The Atibaleshwar Temple at Mahabaleshwar
Once Ravana, the great devotee of Lord Siva got a Sivalinga from the Lord owing to his deep penance. While carrying the Sivalinga to Lanka (his abode), two drops of water had fallen at this place known as Brahmaranya. From these drops, two demons sprang up, named Atibala and Mahabala. They troubled the people a lot and as a result of which, Lord Vishnu killed one demon, i.e. Atibala. Since then, this temple came up to worship Lord Vishnu in the form of Atibaleshwar (as per the boon given to them).

MAHABALESWAR Temple||MAHARASTRA|| PUNE ||
Mahabaleshwar is located at 17.9237°N 73.6586°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 1,353 metres (4,439 ft).
Located about 123.7 km (76.9 mi) southwest of Pune and 231.2 km (143.7 mi) from Mumbai, Mahabaleshwar is a vast plateau measuring 150 km2 (58 sq mi), bound by valleys on all sides. It reaches a height of 1,439 m (4,721 ft) at its highest peak above sea level, known as Wilson/Sunrise Point.
Mahabaleshwar comprises three villages: sumit dave Malcolm Peth, Old Kshetra Mahabaleshwar and part of the Shindola village.
Mahabaleshwar is the source of the Krishna River and Koyna River unites at Karad and later on flows across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The legendary source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Old Mahabaleshwar. Legend has it that Krishna is Lord Vishnu himself as a result of a curse on the trimurtis by Savitri. Also, its tributaries Venna and Koyna are said to be Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma themselves. An interesting thing to notice is that 4 other rivers come out from the cow's mouth apart from Krishna and they all travel some distance before merging into Krishna. These rivers are the Koyna, Venna (Veni), Savitri, and Gayatri.

Mahabaleshwar Temple
The Mahabaleshwar Temple has Lord Shiva as its presiding deity. The temple is encircled with a 5 feet high stone wall. The Mahabaleshwar hills were named after Lord Mahabali which means great strength. The Mahabaleshwar Temple is divided into two - the inner room and the outer room. The inner room is known as the God chamber and the outer is the central hall. The important site of prayer is a ‘lingam’ which is of black stone. The lingam is regarded to be the materialization of the Divine. The temple is the land mark of Mahabaleshwar. It is visited by locals and tourists.
Mahabaleshwar Temple is built in 1215 AD as per historical records. This temple is built in Hemadpanti style.
The temple houses Shiva's bed, damru and trishul which date back to approximately 300 years. It is believed that every morning, the bedsheet is found crumpled indicating Shiva's presence at night within the temple.
Koteshwara Temple: Mahabaleshwar
Few drops of Siva Linga (of Ravana) had fallen on this mountain and transformed into two powerful demons- Atibala and Mahabala. They conquered all the Worlds and created havoc. The Gods prayed to Adimaya. Under the illusion of Maya, Mahabala was pleased to give boons and ready to be killed by the Trinity, Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh. But, he kept one condition, that they should reside on this mountain along with him forever. So, Vishnu abides as Atibaleshwar, Brahma as Koteshwara and Siva as Mahabaleshwar.
VID 20190926 WA0012
Built in the Hemadant architectural style of South India by the Chanda Rao More dynasty, this 16th century temple is dedicated to the most revered deity of Hindu religion - Lord Shiva. The temple is secured by a 5 ft wall, which is divided into two parts - the sanctum sanctorum and the central hall. The sanctum sanctorum has the 500 years old and 6 feet long self-originated (‘Swayambhu’ called in Sanskrit) linga, in the shape of Rudraksha, which is considered to be the tip of Shiva linga, called as Mahalingam. In Fact, the religious significance of this place is higher than the twelve Jyotirlingas. Whereas the central hall contains the 300 years old articles dedicated to Lord Shiva like the Trishul, Rudraksha, Damru and a bed, believing that he still pays visit to the temple and uses them. There is a square shaped raised platform made of gold, believed to be given as charity by the Maratha ruler, Shivaji. It is believed that the square is equal to the weight of his mother, Jijabai. There are two more temples; the Atibaleshwar temple and Panchganga temple, residing at the same site.
Journey from the Kali temple to the Belur Math (Part 2)
The Part 2 of the three-part Series, Journey from the Kali temple to the Belur Math in a motor boat over the Ganges shows the viewer the various bridges constructed over the Ganges, the bathing ghats where people frequent for their daily dips, various other temples and historical monuments. Some centuries old structures are also seen which have been mute witnesses to several tidal bores over the Ganges. (Kindly see the Dakshineshwar Tidal Bore video). When the boat is crossing over to the other bank, many people collect the holy water of the Ganges in containers to be preserved in their homes and use it for various purification rites. On the other bank, one can see the 'Water collection and filtration Plant', the water from which is supplied to the City of Joy. Thus, one can naturally imply from this the secret behind the joyful nature of the people of Kolkata.

