During the Edo period (1603-1867), the Senju district of Adachi Ward, Tokyo, was known as Senjushuku, the bustling first post town for Nikko Kaido and Oshu Kaido, two of the five major highways that spread throughout the nation from Nihonbashi. It was one of the “four Edo post towns,” along with Shinagawa, Shinjuku and Itabashi.

Tokyo is Japan capital and the core of the most populated urban area in the world, Tokyo Metropolis (which has a population of over 37 million people). This huge, wealthy and fascinating metropolis brings high-tech visions of the future side by side with glimpses of old Japan, and has something for everyone.
Huge and varied in its geography, Tokyo Metropolis, spans not just the city, but rugged mountains to the west and subtropical islands to the south. Here are Districts of Tokyo:

Over 500 years old, the city of Tokyo grew from the modest fishing village of Edo (江戸). The city only truly began to grow when it became the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1603. While the emperor ruled in name from Kyoto, the true power was concentrated in the hands of the Tokugawa shogun in Edo. After the Meiji restoration in 1868, during which the Tokugawa family lost its influence, the emperor and the imperial family moved here from Kyoto, and the city was re-named to its current name, Tokyo. The metropolitan center of the country, Tokyo is the destination for business, education, modern culture, and government.
Tokyo is classified as lying in the humid subtropical climate zone and has four distinct seasons. Summers are usually hot and humid with a temperature range of about 20-30°C (68-86°F), though it can sometimes climb into the high thirties. Winters are usually mild, with temperatures generally ranging from 0-10°C (32-50°F), though occasional cold spells can send temperatures plummeting below zero at night. Snow is rare, but on those rare occasions (once every few years) when Tokyo is hit by a snowstorm, much of the train network grinds to a halt. The famous cherry blossoms bloom in March-April and parks, most famously Ueno, fill up with blue tarps and sozzled salarymen.
Tokyo has a vast array of sights, but the first items on the agenda of most visitors are the temples of Asakusa, the gardens of the Imperial Palace (in Chiyoda) and the Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, in Harajuku). Tokyo has many commercial centres for shopping, eating and simply wandering around for experiencing the modern Japanese urban phenomenon. Each of these areas have unique characteristics, such as dazzling Shinjuku, youthful Shibuya and upmarket Ginza. These areas are bustling throughout the day, but they really come into life in the evenings. A lot to see in Tokyo such as:

リニューアル 東京都庭園美術館の魅力とは
東京・港区にある東京都庭園美術館が7年半に及ぶ改築・改修を終えて、3月21日にリニューアルオープンします。歴史的な空間と新しさを兼ね備えた魅力を取材しました。
東京都庭園美術館は目黒駅から歩いて7分ほどのところにあります。本館は旧宮家の一つである朝香宮家の邸宅として1933年に建てられ、国の重要文化財に指定されています。1983年には、単純かつ直線的な装飾が魅力のアールデコ様式と、緑豊かな庭園が調和した美術館に生まれ変わりました。
美術館の改築と改修は2011年に始まりました。時代の歩みとともに老朽化が進んでいた本館は外壁を全て改装し、内装は所々壊れていた噴水やシャンデリアなどを修復し、当時の輝きを取り戻しました。本館の隣には新館が建てられ、現代美術の展覧会のほか、音楽や舞台芸術など幅広いジャンルのイベントを開催しています。
さらに今回、本館・新館に続いて、西洋庭園とレストランがリニューアル工事のラストを飾り“総合開館”となります。西洋庭園はかつての宮内省の官舎があった場所で、以前は草木が生い茂っていました。芝生が一面に広がっていた場所はバリアフリーに配慮して歩道が整備されました。整備された歩道は庭園の中を通り、レストランへと続いています。
ガラス張りの開放的な空間が広がるレストランは、内装が木のぬくもりに包まれた心地よい空間になっていて、東京・青山に本店を構える店が提供する本格的なフランス料理を堪能できます。
東京の新たな名所として期待が集まるこの美術館について、東京都庭園美術館の学芸員・板谷敏弘さんは「（総合開館で）今まで五分咲き、七分咲きだったのが、桜とともにようやく『満開』になる。庭もいろいろな表情があり、建物も重要文化財のアールデコ建築で、東京で一番美しく楽しい美術館だと思っている。自分の好きな場所を見つけて一日中くつろいでいただけたら」と話しています。

► Kiyosumi Garden is my absolute favorite japanese style garden in greater Tokyo area. It centers around a small lake, on which you can walk around from one small island to the next, via small bridges, stonepaths, etc. Kiyosumi is near perfect in terms of displaying all the elements used in traditional Japanese garden style; bonsai, water, rocks, wood, bridges and ofcourse, a teahouse - which I'll show you more of this year compared to last years edition.
Kiyosumi garden is a must-go if in Tokyo. If you only visit one garden while in Tokyo, this should be it!
Kiyosumi is located approx. 25 minutes from Shinjuku station by Oedo Subway Line, or 5 minutes from Nihonbashi by Hanzomon Subway Line. - Enjoy!

► Kiyosumi Garden is my absolute favorite japanese style garden in greater Tokyo area. It centers around a small lake, on which you can walk around from one small island to the next, via small bridges, stonepaths, etc. Kiyosumi is near perfect in terms of displaying all the elements used in traditional Japanese garden style; bonzai, water, rocks, wood, bridges and ofcourse, a teahouse - making this garden a must-go if in Tokyo.
So, I made this new - and longer version - of Kiyosumi (using more of my old material in combination with fresh, new footage) upon request of a few viewers, who'd like to see more of this, and i'd happily do so, as I think this great place deserves a more closer look than I gave it in my first attempt.

Oni no Shitaburi Gorge - Shimane - 鬼の舌震
Right in the center of Shimane Okuizumo prefectural nature park with it's amazing mountains and forests is the scenic Oni no Shitaburi Gorge.
The name Oni-no-shitaburi is derived from the Izumo Fudoki ancient story: “Wani-no-shitaburu”, where a shark (Wani) fell in love with the goddess of the land Ai. He started the night after night coming out of the sea of Japan to see his beloved goddess despite her disdain for Wani. To avoid been bothered by Wani every night, Ai banked-up the river making it harder for Wani to come and visit her. Still the more difficult and perilous journey it was for Wani the stronger his love for her grew. The name Oni-no-shitaburi is said to have evolved from a corruption in pronunciation from the original Wani-no-shitaburu.
Accessible via a 2km long trek along the Oni no Shitaburi Gorge you will find some ancient eroded boulders and rocks created over the centuries by a powerful and rapid stream giving more weight to the Wani-no-shitaburu ancient story.

Ritsurin Garden 栗林公園, is one of the most famous and most beautiful historical gardens in Japan. The garden is situated in the city of Takamatsu and is considered one of its main attractions. The garden contains a tea house, various folk art and craft exhibits, as well as various folk art and craft items for sale.
A tour through the garden generally takes one to two hours. There are various bridges, footpaths and small hills which offer a beautiful view of the garden and the surrounding scenery, most notably Mt. Shiun 紫雲山 at the western border of the garden.
In 1953, the garden was designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty 日本の特別名勝. The many ponds and streams are full of koi and the pond at the Tea House has benches where visitors may sit and feed the fish from breadsticks purchased at the Tea House.
