☆Bits of knowledge〜Gojoten Shrine〜
Ueno Park in Tokyo is famous for several reasons. It houses many of the country’s top museums. It has a zoo. Its cherry blossom parties are legendary. And it was the site of a decisive battle in the Boshin Civil War, featuring Saigo Takamori (‘the last samurai’) whose statue stands near the southern entrance.
Not many people know, however, that the park also boasts three shrines. The most famous is the Toshogu Shrine, one of some 200 around the country dedicated to the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616). The shogun was deified after his death as Tosho Daigongen (Great Avatar of the Shining East). The shrine was originally built in 1627 by a Tokugawa follower, but was rebuilt in grander style in 1651 by the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, who glorified his grandfather.

I have never been to Japan, but thanks to my dear friend Naoko, I was able to visit Tokyo for a few days before the start of my program in Seoul.
This is part one of a three-part video series for my vacation in Tokyo.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Kaminarimon〜
In order to explain the history of Kaminarimon, it’s first necessary to explain a little bit about the history of Sensoji Temple.
In the year 628 CE, two brothers fishing in the Sumida River caught a statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon in their net. When the village headman heard about it, he took vows as a Buddhist priest and remade his home into a temple in order to enshrine the statue. This is said to be the beginning of Sensoji Temple. The statue is enshrined in the temple to this very day.
The words “Komagata-do” are written on these two signs (in the two photos above). It’s near Sensoji Temple. This is said to mark the place where the statue was first discovered.
