Presentation of Remote Control Parking (RCP)-Palais des Nations, Geneva
UNECE hosted a vehicle’s automated parking systems demonstration in the Ariana Park at Geneva’s Palais des Nations.
The Remote Control Parking (RCP) systems allow drivers to be outside the car during the parking maneuver and control the car’s motion via a smartphone or a smart key.
The automotive industry is ready to market this system and is requesting regulators i.e the World Forum for the harmonization vehicle regulations - WP.29, serviced by UNECE, to allow such systems.
The technical boundaries are being discussed this week by the experts of WP.29's Working Party on Active Safety (GRRF) to ensure that the benefits of these new technologies can be captured without compromising on safety.
Automated driving will be on the key issues debated at the Frankfurt Motor Show opening on 17 September.
It will even be discussed there today by the Ministers of Transport of the G7 with a demo of the same automated parking systems - see

Gandhi statues from around the world | Mohandas Karam chand Gandhi
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as Mahatma meaning ‘Great Soul’, not only fought for Indian independence from the British rule but also taught the world about ahimsa or non-violence.
Several nations look up to him with respect and have built monuments and statues to honour him-
1. Tavistock Square, London, England
Sculpted by Freda Brilliant and unveiled by former British PM Harold Wilson In 1968 to mark the impending centenary of Gandhi’s birth
2. Church Street, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
The city which once saw Gandhi being thrown off a train by a white man in 1893 honoured his activism through this bronze statue a century later.
3. Ariana Park, Geneva, Switzerland
Gifted by the Indian government to Switzerland, this statue marks the 60th anniversary of Treaty of Amity signed in 1948
4. Union Square, New York, USA
Sculpted by Kantilal B. Patel, the monument joined the quartet of works devoted to defenders of freedom at the Park
5. Gandhi Plane, Copenhagen, Denmark
This statue was given by Indira Gandhi to Danish government during her visit to the country in 1984

The Palace of Nations is the home of the United Nations Office at Geneva, located in Geneva, Switzerland. It was built between 1929 and 1938 to serve as the headquarters of the League of Nations. It has served as the home of the United Nations Office at Geneva since 1946 when the Secretary-General of the United Nations signed a Headquarters Agreement with the Swiss authorities, although Switzerland did not become a member of the United Nations until 2002.
In 2012 alone, the Palace of Nations hosted more than 10,000 intergovernmental meetings.
An architectural competition held in the 1920s to choose a design for the complex described the project as follows:
The Palace, whose construction is the object of the competition, is intended to house all the organs of the League of Nations in Geneva. It should be designed in such a way as to allow these organs to work, to preside and to hold discussions, independently and easily in the calm atmosphere which should prevail when dealing with problems of an international dimension.
A jury of architects was selected to choose a final design from among three-hundred and thirty-seven entries but was unable to decide on a winner. Ultimately, the five architects behind the leading entries were chosen to collaborate on a final design: Julien Flegenheimer of Switzerland, Camille Lefevre and Henri-Paul Nénot of France, Carlo Broggi of Italy and József Vágó of Hungary. Donations from League members were used in the interior. The Palace constituted at the time of completion (1936), volume wise, the second-largest building complex in Europe after Versailles (440,000 m3 (15,500,000 cu ft) vs. 460,000 m3 (16,200,000 cu ft) ). After its transfer to the United Nations, two extensions were added to the building, which considerably increased the size of the usable area of the building. Between 1950-1952, three floors were added to the K building, and the D building was constructed to house temporarily the World Health Organization. The E building (or New Building) was added between 1968-1973 as a conference facility (an additional eleven conference rooms and an extra volume of 380,000 m3 (13,400,000 cu ft)), with bringing the total of conference rooms to 34. With the additions, the complex is 600 metres (2,000 ft) long and holds 2,800 offices, with a total volume of 853,000 m3 (30,100,000 cu ft)
In December, 1988, in order to hear Yasser Arafat, the United Nations General Assembly moved its 29th session from the United Nations Headquarters in New York to the Palace of Nations.
The Palace is located in Ariana Park, which was bequeathed to the City of Geneva in 1890 by Gustave de Revilliod de la Rive, on several conditions: i.a. that the park always remain accessible to the public and that he be buried in the park. The park also contains a 1668 chalet.
Beneath the Palace of Nations's foundation stone is a time capsule containing a document listing the names of the League of Nations member states, a copy of the Covenant of the League, and specimen coins of all the countries represented at the league's Tenth Assembly. A medal showing the Palace of Nations with the Jura Mountains in the background was struck in silvered bronze.
The building overlooks Lake Geneva and has a clear view of the French Alps.....
UN Geneva Open Day 2012
More than 8,000 people visited the Palais des Nations and the Ariana Park on 15 September 2012, when the United Nations Office in Geneva opened its doors to the public.

