The Australian Reptile Park | Somersby NSW | Australia | We.Are.Wanderful
OCTOBER 31, 2016—It was just a side stop to our main destination for the day, which was Port Stephens. We were not too excited since we've been to too many zoos featuring reptiles of all shapes, sizes, and dispositions. But we were in for a big and pleasant surprise. Turned out that there is much more to the Australian Reptile Park than slitherin' and slumberin' cold bloods and teenage mutant ninjas. It was here that we got to personally meet kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, porcupine-like (but not porcupine!) cuties called echidnas, a pair of adolescent tortoises, an adorable wombat, and many more. Oh, and did I mention that we got to feed kangaroos on the palms of our hands?
This is a short slideshow video presentation of our visit at the Australian Reptile Park. Enjoy watching.

WE GOT FLOODED! | The Australian Reptile Park
This morning we made the tough decision to close the park for the day due to incredibly heavy (much needed!) rainfall resulting in floods we haven't seen for over 15 years!
We’ve even had keepers stationed at our Alligator Lagoon to monitor the water levels, which were rising beyond the fence line.
Here is some footage we captured out around the park. We're very thankful for our amazing, quick thinking staff for helping keep things under control and our animals dry.

The park was founded by Eric Worrell in 1948 at the Umina Beach Aquarium. It 1959 it was renamed Australian Reptile Park and moved to North Gosford.
A second move occurred in 1996, to Somersby, adjacent to Old Sydney Town.
Just past midnight on 17 July 2000, most of the main park building was destroyed when a faulty electrical wiring caused a fire. Park staff helped fire crews, but ultimately the building was lost along with most of the hundreds of reptiles and frogs that had been maintained in the building. With a lot of work from the staff, and support from the city and from other zoos around Australia, the zoo was able to re-open its doors on 9 September 2000, just over seven weeks after the fire.
As of 2010, the Park remains the sole supplier of snake and funnel-web spider venom to the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (CSL) for the nation's anti-venom program. Over its 60 year history the park has assisted in saving over 15,000 lives
Some amazing footage as the handlers at the Australian Reptile Park on the NSW Central Coast of Australia capture an alligator to raid their nest for gator eggs.
