Azerbaijani Orthodox believers celebrate Christmas
At night on January 7, the Azerbaijani Orthodox Christians celebrated Christmas; liturgies were served in three churches in Baku, and churches in Ganja and Khachmaz. The festive service at the Cathedral of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women in Baku, the main country's Russian Orthodox Church, started around midnight and lasted for an hour and a half. The church was visited by about five hundred believers, the Caucasian Knot correspondent reports. Besides, the Christmas services were held in two other Orthodox churches in Baku – the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Church of Michael the Archangel, as well as in Churches of Alexander Nevsky in Ganja and Saint Nicholas in Khachmaz. Christmas according to the Julian calendar was also celebrated by the congregation of worship house of Saint Seraphim of Sarov in Sumgait. For details, see:

Cathedral of the Resurrection, St. Petersburg - lighting by iGuzzini
The new iGuzzini-sponsored illumination system designed by Architect Piero Castiglioni for the Church of the Resurrection in St Petersburg highlights the imposing Russian-Byzantine style architecture of the building, as well as underscoring the dramatic event that the cathedral itself commemorates: the assassination of 1st March 1881, in which Tzar Alexander II lost his life. For this reason, it is also known as the Church of St Saviour on Spilled Blood.
A building unique in St Petersburg, it is clad in coloured mosaic and surmounted by splendid onion domes, recalling the Cathedral of St Basil the Blessed in Moscow.

The motorway has been shut. Mobile fences dissect the landscape. Helicopters keep abreast of the situation above maize fields and freshly ploughed farmland. Rows of portable toilets line the edge of the forest; others are grouped in compact, rectangular units out on the fields. Police stand in front. Helicopter landing pads have been set up, roads laid across the countryside, broadcasting towers erected and containers stacked on top of each other. Stages are being constructed; police cadets march to and fro. Down on the red carpet, the minister president and her husband are being assisted with their rehearsal in front of a gangway which leads into nothingness, while the motorcade rehearses the VIPs' journey through the closed-off city. The state secretary is showing flower children what to do. Helicopters 1-6 are ready. What's happening?
The German word LAGE (English: position, situation) comes from Middle High German and describes a position of lying in wait. Something is going on. This may be a military, police or security situation: the situation of a military group in relation to their surroundings. A comprehensive view of the threat of government bodies or the reduction of domestic security. A situation which requires the police to act, factors and circumstances for rescue services which describe damaging events and damage prevention.
The film DIE LAGE tells of the very same, when in September 2011 Pope Benedict XVI travelled to Germany as part of his plan to promote New Evangelisation, paying visits to the city of Erfurt and a site in the Eichsfeld region, both in Thuringia. The situation there is as one might expect. A few weeks later at St. Peter's Basilica, the Pope announces his decision to declare a Year of Faith, to begin on 11 October 2012. This will be a good opportunity to usher the whole Church into a time of particular reflection and rediscovery of the faith.
Interview with Huseyn Haqverdi
Huseyn Haqverdi graduated from Azimzadeh State Art College in Baku in 1975 and from the Mukhin High Art and Industrial Academy in St Petersburg in 1980. Haqverdi has worked with different media, including sculpture, drawing and created monumental art. He produced the statue of St. Maria at the Catholic cathedral in Baku and a monumental mosaic panel of the Caspian legend in the Sangachal oil terminal. In 2003 he was named the Honoured Artist of Azerbaijan.
Haqverdi is equally proficient in sculpture, graphic work and painting. In addition, he is an avid photographer and video artist. However, he is known to the majority of people, both in Azerbaijan and abroad, primarily as a sculptor and it was as such that he has participated, in numerous exhibitions and symposiums both in Azerbaijan and abroad since 1980.
Haqverdi has many smaller sized sculptures. However, he is equally successful in monumental works. Thus, his mosaic The Legend of the Caspian Sea was perfectly integrated into the territory of the Sangachal oil and gas terminal. Haqverdi is also the artist who created the statue of the Virgin Mary adorning the Baku Catholic Church. The generalized, laconic form of this massive sculpture is a reflection of Haqverdi’s general artistic taste. He develops any
topic in depth, highlighting its most significant aspects and ignoring the trivialities.
Throughout the past decade, Haqverdi has participated increasingly often in group exhibitions and solo shows, showcasing his graphic works and paintings as well as his particular concept of visual art. The huge canvases on which space is intricately distorted, reflect the multi-dimensional mosaic of the world. The most striking examples are his photographic compositions and video art for a project on which he collaborated with several other Azerbaijani artists entitled ‘USSR-remix’. Utilizing the same principle – uniting, as in a mosaic, diverse fragments to create a single composition – he has approached his abstract monochromatic composition Our Time, which consists of five parts.

