Travel Greece - Exploring the Coastal City of Nafplion
Take a tour of Greek Town of Nafplion in Nafplion, Greece -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
One of Greece's most popular coastal cities is the enchanting Nafplion.
Originally surrounded by marshy wetlands, the city undertook an organized landfill project to more than double the area of its municipality.
On a steep hill overlooking the region with a wall that stretches for miles, is the 17th century Palamidi Castle, a city landmark. Among these is the small 15th century island fortress of Bourtzi which has served as a fort, residence, and hotel.
Past the white washed structures topped with red tile roofs are the sublime warm sandy beaches and port.
The town contains many historical buildings, sites, and vantage points as well as a fascinating archaeological museum.

Ghosttown Mystras by Drone
Mystras or Mistras (Μυστρᾶς/Μιστρᾶς), a fortified town served as the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries, experiencing a period of prosperity and cultural flowering. The site remained inhabited throughout the Ottoman period, when it was mistaken by Western travellers for ancient Sparta. In the 1830s, it was abandoned.

Επιστροφή ~ Homecoming(Orchestral).
Homecoming begins at Gerolimenas, a small picturesque coastal village at the southern tip of Mani. Mani is a peninsula at the very south of the Peloponnese in the prefecture of Laconia, Greece. We travel northwards via the old attractive sea port of Gytheio with its little island of Kranai, which boasts an impressive lighthouse. We also visit a nearby beach which features the rusty hull of a ship that ran aground many years ago.
Our next stop is Nafplio, one of the most attractive towns in the Argolis region of Eastern Peloponnese. Frankish, Venetian and Turkish conquerors all left their cultural and architectural marks on the place over the centuries. Nafplio was the first capital of the newly born Greek state in 1823 and remained so until 1834. There we visit Palamidi Castle standing imposingly 216 metres above sea level necessitating a climb of 999 steps carved into the rock -- and then Bourtzi, the small Venetian fortress standing on the rocky islet of Agioi Theordoroi.
Our next stop is at a place often referred to as the Gibraltar of Greece. Monemvasia is a virtual showcase of Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian history dating back to the 13th century. It is a huge inhabited rock with medieval ramparts and housing just offshore in Laconia in the south eastern Peloponnese. It is 400 metres from the mainland having been separated by an earthquake in 375 a.d. Its name derives from two Greek words, mone and emvassi, meaning single entrance. There we also see the house of the famous Greek poet Yiannis Ritsos, who was born in Monemvasia.
Passing through Sparta we head NW and upwards into the foothills of Taiyetos. It is here that we make our final visit at the Byzantine settlement of Mystras. Mystras, the wonder of the Morea was built in the form of a large amphitheatre around a fortress, erected in 1249 by the Prince of Achaia, William of Villehardouin. The settlement, having been reconquered by the Byzantines and occupied in turn by Turks and Venetians, was abandoned in 1832, leaving only the breathtaking medieval ruins standing in the most beautiful mountainous landscape.
We break our journey inland at Krokees, a small town south of Sparta in Laconia and the birth place of the poet Nikiforos Vrettakos. We are now approaching the Taiyetos mountain range that gave so much inspiration to Vrettakos. He spent the last period of his life in the small village of Ploumitsa, which has a clear view of these magnificent peaks.
