Fun Free Things To Do In Phoenix
Fun Free things to do in Phoenix
Hit the town without breaking the bank. Phoenix is the 6th largest city in the U.S. 16+ million people visit Phoenix each year.
1. The city's desert trails cross every corner of the metro area—and they are always free to bike, hike or ride. Especially South Mountain Park. A maze of well-maintained hiking trails crisscrosses one of the largest municipal parks in the world. For a spectacular view, drive to Dobbins Lookout Point and gaze at the city from 1200 feet. Then, trek to Happy Valley via a trail through South Mountain Park. The place is magnificent, especially in springtime when the terrain is knee-deep with wildflowers. Free maps are available at the entrance,
2. Roosevelt Row is downtown Phoenix’s walkable arts district, home to art galleries and studio spaces, restaurants, bars and boutique shops in a landscape dotted by colorful street art. We loved it, great place to get some wicked fun pictures and play I spy with kids. Plenty of inspiration surrounding you.
3. Arizona Capitol Museum: Museum exhibits, events, and programs focus on the evolution of Arizona from Territory to State. The Arizona Takes Shape exhibit provides school-age visitors curriculum-related information for Arizona State History and government studies. The museum has over 20 exhibits featuring contemporary, historical and artifacts from the Arizona state-owned collections. Permanent exhibits include the sinking of USS Arizona, the formal silver service from USS Arizona, a timeline of events pivotal in making Arizona a state, the Governor and Secretary of State's original offices, the historical senate, and house.
4. Civic Space Park: Worth seeing but really only at night. If you go during the day it is pretty, but nothing to write home about. If you go at night you will see the large piece of art lit up which makes it well worth the trip to see it.
5. Check out some of the parks and splash pads. We went to Civic Park which had a mini train ( not free) and wonderful playground. Some beautiful ponds. Cactus, and wildlife.

So much has changed in the Sonoran Desert in so little time, as recently as 100 years ago several of the dry washes were true rivers.Arizona boasts an impressive 30 or so native species of fish, unfortunately, most of the natives are disappearing with some of them virtually gone. Of Arizona’s native species, at least two-thirds are listed as Threatened or Endangered by state or United States federal agencies. A myriad of factors has resulted in their precarious position, including exotic competitors (and predators), irrigation diversion, dams, and overuse of available water by our burgeoning human population.
The Metro Population of Phoenix is 4,398,762
For more than 2,000 years, the Hohokam peoples occupied the land that would become Phoenix. The Hohokam created roughly 135 miles (217 km) of irrigation canals, making the desert land arable.
When the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, Mexico sold its northern zone to the United States and residents became U.S. citizens. The Phoenix area became part of the New Mexico Territory.
Phoenix is the sixth most populous city in the United States according to the 2010 United States Census, with a population of 1,445,632, making it the most populous state capital in the United States.
IN 1870 THE POPULATION WAS 240
The early economy of Phoenix was focused primarily on agriculture and natural resources, dependent mainly on the 5Cs which were copper, cattle, climate, cotton and citrus.
With more than 62,000 hotel rooms in over 500 hotels and 40 resorts, greater Phoenix sees over 16 million visitors each year, the majority of whom are leisure (as opposed to business) travelers.

Although I loved traveling Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California all summer...it was also good to return to familiar territory in Arizona. Chuckwalla - Video Learning - WizScience.com
Chuckwallas are large lizards found primarily in arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Some are found on coastal islands. There are five species of chuckwallas, all within the genus Sauromalus; they are part of the iguanid family, Iguanidae.
The generic name, Sauromalus, is a combination of two Ancient Greek words:σαῦρος meaning lizard. and ομαλυς meaning flat. The common name chuckwalla derives from the Shoshone word tcaxxwal or Cahuilla caxwal, transcribed by Spaniards as chacahuala.
Chuckwallas are a stocky wide-bodied lizard with a flattened midsection and prominent belly. Their tails are thick, tapering to a blunt tip. Loose folds of skin characterize the neck and sides of the body, which is covered in small, coarsely granular scales. The common chuckwalla measures 15 3/4 inches in length whereas insular species such as the giant chuckwalla of San Esteban Island can measure as much as 30 inches in total length.
They are sexually dimorphic with males having reddish-pink to orange, yellow or light gray bodies and black heads, shoulders and limbs; females and the immature have bodies with scattered spots or contrasting bands of light and dark in shades of gray or yellow. Males are generally larger than females and possess well-developed femoral pores located on the inner sides of their thighs; these pores produce secretions believed to play a role in marking territory.
The genus Sauromalus has a wide distribution in biomes of the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts. The common chuckwalla is the species with the greatest range, found from southern California east to southern Nevada and Utah, western Arizona and south to Baja California and northwestern Mexico. The peninsular chuckwalla is found on the eastern portion of the southern half of the Baja California Peninsula.