Geneva Travel guide - Switzerland Charming Atmosphere
Geneva Travel guide - Switzerland Charming Atmosphere
Geneva is Switzerland's second-most populous city and is one of the world's major centers of international diplomacy, having served as the site of the initial headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Although the United Nations is now headquartered in New York, the organization still retains a large presence in Geneva at the Palais des Nations and many of its sister/child organizations, such as the World Health Organization and ILO.
Geneva was an independent republic from at least the 16th century until it became a Swiss Canton on 31 Dec 1813. This is a point of some pride to the Genevois, who still refer to their Canton as the République et Canton de Genève. A favorite festival is the yearly celebration of the Escalade, which commemorates a failed attempt in 1602 by the forces of the Dukes of Savoy to invade the city by climbing and otherwise breaching the city walls.
Geneva is still a very proud city. Some find it downright stuffy, although there is quite a bit more life to be found if you look under the surface, especially if you speak some French. Geneva is officially a French-speaking city, and the vast majority of the population speak French. All advertisements, information, and signs are in French.
Geneva, like most cities in Switzerland, is a marvel of public transportation efficiency. Transports Publics Genevois provides frequent bus, tram, 'mouette' (boat), and suburban train service to within a block or two of most locations in the city and canton. Public transport runs from around 4am until shortly after midnight. There are some night busses/trams available - but check your route in advance. By law anybody staying in a Geneva hotel/hostel is entitled to a free daily travel pass.
Districts of Geneva :
Old Town (vieille ville) and St. Gervais
Paquis
Plainpalais
Hopital
Eaux-Vives
The old-town is hilly and cobbled but can be easily visited on foot starting anywhere around the tour boat dock on Lake Geneva, or if you come from the Cornavin station, walk down to the Bel-Air island and continue straight on uphill to the old town. Crossing the bridge (Pont du Mont Blanc), you'll get to the English Garden with the famous flower clock and a sculpted bronze water fountain. Then you can cross the street (Quai de General Guisan) and go up the hill (on Place du Port and Rue de la Fontaine) and up the long stairway passage and end up behind Saint Peter's Cathedral. After visiting the cathedral, which is Geneva's best-known landmark, you exit the courtyard and be right in front of the Geneva City Hall. From there you can easily walk down to the Bastions Park where you will find the famous Reformation Wall memorial. This park is very quiet and romantic, especially at the beginning of the fall season, when the leaves start falling.
Geneva has a huge number of restaurants for a city its size, and the international community means there's more variety than you'll find in most Swiss cities. On the downside, Geneva is possibly the most expensive city in an expensive country. There are a lot of hotels in Geneva, but very few of them are actually in anything like the budget range. Hundreds, many right around the central Cornavin train station offer a pretty standard rate of CHF 135 per night for a single. If you arrive late and are willing to spend that it makes sense to look at the automated hotel board in the train station to find the nearest vacancy.
A lot to see in Geneva such as :
The Geneva Water Fountain
St Pierre Cathedral
Palais des Nations
L'horloge fleurie
Reformation Wall
Jardin Anglais
Bains des Pâquis
International Museum of the Red Cross and Red Crescent
Place du Bourg-de-Four
Tavel House
Parc des Bastions
