Greek Maldives: Arki & Marathi islands: Aegean diamonds ~ Αρκοί & Μαράθι, τα διαμαντάκια του Αιγαίου
Arkoi (Greek: Αρκοί) is a small Greek island which is part of the Dodecanese archipelago. It is situated in the eastern Aegean Sea, close to the Turkish Aegean Coast. The island belongs to the municipality of Patmos, and has a population of 54 inhabitants at the 2001 census.
The small population means that there is no real capital, but most inhabitants live close to the main harbour with the rest living scattered around the island on higher ground. The majority of the population find employment in fishing, goat herding or running one of the island's four tavernas.
On the hill overlooking the main harbour are situated the ruins of an acropolis. Although little remains of the structure, the stones used to build it make a good viewpoint at which to see the sun set over the Aegean. At one end of the island, towards the island of Lipsi is the best beach on the island, Tiganakia. This beach is small and somewhat rocky but provides crystal clear waters to swim in and the view across the bay to the nearby islets is idyllic. This beach can become swamped in high summer (July and August) as day trippers from nearby Lipsi visit the beach frequently. At the other end of the island, in the direction of Samos, is what is referred to as the 'Italian jail'. Villagers say it was used during World War II as a prison by the Italian army, since from 1912 to 1943 the island was part of the Italian Dodecanese. Also at this end of the island is a cave, which contains a number of stalactite and stalagmite formations. The cave is however difficult to find as the land around it is covered by olive trees and bushes.
Marathi (or Marathos) is an islet of the Dodecanese and belongs to the Arctic cluster. It is located directly opposite the Arki settlement. The island, although extremely small, with an area of only 355 acres, is inhabited and has a small settlement. During the summer season there are two taverns and some rooms to let in Marathi. In winter, the only remaining residents are three brothers, owners of the island's shops. It is east of Patmos island and west of Arkoi island. It is part of the Dodecanese archipelago.
Lipsi, Arki, Agathonisi and Marathi: The little unexplored gems of the Dodecanese. Rocky islets shaped into incredible forms by the elements, fiords that end up in white sandy beaches and turquoise coves.

019: Stern to Mooring Fails, a Rescue at Sea and Parthenon Visit
In the last blog we left Woody to look after the boat in the Aegina and get on with maintenance work while we returned to England for a few weeks.
It's great the kids are curious and want to learn about maintenance work on the boat, but obviously it slows things down a bit. So with the family out of the way Woody was able to work his way through the jobs list (we had a massive list to get through before we continued on from Aegina!)
Before we left the UK he bought a load of cordless tools from Powertoolworld - a grinder, jigsaw, and drill so he's able to save so much money making and repairing things on the boat.
We got the generator sorted out when we arrived but there was still the engine to paint, bilge pipes and strum boxes to sort out and the pre-filter of the water maker to rebuild.
The grey water tank in the Amel is quite unique in that it's housed in the keel and all waste water drains into this bilge 'tank' so it's an important part of the boat to keep clean and maintain properly, so both automatic and manual bilge pipes were replaced.
The pre filter for the watermaker was quite corroded and although we'd ordered most parts from the UK we still had to source bits locally on Aegina (which was easier said than done with strikes and strange opening hours!).
Woody used to make industrial style furniture in the UK: so luckily he was used to working with pipes and fittings. We still haven't got around to fully servicing in the watermaker yet but that'll be on the next job list.
We'd noticed that the kids really enjoy watching the dolphins and other wildlife from the bow of the boat and occasionally enjoy the personal space there. But at the moment we've just got a pulpit framework to sit on, so Woody set too and designed and made a cool bow seat for the front of the boat too.
Mooring in the Mediterranean - particularly Greece - is mainly stern to parking, which means dropping an anchor three to five boat lengths out, reversing into the quayside and attaching stern lines to the dock. It sounds easy enough but crosswinds, prop walk and crossed anchors (and lack of experience) can turn it into an entertaining spectacle.
When Woody and I were flotilla skippers in Greece we used to raft up all the time, which is fine as long as you've got everybody's consent and someone to coordinate it. But when boats just turn up and decide they're going to raft up without anybody's consent and no coordination, then it leads to a whole new level of chaos, as Woody experienced when Ukrainian business flotilla turned up and literally gave him sleepless nights!
Two weeks went by quickly and Woody headed to Athens to meet us off the plane. Fortunately we have friends in Athens - Aurie and Mariela - who let us crash in their Athens apartment which meant we had time to visit the Parthenon!
The Acropolis Museum is build on top the ruins of ancient Athens and is a great place to visit. However, the Acropolis and especially the Parthenon was very busy, like a lot of honey pot tourist attractions in Greece.
We took pictures of #legoericka - a lego toy we were given by our author friend Ericka Waller to take around the world and visit all the places she can't because of her auto-immune disorder.
Our daughter gave us a Greek mythology lesson about the foundation of Athens and Athena while our youngest regretted it wasn't named after his favourite Greek god - Poseidon.
After visiting the Parthenon we headed back to Aegina but there's always drama in our life and on this occasion a woman was rescued by our ferry in the middle of the sea!
You can see the full footage from this incident on the link:
Back in Aegina the kids earned money for their ice-cream budget by busking which was a win-win, as it meant they put in lots of music practice too!
After reinstalling our VHF and AIS transceiver following an MMSI update we paid our fees and did a final shop. Our youngest was particularly keen to stock up on strawberries and cherries so we bought some from a local fruit and veg boat, cleaned the bugs off them and raised our new British ensign.
Finally it was ready to throw off the lines and leave the dock once again - heading for Poros and the Cyclades Islands.