Camelback Mountain (O'odham: Cew S-wegiom) is a mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The English name is derived from its shape, which resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel.[3] The mountain, a prominent landmark of the Phoenix metropolitan area, is located in the Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon Recreation Area between the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix and the town of Paradise Valley. It is a popular recreation destination for hiking and rock climbing.
History
A cave discovered on the north side of Camelback Mountain indicates that it was used as a sacred site by the prehistoric Hohokam Culture before they abandoned the area in the 14th century.[4]
In January 1879, United States President Rutherford B. Hayes included Camelback Mountain as part of a one million acre (4,000 km²) reservation for the Salt River Pima and Maricopa American Indian tribes.[5] Six months later, at the behest of Charles Poston, the Arizona Territorial Legislature reversed the decision in order to ensure the primacy of the 5000 non-Indian area residents as well as their continued access to Salt River water.[6]
Efforts to protect Camelback Mountain as a natural preserve began in the early 1910s. However, by the 1960s, nearly all of the area had been sold to private interests. Federal and state authorities attempted to stop development above the one thousand and six hundred feet level. They failed to halt development and in 1963 efforts to arrange a land exchange failed in the Arizona State legislature. In 1965, United States Senator Barry Goldwater took up the cause and helped to secure the higher elevations against development. The area became a Phoenix city park in 1968.[7]
The peak lends its name to a major east-west street in the Phoenix area called Camelback Road that starts in Scottsdale and goes about 34 miles (55 km) west past the West Valley suburbs of Goodyear and Litchfield Park. It starts again past the White Tanks.
Camelback Mountain is designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.[8]
Geology
The mountain is composed of a geologic unconformity between two separate rock formations. The higher part of the peak is Precambrian granite (ca. 1.5 billion years old). The head of the camel is predominantly red sedimentary sandstone from the Chattian stage of the Oligocene epoch(ca. 25 million years old).[9]
Recreation
Two hiking trails ascend 1,280 feet (390 m) to the peak of Camelback Mountain. The Echo Canyon Trail is 1.14 miles (1900 m) and the Cholla Trail is 1.4 mi (2300 m). Both trails are considered strenuous with steep grades. The hiking path has dirt, gravel, boulders, and some handrail-assisted sections. The average hike requires a round trip time of 1.5 to 3 hours.[10]
The Praying Monk is a red sandstone rock formation which is used for rock climbing. Located on the northern slope, the formation resembles the silhouette of a man kneeling in prayer.[11] It rises approximately 100 feet (30 m) and the eastern face has several permanent anchor bolts for attaching a belay rope.[

Pitching a Private Prison for Globe
This video was paid for by Emerald Companies- the private prison company- who wants to build a 1000 bed prison within Globe City Limits. It was first shown in a closed door meeting to a select few long before there was any public debate.
When Woodall says citizens are thrilled about this project, the fact is very few citizens were even aware of the project. When they were made aware, a large vocal majority stood up in opposition. Hardly 'thrilled' at the prospect.
When the EDC president says, We're just adding to an industry which has already been approved, he is dead wrong.
In fact, there is not one private prison sited in Gila County. This would be the first and it certainly has not been approved by the voters.
The truth is that the few leaders who have led the way for this have refused to put it to a public vote. What does that tell you?
