Diver finds hidden treasures on Grand Cayman Island
Recently while the cameraman and his dive buddy enjoyed a week of scuba diving on Grand Cayman Island, they got to discover some incredible undersea treasures, including the unbelievable colors and sights of many coral gardens and a vast array or fishes swimming through tunnels and overhangs. The "rivers of sand" dive sight, where this was shot in the east end of the island, was just that - rivers of sand flowing between coral covered bommies making for some incredible footage!

Gamersbay Cayman:
On my first day in the Cayman Islands I got to visit their most remote island named Cayman Brac. It has a very small population, doesn't get a lot of tourism, and is largely unsettled. We went to see the bat caves, coral rock bluff cliffs, and had a chance to host an educational workshop with local children.

Divers explore Kittiwake shipwreck on Grand Cayman Island
While Brent and Elsa were vacationing on Grand Cayman Island, being divers they chose to dive the ship wreck Kittiwake. Below is some information about this incredible ship which now makes a great dive sight and artificial reef.

On January 5th 2011, the Kittiwake (an ex USA Navy Vessel) was brought to the Cayman Islands and sunk to make an artificial reef off Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach. When in active duty, the Kittiwake was a submarine rescue vessel.

The Kittiwake was in service from 1945 to 1994, serving more than 50 years. After she was retired from duty in 1994 the Caymans Islands Government purchased her to make an artificial reef. In preparation for sinking the Kittiwake was cleaned of all chemicals and oils to insure that no pollutants could harm the nearby coral reefs, and had most of her internal fixtures removed to make the vessel as diver friendly as possible.

The Kittiwake is a large vessel measuring 251 feet long, hosting 5 decks, and weighing 2200 tons. She sits in ~60 feet of water. Open water divers can swim the first three decks, and advanced divers can swim through all five decks. Some highlights of the dive include two recompression champers, which served the divers who got decompression sickness on the Kittiwake, the bathroom which still has mirrors so you can see yourself, and the mess hall which still has tables and chairs.

Most of the Kittiwake’s missions are still classified to this day, however a quick search online gets plenty of hits to some of her adventures. Most notably in 1986 the Kittiwake recovered the Blackbox from the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster. The Blackbox was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean.

Today the Kittiwake lays in a marine park serving as an artificial reef. Divers and snorkelers are not allowed to take or touch anything in the marine park. To dive or snorkel the Kittiwake, you must go on a licenced vessel.

History of the Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands are a British overseas territory located in the Caribbean that have been under various governments since their discovery by Europeans. Christopher Columbus sighted the Cayman Islands on May 10, 1503 and named them Las Tortugas after the numerous sea turtles seen swimming in the surrounding waters. Columbus had found the two smaller sister islands (Cayman Brac and Little Cayman) and it was these two islands that he named Las Tortugas.
The 1523 Turin map of the islands was the first to refer to them as Los Lagartos, meaning alligators or large lizards, By 1530 they were known as the Caymanes after the Carib word caimán for the marine crocodile, either the American or the Cuban crocodile, Crocodylus acutus or C. rhombifer, which also lived there. Recent sub-fossil findings suggest that C. rhombifer, a freshwater species, were prevalent until the 20th century.
Archaeological studies of Grand Cayman have found no evidence that humans occupied the islands prior to the sixteenth century.
The first recorded English visitor was Sir Francis Drake in 1586, who reported that the caymanas were edible, but it was the turtles which attracted ships in search of fresh meat for their crews. Overfishing nearly extinguished the turtles from the local waters. Turtles were the main source for an economy on the islands. In 1787, Captain Hull of HMS Camilla estimated between 1,200 and 1,400 turtles were captured and sold at seaports in Jamaica per year. According to historian Edward Long the inhabitants on Grand Cayman had the principal occupation of turtle-fishery. Once Caymanian turtlers greatly reduced the turtle population around the islands they journeyed to the waters of other islands in order to maintain their livelihood.
Caymanian folklore explains that the island's first inhabitan...
Diving USS KITTIWAKE wreck - Grand Cayman Island
USS KITTIWAKE WRECK. Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, British West Indies.
251 long ship with 5 accessible decks to dive with great VIZ.
History:
Designed as a submarine supply ship, the USS Kittiwake was built in Savannah, Georgia, USA. It launched on July 10th, 1945 and was assigned to support and rescue duty with Submarine Squadron 6. In the 1950's she was stationed in the Atlantic and served silent service ships. In July of 1960 the USS Kittiwake stood ready to assist the George Washington, which launched the first successful Polaris ballistic missiles.
During the 1960's she continued to support submarines in Rota, Spain, and Greece. She then assisted with search and recovery of torpedoes while stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. In late 1965 the Kittiwake assisted in the recovery of a German submarine (S-171).
In 1984 the Kittiwake collided with the the attack submarine USS Bergall. The cause was a miss-wired main drive which caused it to operate in the opposite direction than expected. The bridge personnel saw the submarine approaching and ordered an increase in speed to avoid the collision. This resulted in the stern of the Kittiwake hitting the Bergall's sonar dome.
The USS Kittiwake was decommissioned on September 30, 1994 and then purchased by the Cayman Islands government in 2004. In July 2010 she was sunk off the west coast of Grand Cayman and became an artificial reef. Come and explore this amazing historical wreck dive today!

