Today we are checking out the Aratiatia Dam in Taupo. The Aratiatia Dam Opening Times are 10am, 12pm, 2pm (and 4pm in summer). However, when we arrive we see the Aratiatia Rapids released all day! You can see the Aratiatia Rapids in Lake Taupo area and it’s one of the free things to do in Taupo along the Waikato River in Taupo.

Aratiatia rapids. 6.32km below Huka Falls, Summer release hours - 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm
Winter release hours - 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm. The waters build up behind the dam, and so they do a release of the build up of water, which makes for a spectacular performance which people flock to see. Enjoy the performance.

I arrived about thirty minutes before the dam was scheduled to open to get a good viewing spot - and highly suggest doing the same, as it gets quite crowded.
Summer release hours - 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm
Winter release hours - 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm

This is downstream of the Aratiatia Power Station dam opening, and you can see the water increase over the course of just a couple of minutes, filling the lake area! Near Huka Falls and Taupo

Aratiatia Rapids are formed when the dam gates of the Waikato River are opened a few times a day. These are also the famous rapids used in the filming of Peter Jackson's movie, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

This video shows water rushing through the Aratiatia George after the water at the Aratiatia Dam is released. It's spectacular to watch the water rising for approx 2-3m just within minutes. The quality isn't 100% perfect though, I hope you like to watch this awesome scenery.

Today I visit the Aratiatia Dam. It's about 10 minutes North of the city of Taupo and it's definitely worth stopping by to see. The rush of water is amazing! The river looks deep, empty and rocky with just a trickle of water running through it. Then the gates open to let out a huge amount of water that rushes down the Waikato River. Soon you are faced with beautiful blue water rising and roaring down the river. This is also the film location for The Hobbit movie.
There are three viewing platforms. first one is on the bridge. The second one is just a 5-minute walk down a beautiful bush trail. And the third is just a couple of more minutes up the hill. I went to the second platform to get this shot. I think it's a great spot to see the water coming towards you. But on the bridge is great too. If you have time, you can see it from both locations as the gates are open every 2 hours.