How Muslims & Christians Made Peace
Movie: The Message
It is the 7th century in Mecca, where powerful leaders are in conflict with Muhammad (pbuh) who invites them to change their way of life with its injustices. After seeing a vision of the Angel Gabriel, Muhammad (pbuh) calls the people of Makkah to set aside the 300 idols of the Kaba and worship only one God. Despite bitter opposition from the leaders of Makkah, Muhammad (pbuh) and his faithful followers meet secretly to listen to the revelations of the word of God. The leaders respond with persecution, forcing the Muslims to leave Makkah and take sanctuary in Madinah.
After a revelation from God , Muhammad begins to defend his mission. Then, the idols of Kaba are destroyed and the holy place is dedicated to the worship of one true God. Muhammad (pbuh) is the Prophet...the Messenger of God. This movie, The Message is an epic in the true sense of the word. It took six years to prepare and over one year to film.

Mikael Tariverdiev - Organ Concerto no. 1 Cassandra (II. Aria) (Luca Massaglia, organ)
Luca Massaglia ( plays Aria (no. 2 from Organ Concerto no. 1 «Cassandra», op. 91) by Soviet composer Mikael Tariverdiev (1931-1996).
Hauptwerk system, Cavaillé-Coll organ of St. Etienne Abbey Church in Caen, France.
Mikael Tariverdiev was born in Tbilisi, Georgian SSR to Armenian parents, but lived and worked in Russia. His father, Levon Tariverdiev, was from Baku (Azerbaijan) but a native of Nagorno Karabakh. His mother, Satenik, was Georgian Armenian.
He graduated at Moscow Gnessin Academy of Music (in the class of Aram Khachaturian) and he was taught orchestration by Dmitry Shostakovich.
He is an author of over 100 romances and 4 operas, but he is best known for his soundtrack music to many popular Soviet movies (more than 130 films).
Mikael Tariverdiev was a recipient of many awards, including the USSR State Prize (1977) and the Prize of the American Music Academy (1975). He was awarded the title People's Artist of Russia in 1986 and won the Nika Award (the main annual national film award in Russia) as best composer three times in the '90s.
The Best Music prize at the Kinotavr (the most important Russian national film festival) is named after Tariverdiev. After Tariverdiev's death, a group of admirers of his music founded the Mikael Tariverdiev Charity Fund and the Tariverdiev International Organ Competition.
In 1984, Tariverdiev visited the exhibition of paintings of Christopher Niesse in Berlin; he was particularly impressed by a series of paintings under the title Cassandra and decided to use the same title for his first Organ Concerto, written in Sukhumi (a city on the Black Sea where the composer used to spend his summer holidays ever since he was a boy) shortly before.
Cassandra is a character of Greek mythology. She consented to sleep with Apollo in exchange for the gift of prophecy, and then broke her promise. Her punishment was the curse of never being believed. She foresaw forthcoming misfortunes, but her warnings were always ignored.
The message of both Niesse’s Cassandra paintings and Tariverdiev's Organ Concerto no. 1 is a warning to today's inhabitants of the planet of the horrors of war threatening mankind.

On January 31, a message arrived at the SMS-service of the Caucasian Knot reporting about an attempt to close a mosque in Khasavyurt. Local residents confirmed that in the evening on January 31, law enforcers gathered in the vicinity of the mosque. Later on the same day, eyewitnesses told that power agents had closed the mosque Severnaya by welding up its entrance door. On February 1, the members of the congregation marched to the building of the city administration, where a group of believers held talks with the authorities.
