Avatar Grove in Port Renfrew, BC
Over the May long weekend, 2010, after hearing many people talk about this new found grove of old and very large trees that are slated to be logged, we decided to check it out ourselves.
We started from Muir Creek located about 15 minutes west of Sooke and then proceeded towards Port Renfrew. The instructions we had were pretty clear how to get there, so we had no problems finding it.
We did have a hard time getting through the forest though since Mrs. DiscoverSooke is 8 months pregnant, so we just stayed to the lower part of the grove.
It doesn't matter what your stand is on the logging industry, it should just go without saying that trees this old and this size should remain standing.
After we spent an hour in the forest, we decided that we would head back to Sooke by taking the Pacific Marine Circle route through Duncan and Cowichan Bay.
Avatar Grove || The World's Gnarliest Tree || Vancouver Island, B C
Avatar Grove is located just outside of Port Renfrew, B.C. on Vancouver Island. This beautiful, mysterious and magical old-growth forest features western cedars and Douglas firs that soar into the sky and need four to five people, arms outstretched, to span their trunks! Somewhere within the grove is 'Canada's Gnarliest Tree', an old western cedar with a massive growth on its trunk!
Join Marti from 'Down the Wrabbit Hole Travel' as she and her family explore the woods on a rainy day, discovering the strange 'Gnarliest Tree' and other interesting woodland finds! To read more about Avatar Grove and how to get there yourself, visit her blog post about it at:

Avatar Grove, Port Renfrew, BC - CHEK News Feb. 2010
*note - This clip is from Feb. 2010. At the time the BC Government believed the Avatar Grove was being mistaken for another patch of old-growth forest further along the Gordon River named Grant's Grove. This has since been clarified and the Ministry of Forests is now aware of the correct location.

Avatar Grove Feature - Shaw Daily, Aug. 2010
The Avatar Grove and Canada's Gnarliest Tree was discovered by Ancient Forest Alliance activists in December, 2009. It is home to some of the largest and strangest shaped ancient redcedars on the Island! There are also rare large Douglas firs found here as well. It has the potential to be the Cathedral Grove of Port Renfrew due to its ease of accessiblity and giant trees. Most of the Avatar Grove is currently under threat of logging and road development, with flagging tape strung up and paint on the biggest trees! No cutting permits have been issued yet by the Ministry of Forests and Range but the BC Government has recently (July 2010) stated that it is not interested in protecting the site despite requests from the public and local tourism boards. Support continues to grow though and the fight is not over yet!

The Avatar Grove and Canada's Gnarliest Tree!
***NOTE: The Avatar Grove is now protected as of 2012 (this video clip was made in 2011) BUT most of our old-growth forests are endangered. Sign the petition: AncientForestPetition.com THANKS to the tens of thousands of people who wrote letters, signed petitions, and rallied to save the Avatar Grove! At the time of the making of this video in 2011, the Avatar Grove was still slated to fall - but a broad-based campaign led by the Ancient Forest Alliance (AncientForestAlliance.org) and joined by our allies in the Port Renfrew Chamber of Commerce, resulted in the area's protection in early 2012. Canada's 'Avatar' forest
It's the battle to save ancient woodlands from a profit-driven corporation.
That may sound like the plot to the hit movie 'Avatar.'
But it is also the real-life story of a forest in western Canada earmarked for commercial logging, and the campaign to stop that from happening.
Al Jazeera's Imtiaz Tyab reports.
Avatar Grove
I did a long video of me walking through a grove of gnarly giant trees for my sister who has trouble walking, so she can see what it is like. Hopefully other people will enjoy it too.
