The Peloponnese or Peloponnesus is a peninsula and geographic region in southern Greece. It is connected to the central part of the country by the Isthmus of Corinth land bridge which separates the Gulf of Corinth from the Saronic Gulf. During the late Middle Ages and the Ottoman era, the peninsula was known as the Morea , a name still in colloquial use in its demotic form . The peninsula is divided among three administrative regions: most belongs to the Peloponnese region, with smaller parts belonging to the West Greece and Attica regions. In 2016, Lonely Planet voted the Peloponnese the top spot of their Best in Europe list.

1. Epidaurus Theater Epidavros
Epidaurus was a small city in ancient Greece, on the Argolid Peninsula at the Saronic Gulf. Two modern towns bear the name Epidavros : Palaia Epidavros and Nea Epidavros. Since 2010 they belong to the new municipality of Epidaurus, part of the regional unit of Argolis. The seat of the municipality is the town Lygourio.

2. Palamidi Castle Nafplio
Palamidi is a fortress to the east of the Acronauplia in the town of Nafplio in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece. Nestled on the crest of a 216-metre high hill, the fortress was built by the Venetians during their second occupation of the area . The fortress was a very large and ambitious project, but was finished within a relatively short period from 1711 until 1714. It is a typical baroque fortress based on the plans of the engineers Giaxich and Lasalle. In 1715 it was captured by the Turks and remained under their control until 1822, when it was captured by the Greeks. The eight bastions of the fortress were originally named after the Venetian provveditori. However, when it fell to the Ottoman Empire, the bastions were given Turkish names. The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, arguably making the peninsula an island.The canal was dug through the Isthmus at sea level and has no locks. It is 6.4 kilometres in length and only 21.4 metres wide at its base, making it impassable for most modern ships. Nowadays it has little economic importance and is mainly a tourist attraction. The canal was initially proposed in classical times and a failed effort was made to build it in the 1st century AD. Mystras or Mistras , also known as Myzithras in the Chronicle of the Morea, is a fortified town and a former municipality in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. Situated on Mt. Taygetos, near ancient Sparta, it served as the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries, experiencing a period of prosperity and cultural flowering. The site remained inhabited throughout the Ottoman period, when it was mistaken by Western travellers for ancient Sparta. In the 1830s, it was abandoned and the new town of Sparti was built, approximately eight kilometres to the east. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Sparti, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 131.948 km2.

Voidokilia Beach is a popular beach in Messinia in the Mediterranean area. In the shape of the Greek letter omega , its sand forms a semicircular strip of dunes. Monemvasia is a town and a municipality in Laconia, Greece. The town is located on a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. The island is linked to the mainland by a short causeway 200m in length. Its area consists mostly of a large plateau some 100 metres above sea level, up to 300 m wide and 1 km long, the site of a powerful medieval fortress. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period. The seat of the municipality is the town Molaoi.The town's name derives from two Greek words, mone and emvasia, meaning single entrance. Its Italian form, Malvasia, gave its name to Malmsey wine. Monemvasia's nickname is the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock.

Welcome to birthplace of democracy! Greece is one of the oldest and most influential civilizations in the world. I have visited three times and covered many destinations, From the mainland, to the islands. I've also sampled an array of foods, from seafood to hardy meats, wines and delicious cheeses. Here is my list of top 10 places to visit in Greece, a country unlike any other on earth.

1. Athens - Let's start with Athens, the capital of Greece and one of the oldest cities in the world.

2. Delphi - A two and a half hour drive from Athens brings you to what the ancient world considered both the spiritual and physical center of the universe.

3. Epidavros - A two-hour drive from Athens to eastern Peloponnese brings us to #3 on my list and one of the ancient world's most amazing civic structures: The Theatre of Epidavros.

4. Sounion - Number 4 on my list is the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion.

5. Rhodes Island - Rhodes is one of the largest of all the Greek islands.

6. Symi Island - An hour by ferryboat will bring you to the tiny but beautiful island of Symi.

7. Kos Island - Kos is home to the Asklepion, one of the world’s first healing centers, as well as the ancient tree under which Hippocrates taught his pupils.

8. Kalymnos Island - Traditionally known as the island of the sponge divers, Kalymians now enjoy living in one of Europe’s most illustrious rock climbing destinations.

9. Santorini Island - Its iconic blue and white houses and dramatic cliffs make it visually stunning at every turn.

10. Meteora - Meteora, which literally translates into ‘suspended in the air’ alluding to the medieval monasteries perched on top of rock pillars in this strange and beautiful landscape.
