Economic and cultural impact of horses in the state of Michigan
Alpena --- Horses have called Michigan home for centuries, providing a variety of resources to the people that live in the 'Wolverine State.'
The American Horse Council Foundation recently released a number of statistics of the economic impacts that the horse industry has on Michigan. The two year study broke down the impact into five different sectors. The racing sector supports 3,946 jobs and creates a total impact of $389 million. The competition sector supports 11,942 jobs and has an economic impact of $1 billion. Recreation, equine therapy, and equine rescues & sanctuaries make up over a half a million dollars in economic impacts on the industry. The total impact on Michigan's economy comes out to $2.6 billion.
Horses activists and enthusiasts believe that number should be higher. Retired Army Colonel Don Packard now serves as president of the Michigan Horse Council. He rode in the 2016 inaugural parade as part of the Michigan Mounted Police Unit. It was the first time that a person and not a member of the unit has ridden with the group. The retired Army Colonel looked at just the sheer dollars that go into the equipment to haul a horse as testament for a higher economic impact.
Every time you go to a trail ride group or organization, you see a $60,000 truck pulling an $100,000 trailer, said Packard. Then you see all of the gas that goes into that truck and trailer, all of the food and fuel and money that all of the individual trail riders and show people spend.
A few aspect have put financial dents into the amount of dollars from the equine industry into Michigan. Public Act 288 increased the amount of trails and roads for off-road vehicles. For horse owners, motorized vehicles can cause panic and flight in horses. These trails no longer become viable for horse trail riders to utilize. In addition, two major horse racing tracks have closed within the past few years, leaving only Northville Downs.
Horses have been around much longer, we have a right to ride in this state and we plan on pursuing that aggressively as often as we can, said Packard.
Packard is one of the few to ride from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron on horseback. His passion in horse culture and riding can be found through the 8 trips across the state. In Northern Michigan, horse riding and the great outdoors combine to make this region a perfect tool for equine education and culture. In Mackinac Island, Ashley Day, Program Manager at the Mackinac Community Equestrian Center, helps out with education of people on respect and proper use of horses.
It really helps with development in children and young adults, said Day. It puts them in a situation where they have to really utilize critical thinking skills and build confidence, they have to be accountable, they have to be self aware.
Education and exposure to horses will be the tools that local community horse organizations use to help the equine industry continue thriving. Jackie Konecke of the Alpena County Horsemen's Club wants more people to spend time with horses. By gaining more exposure, the horse activist expects to see more benefits than just a new found love.
There's lots of riding in our Northeastern Michigan that people don't realize that brings our community up, said Konecke. It will get people to come from the south and other states and to come up here to Northern Michigan and bring much needed dollars to our community which will help not only just the equestrians but mom and pop shops as well.
Pairing the beauty of the area with an outdoor activity creates another draw for people to visit and enjoy the opportunities available. Throughout the year, both Mackinac and Alpena's horse organizations offer a number of activities, competitions, shows, and community outreach that helps ensure horses as part of the cultural and communal fabric that makes up Michigan.