Scuba Diving the Kittiwake in Grand Cayman 2019
Bucket List Tick! Scuba Diving the Wreck of the USS Kittiwake, in Grand Cayman. I have so many friends in the Cayman Islands that it was kind of ridiculous that I hadn't dived the Kittiwake before. We put that straight almost as soon as I landed at GCM airport.
Why was Scuba Diving the Kittiwake on my bucket list? First, her history. She was the first US Navy ship intentionally sunk outside of US waters and throughout her naval service, had a storied career as an Auxiliary Submarine Rescue vessel.
Also, I wanted to show the Kittiwake as a great wreck dive for beginner scuba divers. She was so well prepared and has lots of easy swim-throughs. If you're thinking to start wreck diving, the Kittiwake is a great into to the scuba specialty.
Thirdly, check out the viz we got!
Grand Cayman, I love you! I can't wait to go back!
Thanks for watching! Please subscribe if you haven't already!
OK, bye,
James

100 foot descent into the abyss of the Cayman Trench
The Cayman Islands were formed millions of years ago due to volcanic activity and tectonic shifting. One of the deepest parts of the Atlantic Ocean, the Cayman Trough is an incredible 22,000 feet deep. The undersea walls around Little Cayman Island plunge 6,000 almost straight down. Divers can swim out over the edge and descend into an abyss that holds beautiful and mysterious sights. The usual fish are less plentiful this far from the surface but the wall still teems with life. Massive sponges of all colors thrive. These sponges attract the critically endangered Hawksbill turtle as it looks for food. Divers can only stay in this mysterious world a short time or they risk a dangerous increase in nitrogen levels in their blood. To give them more time at depth, they carry tanks of nitrox, a special gas with a higher oxygen concentration.

Few people ever experience the tranquility and wonder of the world this far below the surface. It is both peaceful and exhilarating at the same time.

GRAND CAYMAN SeaTrek AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN
We were on the beautiful Carnival Vista in Jan./Feb. 2019. Our second port of call was Georgetown, Grand Cayman. This port was by far our favorite! There is so much to do there and the water was the most beautiful water i've ever seen! We had to try this excursion when we heard about it.
You are taken by tender boat to the island where you are greeted by your group name. The guide takes us on a short walk to the small boat that takes us out to a larger boat where everything is setup for the excursion. We had the helmets put on us and we could immediately go down to a depth of 40 ft where you were met with a white sandy bottom, coral, and some of the most beautiful tropical fish! The water was a bit chilly that day, but none of us cared. We were there for an adventure of a lifetime.
There was a guide waiting for us at the bottom and he got the fish to eat from our hands and helped us explore the ocean bed. It was truly an amazing experience that I would recommend anyone partake in. As our guide put it, If you can walk and breathe, you can do this excursion.
