In downtown Halifax every year this gallery showcases NSCAD grads' work. Hundreds show up to support the budding artists at the Anna Leonowens Gallery.
CAFKA.14: Laura Moore
Laura Moore's One Man's Junk is three computer components chiseled from limestone at a 1:1 scale. Through One Man’s Junk, Laura Moore memorializes “electronic waste” and addresses the tension between the original and the multiple, the disposable and the permanent, and the interactive and the inert. Laura Moore has an MFA from York University, a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a Diploma of Art from Fanshawe College.
In the past, Moore has exhibited her work at; Station Gallery (Whitby ON), Ontario Science Centre , Oeno Sculpture Garden (Bloomfield ON), Thames Art Gallery (Chatham ON), Siena Art Institute (Siena Italy), Shoshana Wayne Gallery (Santa Monica CA USA), Leaside Sculpture Trail (Uxbridge ON), Peak Gallery (Toronto ON), Stride Gallery (Calgary AB), Cambridge Galleries, Glenhyrst Gallery of Brant (Brantford ON) and Anna Leonowens Gallery (Halifax NS).
In May 2013, Moore was invited to the Thames Art Gallery Artist in Residence program where she carved a limestone computer monitor for her new series one man’s junk. In September 2011, Moore carved stone at the Uxbridge Sculpture Symposium in Uxbridge ON. This work became part of the Leaside Sculpture Trail’s permanent collection. In May, 2011 Moore attended the Vermont Studio Centre Residency Program. In May 2010, she carved Mouse at the University of Windsor Residency Program. Mouse is on permanent exhibit at the Thames Art Gallery’s Sculpture Garden. In 2005, Laura attended the first Atlantic Stone Carving Symposium in Inverness, Cape Breton. She is also a transient member of Studio Pescarella in Pietrasanta, Italy where she carves stone periodically.

Patrick Jardine has a Masters of Architecture degree from Dalhousie University. He has over 12 years of experience in construction, design-build, and project management and over 7 years working in Architectural and community planning offices in Halifax, Saskatchewan, Vancouver and London, UK.
Patrick presently practices through Tekton Design-Build Inc. Tekton is small company based in Halifax and surrounding areas, with a keen interested in both heritage architecture and contemporary design in the region.
Whether we are working on a designated heritage building in the city, or a simple barn, we find they all have something interesting to share about our history here in the Maritimes. Using the word 'vernacular' as a verb would be useful to define our desire to learn about the traditional building methods which have evolved in our region. We are educating ourselves through the use of our hands, and thoughtful observation of ideas that have stood the test of time around us. It is through this education, and finding opportunities to re-inject the craftsperson back into the design process that we hope to hone a sustainable approach to the built environment around us. We strive to both preserve and build upon our local buildings, no matter what the scale of the project.

A short video narrative details the journey of a plush bear found at a crossroads in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The bear is washed and mended, and eventually returned to it's original location as a public artwork. This work consists of video, performance documentation, and the return of the bear to the public realm.

Episode 45: Letitia Fraser - Artist
Letitia Fraser is a figurative artist born and raised in Halifax Nova Scotia. Letitia is a proud descendant of North Preston. Coming from a long line of Artists. Her artistic interest was shown early in life. Her interest matured during her high school years driving her desire to continue to NSCAD, where she is a recent graduate.
Her artwork has been featured in exhibits at the Black Cultural Centre of Nova Scotia, the Freedom Festival Art Exhibit coordinated by the African Nova Scotian Music Association; and several exhibits by the Black Artist Network of Nova Scotia (2014-2017). In 2011 she illustrated images for “The Journey Continues; An Atlantic Canada Black experience.” Written by Craig M. Smith.
In 2018 Letitia had the opportunity to have her artwork published alongside other women in Understorey Magazines 12th issue dedicated to African Nova Scotian Women. She was recently given the Nova Scotia Arts Endowment Fund Scholarship and the 2018 RBC Emerging Artist Award from Nova Scotia Talent Trust.
In February of 2019, Letitia was featured on the cover of The Coast, and interviewed by CBC for her first solo, graduate exhibition Mommay's Patches, at the Anna Leonowens Gallery.

Follow D'Arcy Wilson, artist-in-residence for Re: Focus Sustainable Art, on her blog Protect Your Love.
D'Arcy Williams set out on September 7th to Nova Scotia backcountry, where she set up camp, encircled by an electric fence. In an area a fair distance away but visible with binoculars she installed a group of walkie talkies, and from the safety of inside her fence she will speak into her walkie talkie to communicate with any wildlife that passes by her installment!
She will continue to update her blog throughout the month and into October, so be sure to check back often to read more updates!

Robert Frank talks at TSOA, NYU about Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947–2016
A jovial Robert Frank speaks to an over capacity crowd of photographers, artists, faculty and students about his life's work. The event, held at Tisch School of the Arts, 721 Broadway, marked the U.S. launch of an exhibition marking of the publication of his new anthology: Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947–2016 at The Gulf and Western Gallery there.
In taking questions from the audience after the talk, Frank thanked people for coming out and generously, joyously and lovingly shared personal memories of his rise as an esteemed international arts photographer. When questioned how he would advise an aspiring photographer, the celebrated photographer told a student: Keep your eyes open!
Organized by Steidl Verlag, the new show will visit up to fifty universities, art schools, museums and other non-profit spaces worldwide, with the aim of doing justice to Frank’s life and work. Each venue receives its own set of exhibition prints. By agreement with Robert Frank, all paper banners are to be disposed of after each display to ensure that the exhibition is strictly not for profit. The show premiered at Anna Leonowens Gallery, NSCAD University, Halifax, Canada (2014), and has subsequently been presented at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Munich, Germany (2014); Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (2015); and Fotoistanbul, Istanbul (2015). Upcoming venues in 2016 include Leipzig, Germany; Appenzell, Switzerland; and Tokyo.

This video work was part of a group exhibition titled Speculative Architecture(s) featuring the collaborative efforts of Angela Henderson, Julie Hall, Jacob Irish, and Gabriel Soligo. Speculative Architecture(s) was exhibited from May 29th - June 4th 2016 at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
We shot video of friends' hands while they answered an oral questionnaire about spacial experiences. Julie edited the video clips to bring out specific gestural patterns stripped of audio, as if these hands were in conversation.

Collaborative Durational Performance with Jordan Bennett at the Anna Leonowens Art Gallery at NSCAD University.
This performance ran for several hours per day for the entire week and the last performance was scheduled to overlap programming with Nocturne:Art at Night Festival in Halifax, NS.
The piece was initially created by Johnson and Bennett at the Banff Centre for the Arts, where it was first performed in 2010.

The Canadians: Kit Coleman
Kathleen Coleman, journalist, war correspondent (born Catherine Ferguson on 20 February 1856 in Castleblakeney, Ireland; died 16 May 1915 in Hamilton, Ontario).
Kit of the Mail was the first woman journalist in Canada to be in charge of her own section of a Canadian newspaper. In the 1880s and 1890s she ran a seven-column page called Woman's Kingdom in the Toronto Mail.
Coleman was one of the first women in the world to become an accredited war correspondent when, in 1898, she went to Cuba to report on the Spanish-American War.
