Ardvreck Castle and Loch Assynt in North West Scotland
A quick flight around Ardvreck Castle and Loch Assynt on a beautiful sunny day
Ardvreck Castle Loch Assynt Sutherland Highlands Of Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of Ardvreck Castle, a ruined castle dating from the 16th century which stands on a rocky promontory jutting out into the North side of Loch Assynt on ancestry visit to the Sutherland Scottish Highlands. The castle is thought to have been constructed around 1590 by the Clan MacLeod family who owned Assynt and the surrounding area from the 13th century onwards. Indeed Sutherland, the area in which Ardvreck is situated, has long been a stronghold of the Clan MacLeod. On 30 April 1650 James, Marquis of Montrose was captured by the Laird of Assynt and held at the castle before being transported to Edinburgh for trial and execution. Clan MacKenzie attacked and captured Ardvreck Castle in 1672, and then took control of the Assynt lands. The castle is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand. It was formerly the residence of Neil Macleod, Laird of Assynt. See Castle on The North Coast 500 Route

Scotland Quinag Assynt Pt1 Loch Bealach Cornaidh
Loch Bealach Cornaidh Quinag is at the foot of Spidean Coinich a Corbett and overlooked by Sail Gharbh at 2546ft, (Corbett are mountains between 2500-3000ft)
Quinag as it is more commonly known, is formed by a trio of Corbetts forming a Y shaped Mountain Range. Quinag is owned by the John Muir Trust whose aim is to protect these last true wilderness areas. Although Quinag lacks a Munro it is no less of a challenge and offers some of the finest mountain views in the UK. Although a relatively small mountain range it is still a vast wilderness that always impresses. At approx 2min 12 secs in the video you hardly notice the walker on the shore of the Loch.

Selected video, Gopro clips and photos of our 5th Day on our NC 500 adventure and the 16th day of our Scottish Road Trip.
Today we left Lochinver and first had a lovely walk in the Assynt area. Then we stopped at Ardvreck Castle before heading north to Kylesku Bridge - our lunch stop - then it was on to Scourie where we walked the beach before heading to Durness. Here we had to visit Cocoa Mountain, enjoyed a great walk on Balnakeil beach, before seeing Smoo Cave.

The Hermit's Castle . Achmelvich
In-situ poured concrete folly constructed in 1950 by David Scott, an English architect who left the area shortly after completion. Free form and expressionistic, the glass windows and door have been lost.
Beaton notes the interior consists of a bed platform, hearth and storage shelves within a irregular-shaped interior never wider or taller than 2m. Beaton further notes the form and material of the folly harmonise with both stoney Assynt and the Minch spreading below.

A walk to Castle Varrich from Tongue
The far northern Highlands are the setting for some spectacular scenery, with the estuary of the Kyle of Tongue being particularly noteworthy.
Perched on top of an exposed promontory sits Castle Varrich (or Caisteal Bharrigch in Gaelic) which overlooks the landscape from an elevated position and offers superb views from its sturdy viewing platform.
It's an easy walk from the village of Tongue on well-maintained paths that are only around 2 miles in length, so the return journey shouldn't take much more than an hour to complete.