The Shri Mahalakshmi (AmbaBai) Temple
One of the 108 Shakti Peethas
Mounted on a stone platform
Statue weighs about 40 kilograms black stone is 3 feet in height
The Shri Yantra is carved in stone
History:
Chalukya empire was first built in the 7th century.
In 109 A.D, Karnadeo cut off the jungle and brought the temple to light
The existence goes back to the 8th century, according to Dr. Bhandarkar & Mr. Khare
In the 8th century, the temple sank down due to earthquake.
In the 9th century, Gandavadix (King) extended the temple by building Mahakali Mandir
During 1178–1209, in the reign of Raja Jaysing & Sindhava, South gate & Atibaleshwar Temple were built
In 1218, Yadav king Tolum built Mahadwar, and offered jewels to Devi
Further, Shilaharas built Maha Sarasvati Mandir.
He being a Jain, got 64 idols carved. It is possible that new idol called Padmavati was installed at that time.
Further, in Chalukya times, Ganapati before the temple was installed
Later during the time of Maratha empire, the temple was repaired. Though many invasions over this part of India have caused some damages of the beautiful idols which are all around the temple.
During 1712–1792 (Sambhaje Reign) Narhar Bhat Shastree had a dream which he told to Sambhajee. In the Mughal reign, the worshippers had hidden the idol for protection. Believing Sangavakar's dream, Sambhajee started a search.
This idol was found in a house in Kapila Teertha Market in the city. According to Sambhaji's letter dated 8 November 1723, Sindhoji Hindurao Ghorpade of Panhala installed the idol again on 26 September 1712 (Monday, Ashwin Vijiya Dashami). The number of devotees grew, and in due course of time, the Devi became the Deity of Maharashtra. The idol began to denude due to Abhishekas. So Sankeshwar Shankaracharya got it repaired. After Vajralep & sacrifices, it was again installed at the hands of Kolhapur Shahajee Raje in 1954. There are 5 main temples and 7 Deepamalas now. Around are 35 temples of various sizes and 20 shops. There are 5 Hemad-style tops and a Garud Mandap.
Legends and Significance
It is said that both Shri Lakshmi and Shri Vishnu reside in the Karveer area eternally and shall not leave even at the time of Mahaprayakala. This region is therefore also referred to as an avimuktakshetra. Karveer region is eternally blessed and is believed to be held by Mother Jagdambe in her right hand, and so this region is protected from all destruction. Lord Vishnu himself adores this region more than Vaikiuntha or the Kshirsagar since it is the home of his consort Lakshmi. According to popular legends, Mahalakshmi left Vaikuntha and arrived at Kolhapur on hearing that Lord Venkatesh (Vishnu) her beloved husband failed to take action against sage Bhrigu for his horrific behaviour towards him. An angry Mahalakshmi is said to have observed strict penance in Kolhapur for several years until upon hearing the news of her husband being married to Tirumala Padmavati, another avatar of Mahalaskhmi. The greatness of this region has therefore attracted many sages and devotees, the blessings and affections showered by this region on its devotees are immeasurable. It is believed that Prabhu Shri Dattatreya still comes here every noon to seek alms.
The deity of the Goddess Mahalakshmi is made of gemstone and is considered to be at least 5000 to 6000 years old. It weighs about 40 kilos. The precious stones that adorn the deity indicate the antiquity of the deity. The platform of the Goddess Mahalakshmi is made of stone. The deity of the Goddess has four arms. In the lower right hand she holds the matulinga, (a fruit similar to and ordinary lemon but much larger in size). In the upper right hand she holds large mace, kaumodaks, its head touching the ground. In the upper left hand she holds the shield or khetaka, and while in the lower one she holds a bowl, panpatra.
