Alexandria Catacombs - Underground Stone Vaults for Mummies
This video is based on our visit to Egypt during October, 2016. The Catacombs of Kom el-Shouqafa in Alexandria, entombed over 300 mummies, and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval Ages. The Catacombs were used as a burial ground from the 2nd to the 4th centuries A.D. The catacombs are a testimony to Alexandria’s fusion of Pharaonic-Greek-Roman styles. The catacombs consist of three tiers of tombs and chambers cut into bedrock to a depth of 35m (100 ft.). The bottom level is flooded and inaccessible.

The catacomb of Kom El-Shuqafa (was called a pile of shards) is one of Alexandria's most memorable monuments The Catacombs in Alexandria are so called because the design was very similar to the Christian Catacombs in Rome. It is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the middle Ages.
Ancient Alexandria tomb to open for tourists
(3 Mar 2019) The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities announced on Sunday that a project to reduce the level of groundwater at the world-famous Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa has been completed.
The archaeological site in Alexandria had suffered from rising water levels since its discovery in 1892, with the lower third level of it completely submerged.
From November 2017, a series of wells and pumps were installed, allowing water levels to recede inside the attraction.
Dr. Mostafa Waziri, General Secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that the project has transformed the site.
For the first time visitors, whether they are American, Dutch, Egyptian or British, can now visit and reach the third level of the tomb which had been completely underwater since a hundred years ago, Waziri said.
The attraction is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages and is an important burial site dating back to the Greco-Roman period in Egypt.

EGYPT 375 - KOM EL SHOQAFA CATACOMBS *ALEXANDRIA VI*(by Egyptahotep)
These Catacombs are in the district of Karmouz to the east of Alexandria. This area was named Kom El-Shoqafa
The cementery dates back to the 1st century A.D and was used until the 4th century A.D. It was discovered in 1900 when by pure chance, a donkey drawn cart fell into a pit, which led to the discovery.
The vestibule leads to a circular hall called rotunda. In the centre of this hall a shaft was cut leading to the 2nd storey of the tomb and surrounded by a small enclosure wall called the parapet, on top of which is a dome, supported by 6 pillars. Between the pillars there were some figures of human heads, some of which were discovered and transferred to the Greco-Roman Museum in Alexandria. To the left of the rotunda, is a vestibule, which leads to a chamber, which was also cut into the rock. Its ceiling is supported by 4 pillars, and it contains 3 benches, again cut in the rock, and takes a U shape. This chamber was called the Triclinium. Most probably, the room was dedicated for visitors, possibly where they would have dinner.
Before accessing the main chamber there are 2 corridors, one in the east and the other in the west, each one leading to a large number of Luculi. After you descend to the hall that passes the Rotunda there is a small hall in front. In this vestibule, we see to the east a statue of a man inside a niche; while to the west there is a statue of a woman inside a niche. Both statues were sculpted in the Egyptian way, with some features of Greek art. 2 composite columns, containing a mixture of Egyptian and Greco-Roman elements, support the façade of this hall. Among the Egyptian elements; is the winged sun disk, the Falcon God Horus and the Uraeaus or the cobra, while the Greco-Roman elements are represented in the pediment, at top of the chamber.Next to this bed, the God Anubis is holding in his left hand a jar; it is supposed to contain some liquids that were used during mummification, while his right hand is touching the mummy. God Anubis is wearing a Roman dress and on top of his head there is the sun disk with a cobra on each side.
Underneath the table there is a representation of the three canopic jars for the viscera; originally there were supposed to be four jars, which represented the 4 sons of Horus; Hapi, Imsety, Duamutef, and Qebesenuef. Most likely the artist did not find enough space to represent the 4th jar Duamutef, which take the shape of a jackal or Anubis,

Pompey's Pillar was originally part of a temple dedicated to Serapis located in the same area, a temple of the God Serapis, now badly damaged. It was built during the reigns of Ptolemy II and Ptolemy III, but was damaged due to the revolts of the Jewish population in Alexandria.
My journey to the ancient History in the Catacombs Kom El Shoqafa in Alexandria of Egypt
One of the seven wonders of the old world
Combining Greek and Egyptian and Roman cultural points as some statues are Egyptian in style, yet bear Roman clothes and hair style. The catacombs were a system of underground tombs during ancient times.
The catacombs of Kom El shoqafa lie on the western necropolis of Alexandria and consist of three levels cut through solid rock, the third level being now completely underwater. The catacombs have a six-pillared central shaft which opens off the vestibule.
On the left is a triclinium a funeral banquet hall where the family of the deceased stayed during the burial and in regular visits
A stone staircase descends to the second level, an area eerily alive with sculptures. In the lobby of the building two pillars are topped by the Papyrus, lotus, and acanthus leaves of ancient Egypt and two falcons flanking a winged sun decorate the frieze.
the first level can be reached through a breach in the rotunda wall that leads to the Hall of Caracalla in which the bones of horses and humans were found.

*** The catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa (meaning Mound of Shards) is a historical archaeological site located in Alexandria, Egypt and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.
The necropolis consists of a series of Alexandrian tombs, statues and archaeological objects of the Pharaonic funeral cult with Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman influences. Due to the time period, many of the features of the catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa merge Roman, Greek and Egyptian cultural points; some statues are Egyptian in style, yet bear Roman clothes and hair style whilst other features share a similar style. A circular staircase, which was often used to transport deceased bodies down the middle of it, leads down into the tombs that were tunneled into the bedrock during the age of the Antonine emperors (2nd century AD). The facility was then used as a burial chamber from the 2nd century to the 4th century, before being rediscovered in 1900 when a donkey accidentally fell into the access shaft. To date, three sarcophagi have been found, along with other human and animal remains which were added later. It is believed that the catacombs were only intended for a single family, but it is unclear why the site was expanded in order to house numerous other individuals.
One of the more gruesome features of the catacombs is the so-called Hall of Caracalla. According to tradition, this is a mass burial chamber for the humans and animals massacred by order of the emperor Caracalla in 215 AD.
*** Pompey's Pillar is a Roman triumphal column in Alexandria, Egypt, and the largest of its type constructed outside of the imperial capitals of Rome and Constantinople. The only known free-standing column in Roman Egypt which was not composed of drums,it is one of the largest ancient monoliths and one of the largest monolithic columns ever erected.
The monolithic column shaft measures 20.46 m in height with a diameter of 2.71 m at its base. The weight of the single piece of red Aswan granite is estimated at 285 t. The column is 26.85 m high including its base and capital.Other authors give slightly deviating dimensions.
Erroneously dated to the time of Pompey, the Corinthian column was actually built in 297 AD, commemorating the victory of Roman emperor Diocletian over an Alexandrinian revolt.
In early 1803, Commander John Shortland of HMS Pandour flew a kite over Pompey's Pillar. This enabled him to get ropes over it, and then a rope ladder. On February 2, he and John White, Pandour 's Master, climbed it. When they got to the top they displayed the Union Flag, drank a toast to King George III, and gave three cheers. Four days later they climbed the pillar again, erected a staff, fixed a weather vane, ate a beef steak, and again toasted the king