Marski Marssi - Finnish Satirical Song about Mannerheim
Satirical song about Finnish military leader Mannerheim. Translation by Commieball:

Explanation of some references:
Karelian Isthmus - The most important front in Finland during WW2 with the legendary Mannerheim defence line
Vyborg - Russian city in Karelia Finns occupied in WW2
Greater Finland - Nationalist concept of annexing Karelia to Finland they used to justify joining axis to invade the USSR
Finnish lion - emblem of Finland
Kemppi, Terror of Morocco, Heinrichs, Airo, Siilasvuo - Finnish military leaders
Until Livonians and Latvians are free - Refrencing to when Mannerheim said in 1941 that he won’t put his word into his sheath until Karelia is ”freed”
-
Niin laski Marsalkan silmäluomi:
oli mustana taivas ja kusessa Suomi,
oli murtunut Kannas ja armeijan teräs,
sen sankarit metsissä käpyjä keräs.
Jo Päämajan saavutti tykkien jyly,
oli Wiborg mennyt — oo kohtalo tyly!
Ja ruoste raiskasi Kauhavan rautaa,
Suur-Suomelle kaivettiin kookasta hautaa.
Kerran jalosti yleni eloni kaari
Kunpa istuisi vieläkin Kremlissä tsaari!
Vaan ei — siellä lemussa vodkan ja kaalin
punoo juoniaan Molotov — niin ja se Stalin.
Mutt' niinhän se on, ach fan och förbannat;
senhän palkaksi saat kun sä parhaasi annat,
ura katkeaa mulla nyt kasakkain peitsiin,
Kaivopuisto adjö, minä matkustan Schweiziin.
Teille Heinrichs ja Airo myös hyvästit sanon
ja kaikkia kiitän ja anteeksi anon —
pian sammuvat lieskat ja hälvenee sauhu —
älä muistele pahalla, Marokon Kauhu.
Niin Marsalkan luomi vihdoin taas nousi,
veri sininen tyynesti suolissa sousi.
Hän huokasi, hetkisen ääneti vietti:
hän jäähyväissanoja miehilleen mietti.
Hän selkänsä suoristi, käskynsä jakoi,
ja kirjuri käskyn sen koneella takoi:
Te kuulkaa, sankarit Summan ja Kollaan,
päiväkäskyni viimeinen: Kusessa ollaan.

English translation:
So the Marshal’s eyelids went down,
The sky was black and Finland fucked
The Karelian Isthmus and the army’s steel has fallen,
Its heroes were collecting pinecones in a forest.
The sound of guns has already reached the headquarters,
Vyborg was gone - Oh, this cruel fate!
And rust was destroying the steel of Kauhava
A big grave has been dug for Greater Finland
Fear was in the chest and the sisu (or persistence) in the throat
And the Finnish lion - a meowing cat!
The fact comforted really poorly,
That there was a drop of Onega’s water in the bottle.
Oh, how did that damn Kemppi dare to do it,
That the brigade was going toward Kouvola!
He can be so stubborn,
That disrespected Russian soldier!
Bad luck, accident, that is what didn't happen,
and it was only crap that Adolf sent!
But defeat doesn’t worry me on second thought,
I’ve fought often, but always lost!
Once he swore an oath:
”My sword into my sheath I’ll put only until the last man
We’ve fought, fallen - some so pretty
Until Livonians and Latvians are free
His sword’s sheath was still laying in the corner
Nicklén was scrubbing it - whether it was holiday or not
Our brother Estonia has disappeared from the map Siilasvuo
stared at it lifelessly
Once my life(style) rised nobly
I wish the Tsar was still sitting in the Kremlin
But no, in the smell of vodka and cabbage
Molotov is plotting - oh, and that Stalin!
But that’s how it is, goddamnit,
That’s what you get when you do your best
My career will be ruined by the spears of the Cossacks Kaivopuisto, adieu!
I’m traveling to Switzerland!
To you, Heinrichs and Airo, I also say goodbye,
And I thank everyone and beg for forgiveness
Soon flames will go out and smoke will disappear
No hard feelings, Terror of Morocco
So Mannerheim’s eyelids finally rose again,
His blue blood was calm in his veins
He sighed, spent a moment in silence:
He was thinking of a valediction for his men
He straightened his back and shared his orders,
And the bookkeeper typed the order on the machine:
”Listen, you heroes of Summa and Kollaa,
My final order of the day: We’re fucked”