The Michigan Dogman is a cryptozoological creature allegedly first reported in 1887 in Wexford County, Michigan. The creature is described as a seven-foot tall, blue-eyed, or amber-eyed bipedal canine-like animal with the torso of a man and a fearsome howl that sounds like a human scream. According to legends, the Michigan Dogman appears in a ten-year cycle. Sightings have been reported in several locations throughout Michigan, primarily in the northwestern quadrant of the Lower Peninsula. In 1987, the legend of the Michigan Dogman gained popularity when disc jockey Steve Cook at WTCM-FM recorded a song about the creature and its reported sightings.
This creature was unknown to most of the modern world until very late in the twentieth century. It is said to have been stalking the area around the Manistee River since the days when the Odawa tribes lived there. Authentic sources for sightings made prior to 1987, however, have never been documented beyond Steve Cook's song, discussed below.
The first alleged encounter of the Michigan Dogman occurred in 1887 in Wexford County, when two lumberjacks saw a creature which they described as having a man's body and a dog's head. It has also been spotted many times in the Upper Peninsula by locals. Horses that had died of fright were found nearby, surrounded by dog tracks.
In 1937 in Paris, Michigan, Robert Fortney was attacked by five wild dogs and said that one of the five walked on two legs. Reports of similar creatures also came from Allegan County in the 1950s, and in Manistee and Cross Village in 1967.
Linda S. Godfrey, in her book The Beast of Bray Road, compares the Manistee sightings to a similar creature sighted in Wisconsin known as the Beast of Bray Road.
In 1987 (100 years after the first reported sighting of the creature), disc jockey Steve Cook at WTCM-FM in Traverse City, Michigan recorded a song titled The Legend, which he initially played as an April Fool's Day joke. He based the songs on myths and legends from around North America, and had never heard of an actual Michigan dogman at the time of the recording:
I made it up completely from my own imagination as an April Fools' prank for the radio and stumbled my way to a legend that goes back all the way to Native American times.
—?Steve Cook, Skeptoid.com, Wag the Dogman
Cook maintains his skepticism about the possibility of a real dogman, he had this to say about the matter:
I'm tremendously skeptical, because I've sort of seen the way folklore becomes built from the creation of this song to what it's turned into ... but I do believe people who think they saw something really did see something. I also think the Dogman provides them with an avenue to explain what they couldn't explain for themselves.
—?Steve Cook, Skeptoid.com, Wag the Dogman
Cook recorded the song with a keyboard backing and credited it to Bob Farley. After he played the song, Cook received calls from listeners who said that they had encountered a similar creature. In the next weeks after Cook first played the song, it was the most-requested song on the station. He also sold cassettes of the songs for four dollars, and donated proceeds from the single to an animal shelter. Over the years, Cook has received more than 100 reports of the creature's existence. In March 2010, the creature was featured in an episode of MonsterQuest.
Cook later added verses to the song in 1997 after hearing a report of an animal break-in by an unknown canine at a cabin in Luther, Michigan. He re-recorded it again in 2007, with a mandolin backing.
In late 2011, film Rich Brauer released a film called Dogman, starring Larry Joe Campbell. The movie premiered at the State Theater in Traverse City.
The film included a brief segment of The Gable Film, used with permission from Mike Agrusa, who received acknowledgement in the film credits.
Poem- Wendigo
The Wendigo is a cannibal spirit found in the mythology of many Native tribes of the Great Lakes region. The poem was inspired by a late-night drive across the Upper Peninsula, from the Porcupine Mountains to the Mackinac Bridge.
Wendigo
The highways stretch like strands of a thin net cast by men
over the peninsula to ensnare untamed things
that linger yet among the trees--
to sate the wind's hungry moan.
There are wolves here, I imagine, and moose,
but no men. No men for long miles.
Hardwoods lean in from both sides, clutching at the hi-beams
as an aggressive beat melds my body with the accelerator.
Snow falls in slow fat flakes, but at this speed
the hyperspace mesmer looms-- radiant specks gaining dimension,
points becoming lines. They promise collision, but careen away
into the darkness, out of the swath of the headlamps,
out of luminance, forgotten.
And every few hundred yards the pavement is stained:
mottled brown from old kills, or spattered a vibrant red--
blood from wolf, or moose, or man.
The bodies are nowhere now--
Track and trace obscured by gusting
and the Norths white teeth.
Deep in the forest,
a pine bough exhales piled snow like hot breath
in the frost. Powder crashes into powder
with a muffled thump, and there is stillness.
In the long houses of the Ojibwe it is whispered
that as it feeds
it grows.

exploring abandoned ghost town in desolate area
This ghost town in the upper peninsula is extremely desolate! I was not kidding when we thought we heard wolves, so unfortunately we had to cut the exploration short and head out. The animals we heard were very close and we did not have any protection. This location is absolutely beautiful and has its own uniqueness to it.

Transnational
Today’s video involves transnational shipping vessels, transnational car ferries, and a little transnational travel by the FirstUAV aircraft! This video was taken along the St. Clair River in the cities of Marine City and Alognac. It was a beautiful day: I was seeking large vessels to film with my UAV, and I wasn't disappointed. As far as I can tell, this is the first (published and documented) transnational US/Canada border crossing via UAV, but ships and boats cross that imaginary line all the time along the river so I’m sure my little aircraft briefly crossing the border doesn’t quite rise to the level of an international incident! Please correct me if there is another video that I missed: I always love to see other people’s work.
Thanks to DJ Cutman for the use of his track 'Ocean Soul' (which I love). I think the music fits this footage perfectly. Listen to it here:
Two ships are featured in this video, and for the geeks who might wonder how transnational they might be, one of them (the Edenborg) hails from the Netherlands:
While the other bulk carrier, the Algoma Guardian, hails from our Canadian neighbors:
