Archaeological Museum of Ancient Mycenae
version en français plus bas .
The Archaeological Museum of Mycenae Greece, Peloponnese: The Archaeological Museum of Mycenae is found at the entrance of the ancient site, just few steps before the Lion Gate. The idea for the construction of this museum right next to the ancient site belongs to late archaeologist Giorgos Mylonas, member of the Greek
Archaeological Society. The works for its construction began in 1985 and the museum was finally inaugurated in 2003.The exhibits come from Mycenae and the wider region and represent time periods from the Copper Period around 3,000 B.C. till the Hellenistic time in the 2nd century B.C. There are about 2,500 exhibits, mostly ceramic vases, jewelry, wall paintings, tools and weapons.
The jewelry pieces are very impressive, made of gold and with complicated designs. In one of the rooms you can also see a copy of the Golden Mask of Agamemnon, a grave mask that was found in the Treasury of Atreus. The original mask, a funeral mask made of pure gold, is kept in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. It is not exactly proved but archaeologist Schliemann, who first excavated Mycenae, believed it was the funeral mask of king Agamemnon.

Mycenae, Greece ~ Ancient Ruins
The 3,600 to 4,000 (?) year old ruins of Mycenae, Greece, are some of the most impressive of Ancient Greece. The earliest written form of the name is Mykēnē (Μυκήνη), is found in Homer. Mycenae is located about 90 kilometres southwest of Athens, in the north-eastern Peloponnese.
First excavations were begun by the Archaeological Society of Athens in 1841 CE and then famously continued by Heinrich Schliemann in 1876 CE who discovered the magnificent treasures of Grave Circle A. The archaeological excavations have shown that the city has a much older history than the Greek literary tradition described.

Mycenae MUSEUM
Mycenae Museum Temple paintings and finds
The citadel at Mycenae has yielded traces of possible temples, built c. 1250-1200 BC. The structures cannot be explored by visitors but the important frescoes depicting a number of figures, and the strange figurines, found there can be seen in the Museum. This video is a short tour of the finds. This is of particular interest to students taking Unit CC1 (Entry Code F381) Archaeology of the Classical World in OCRs AS-Level Classical Civilization course.

Mycenae Treasury of Atreus
This is a walk round the monumental tholos ('bee-hive') tomb at Mycenae known as the 'Treasury of Atreus'. It's one of several such tombs in and around Mycenae, and there are many more scattered around Greece. Very few have yielded much in the way of finds since the graves they once contained have usually been robbed out. This tomb is no exception and has stood open probably since not long after it was built in the 15th century BC. This is of particular interest to students taking Unit CC1 (Entry Code F381) Archaeology of the Classical World in OCRs AS-Level Classical Civilization course. Incidentally, if you're wondering how we managed to explore the place without anyone else there - it was sheer chance. Some visitors had just left and we had it on our own for 15 minutes before busloads of people arrived.

Archaelogical Museum of Mycenae | Myth | Mycenae
Venues of collective memory, museums are connected etymologically to the word Muses, the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne and patrons of the arts. The term museum was adopted internationally to signify the venues that safeguard the history, culture, and customs of the nations and the peoples. A visit to the Museum of Mycenae completes the journey of initiation that begun at the archaeological site. There, the legend of the abounding in gold Mycenae is revealed in all its glory. The exhibits come from the excavations of the citadel, its surroundings and the overall region.
Greece: Mycenae
Greek history from 1600 - 1100 BC is called Mycenaean due to Mycenae which was the main center of Aegean civilization through 1400 B.C.
In 1874, an amateur archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann, who believed in the historical truth of Homer, excavated Mycenae, and upon discovering a human skull beneath a death mask in a tomb, declared: I have gazed upon the face of Agamemnon, which is doubtful.
Agamemnon launched his ships to fight The Trojan War which is thought to have been fought in the 13th or 12th century B.C.
The entrance to the Acropolis is crowned by two facing lions. Their heads have not survived, but it is probable that they were depicted facing front.
Outside the city walls, lays the Grave Circle of the royalty of Mycenae.
Agamemnon may have been buried here in what is called The Treasury of Atreus, a large tholos, or tomb.
The beehive dome, constructed in 1250 B.C. was the tallest and widest dome in the world for over a thousand years until construction of the Pantheon in Rome was completed in 126 A.D.
The Museum ay Mycenae
Mycenaean Art is a bridge between The Cycladic and Geometric periods.
These charming female figurines recall the figures of earlier Minoan and Cycladic Art.
This fresco dates from 1250- 1180 B.C.
The art in this museum, like The Mycenaean Civilization, ends in the 12th century B.C.
Homer called Mycenae “rich in gold.”
This mask is a copy of the one in The NAM in Athens.
The long Trojan War, a nominal Greek victory, brought anarchy and ruin. Mycenae went into decline after Agamemnon’s return and never recovered after The Greek Dark Ages. Yet Mycenaean art would, 500 years later in Athens.
Mycenae, Greece
version en français plus bas,
Mycenae was a fortified late Bronze Age city located between two hills on the Argolid plain of the Peloponnese, Greece. The acropolis today dates from between the 14th and 13th century BCE when the Mycenaean civilization was at its peak of power, influence and artistic expression.
IN MYTHOLOGY
In Greek mythology the city was founded by Perseus, who gave the site its name either after his sword scabbard (mykes) fell to the ground and was regarded as a good omen or as he found a water spring near a mushroom (mykes). Perseus was the first king of the Perseid dynasty which ended with Eurytheus (instigator of Hercules' famous twelve labours). The succeeding dynasty was the Atreids, whose first king, Atreus, is traditionally believed to have reigned around 1250 BCE. Atreus’ son Agamemnon is believed to have been not only king of Mycenae but of all of the Archaean Greeks and leader of their expedition to Troy to recapture Helen. In Homer’s account of the Trojan War in the Iliad, Mycenae (or Mykene) is described as a ‘well-founded citadel’, as ‘wide-wayed’ and as ‘golden Mycenae’, the latter supported by the recovery of over 15 kilograms of gold objects recovered from the shaft graves in the acropolis.
