Greece, land of myths: Larissa Castle, Argos - Peloponnese | Κάστρο Λάρισα, Άργος
The Larisa castle, built during prehistoric time, which has undergone several repairs and expansions since antiquity and played a significant historical role during the Venetian domination of Greece and the Greek War of Independence. It is located on top of the homonymous Larisa Hill, which also constitutes the highest spot of the city (289 m.). In ancient times, a castle was also found in neighbouring Aspida Hill. When connected with walls, these two castles fortified the city from enemy invasions.
The history of the fortifications on Larissa Hill begins in prehistoric times and reaches the Greek revolution of 1821. Part of the long history of the city of Argos from prehistoric times, it was, from the first, a fortified observation post and the last line of defence for the city. The castle was first mentioned due to it being seized by Leontas Sgouros in 1203. Following his death, it was run by Theodoros Angelos, until 1212, and then it passed into the hands of the dukes of Athens, the de la Roche family, and in 1309 to the house of de Brienne. In 1388, Maria d'Enghien sold Argos and the castle to the Venetians, but before they could take possession, Nero Acciajuoli and the despot Theodoros I took the castle. They eventually surrender it to the Venetians in 1394. In 1397, following a short occupation by the Ottomans, Larissa was destroyed and abandoned. The Venetians returned to the castle but it eventually came under Ottoman rule from 1463 to 1686, when it was re-taken by the Venetians under Morosini. In around 1700, an explosion destroyed the castle's central cylindrical tower, which was used as a powder store, and the bastion that has survived to the present was built in its place. It was conquered by the Ottomans again in 1715. The monument's adventures would continue during the time of the Greek revolution, and battles were fought there. At the beginning of the 20th century, Wilhelm Vollgraff began his excavations, which mostly focused on uncovering the interior.
Traces of the Mycenaean fortifications (13th century BC) have survived in the castle's citadel, and some of the bulky, monolithic architectural elements were reused in later medieval defences.
Although the site was in continuous use from prehistoric times until WWII, it took the form we see today in the Middle Ages. The ancient walls, sections of which can still be seen incorporated into later masonry, were the main guide used when laying out the medieval fortifications. The fort is made up of the citadel at the top and a curtain wall. The walls are re-enforced by towers, which, as a rule, are triangular or quadrilateral. Later, from the 15th century, with the arrival of guns, the castle underwent extensive building work and was re-enforced with cylindrical towers.
The headquarters and military installations were most likely inside the citadel. A first millennium church has been found there. In 1174, a smaller church, dedicated to the Virgin, was built on the same site. The area inside the curtain slowly became residential, but this has yet to be explored. There were large cisterns in both the castle's enclosures. It kept this form until the end of the 14th century, with a few Byzantine and Frankish re-enforcements and alterations, and made Larissa one of the four most powerful castles in the Peloponnese, according to the Chronicle of Morea.

Visit The Theatre and Odeum at Argos, Greece.
The ruins of two distinct theater sites, situated just 100 meters from each other,
have been excavated in Argos. the first recorded date for excavation of a theater here was 18892, when I. Kophiniotis
partially unearthed the larger, Hellenistic theater. Although it is unclear when, the theaters fell into disuse, changes made
to the theater, the odeum, and other Argive sites point to sustained activity as late as the fourth and fifth cnturies A.D. These theaters could
have been buried for as many as 1,400 years

GREECE: EXPLORING ANCIENT THEATER built on rocky hillside 2400 years ago in ARGOS ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the ancient theater of Argos, which was built in 320 BC. The Hellenistic theater at Argos is cut into the hillside of the Larisa Hill, with 90 steps up a steep incline, forming a narrow rectilinear cavea. Among the largest theaters in Greece, it held about 20,000 spectators and is divided by two landings into three horizontal sections. Nearby from this site is Agora, Roman Odeon, and the Baths of Argos. The theater is one of the largest architectural developments in Greece and was renovated in ca 120 AD.

Castle of Morosini, Peloponnese, Greece
A Frankish castle built between 1377 and 1450 at the location of an older Byzantine fort, the Castle of Morosini commands the passage of the ancient route linking Corinthia with the Argolid
The name of the village, Aghionori, probably originated from monks of Mount Athos (Agio Oros) who settled there in the 11th century.
The Castle of Morosini had five towers, of which two have been rebuilt.

Moments from our 'Mythical Peloponnese: Fortresses and Legendary Sanctuaries' tour in May, 2019
Greece has been a strategic crossroads since time immemorial and the legacy of its rich history is visible in the castles and archaeological sites which adorn every corner of this magnificent country.
Specialist tour operator Eternal Greece Ltd designed and successfully ran an inspiring and illuminating ten-day¬ guided tour of the southern and eastern Peloponnese for 36 members of the UK-based Fortress Study Group and Castle Study Group (CSG). The participants were from the UK, the USA and Canada. The tour started on 18 May 2019 and looked mainly at Venetian fortifications but also included Byzantine, Ottoman and Frankish sites. The itinerary included a number of celebrated sites of Classical Hellenic antiquity, in the splendid Spring countryside of Greece.
The group was welcomed at an event hosted by the regional government of the Peloponnese and by the municipal authorities of Nafplio. During the same event, the FSG presented a plaque to the regional government honouring Palamidi fortress of Nafplio as the best-maintained and preserved fortification in the Peloponnese.
The sites visited during the tour comprised the castles/fortresses of Acrocorinth, Monemvassia, Mystras, Methoni, Koroni, Kyparissia, Androussa, Palamidi, Bourtzi (Nafplio) and Larissa of Argos, as well as the archaeological sites of Olympia, Mycenae, Tiryns, Messene, Nemea and the pyramid of Hellinikon. The overnight stays were at Marathopolis, Kalamata, Monemvassia and Nafplio.
As a result of its resounding success the tour will be offered again, launching on 28 March and ending on 6 April 2020.

Palamidi Fortress high above Nafplio, Greece
One of the best fortresses we have ever visited in Europe. Spectacular views of beautiful Nafplio, Greece below. More importantly, so much of the fortress has been preserved & there is so much to explore throughout. Venetian-built fortress built in the 18th century by the Venetians. We spent more time there than we imagined, because it was one wonderful discovery after another. Nafplio is also known as Nafplion - it was the early Greek capital before Athens became the designated one.
As is our custom, Ed does the video camcorder filming and any narrations heard throughout. I do the editing, etc. and upload to You Tube.
