wheat produced on the shores of the Black Sea to precious dyes from the Levant.
But what marked the Agora with everlasting glory was the other commodity traded and peddled daily: ideas. The Agora was the meeting grounds and hang out spot for ancient Athenians, where members of the elected democracy assembled to discuss affairs of state, noblemen came to conduct business, ordinary citizens got together to meet up with friends and watch performers, and where the famed philosophers doused their listeners with wisdom (or rubbish).
The Agora also played serious a role in religious festivals. The architectural layout of the Agora was centered around the Panathenaic Way, a road the ran through the heart of Athens to the main gate of the city, the Dipylon.
The museum is housed in the Stoa of Attalos, and its exhibits are connected with the Athenian democracy. The collection of the museum includes clay, bronze and glass objects, sculptures, coins and inscriptions from the 7th to the 5th century BC, as well as pottery of the Byzantine period and the Turkish occupation. The exhibition within the museum contains work of art which describes the private and public life in ancient Athens. In 2012, new sculpture exhibition was added to the museum which includes portraits from Athenian Agora excavation. The new exhibition revolves around portraits of idealized gods, officially honored people of the city, wealthy Roman citizens of the 1st and 2nd century; AD, 3rd-century citizens and finally on work of art from private art schools of late antiquity.
Other sites to see in or around the Athenian Agora include the Church of the Holy Apostles (a Byzantine Church built around 1000 CE), the Roman Agora, the Areopagus (a hill where city affairs were managed prior to the democracy), the Pnyx (a hill where city affairs were managed once it became a democracy), the ancient cemetery at Keameikos, and of course the Acropolis.

The Ancient Agora of Athens - VIDEO TOUR (Athens, Greece)
The Ancient Agora of Athens! It's pretty much a large area of ruins called the Ancient Agora (market). It's where the ancients used to hang out, do some trades, preach and visit temples etc.... Like a modern day Monastiraki you might say! Many of the buildings are in ruin and the ones constructed have been re-built to 'specification'. You can enjoy of a lot of the area for free as there is a parthway around the entire area. If you want a close-up experience, you can pay to enter the area.
