Come With Us - Arcata Community Forest
Taking a stroll in the community forest in Arcata, Ca. We found ourselves on a nice hiking trail that lead to salmon berry bushes, which we learned we did not like, but they may not have had been ripe yet. We also ended up on the frisbee golf course which was a bit stressful, but in the end we found the little pond hidden behind Humboldt State University.
Overall a great day walking around the forest with my fiancé. Thanks for coming along, and be sure to subscribe to come on the next adventure with us in future videos.

Trail Riding in the Arcata Community Forest: Trails 13 & 13.5
Back in the Arcata Community Forest in Arcata, California! The Community Forest offers a variety of trails suitable for all ages and skill levels. Many trails are shared use and accomodate bicyclists, hikers, and equestrians!
Trails 13 and 13.5 (which has two sections) are fun, quick, XC type trails that are great to link together. I feel these trails would be suitable for novice to intermediate riders, and could still be fun for advanced riders capable of keeping their speed up. There are a few pedally sections, but overall the trails have a great flow and there are some cool features here and there. Be ready for that climb to the top if, like me, you are not in the best of shape!
Putting Arcata Community Forest on the Map
Last year, when nature lover João Paulo Curti left Brazil and came to HSU as an exchange student, he immediately took to the Arcata Community Forest. The Forestry major set off on his bike, and with a video camera strapped to his helmet, took shots of what he saw. He shared the footage online to show his family and friends back home what he was doing–and the stunning place he was doing it–in his spare time.
So began João’s interactive odyssey.
Armed with that camera and a lot of stamina, he headed into the forest to document trails wide and narrow, high and low. The end result is this detailed online interactive map, which lists information such as trail lengths, levels of difficulty, types of trees. It also includes video from his point of view.
He even included hiking circuits along with movie references–think “The Lord of the Rings.” (Click on “Hiking Circuits” at the top of the page).
Watch the video above to see the inspiration behind the map, and to get a taste of what it took to create it.

Arcata Community Forest: Sustainable Redwoods
The Arcata Community Forest is one of very few, community-owned forests in the west. Much of Arcata's Community Forest was logged during the 1880's. Following the logging of the Arcata's Community Forest, the area was used for grazing and for water supply. It was not until the 1930-1940's that the citizens of Arcata gained title to the Community Forest for the purpose of providing water to the town (Van Kirk 1985). By 1955, the Community Forest was dedicated as the first municipally owned forest in the State of California, and was to be managed for the benefit of all citizens of the city, with attention to watershed, recreation, timber management, and other values. Planet Humboldt: 4/20 Arcata 2012
The annual 2012 Four Twenty celebration in Redwood park was a bust this year. The Arcata police department deployed officers from various agencies but stoners stayed away from the grass this year.

A Cup of Community in Arcata, California
A few months ago, I walked into my favorite coffee shop and asked my barista if she had ever heard of the Cups song by Anna Kendrik. She burst into the most beautiful rendition of the song and I got misty eyed. It was so lovely. The idea to do a video project with my daughter became a slight obsession. This is the product of that obsession.
Thank you to Jitterbean in Arcata for putting up with us and our cameras, zooming in on their work, getting in their way and pestering them for schedules and shoot times.
Huge thank you to one of the most talented Baristas, DanD and his amazing voice and the ever sweet-voiced Alina. Cari, none of this would have happened without you.
