Italian Winemakers: Andrea Cortonesi, Uccelliera
Interview with owner and winemaker Andrea Cortonesi of Uccelliera in Montalcino, Italy.
Azienda Uccelliera Tasting · Video. 030 #PieroSini
In this Episode I´m tasting two red wines from Uccelliera in order to have a kind of mental preparation for my upcoming trip to this amazing region in Italy. Both wines are made of 100% of Sangiovese grosso a.k.a. Brunello, by Andrea Cortonesi (Azienda Agricola Uccelliera) in the little village Castelnuovo dell`Abate just south-east of Montalcino. 2007 Rosso di Montalcino and 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva.
After Andrea Cortonesi had bought in 1986 in Castelnuovo dell'Abate a nearly ruined farmhouse called Uccelliera with land, he transformed the newly acquired property in a mainly dedicated to viticulture farm. Thanks to his professional know-how Andrea had already achieved success within a few years. His first Brunello di Montalcino was bottled in 1993.
The carefully cultivated vineyards of Andrea Cortonesi are 250 meters above sea level and all extend from Castelnuovo dell'Abate towards Sant'Angelo in Colle. The old alabaster quarries, from whose blocks the Abbey of Sant'Antimo was built, adjoin the vineyards. After smaller acquisitions and some new crops, the vineyard area of the Uccelliera has grown to 6 ha. Although not very high, the terrain offers very good conditions for vine cultivation. The medium-heavy sandy soils are rich in minerals. The alignment of the rows of vines, the careful manual work in the vineyard and the thinning of the grapes produce perfectly matured and flavored berries.
Andrea Cortonesi is one of my favorite Brunello producing winery! If anyone embodies the amazing growth of Brunello di Montalcino, that person is Andrea.

Azienda Uccelliera with Andrea Cortonesi #061
Andrea Cortonesi of Azienda Uccelliera is definitely a person you should meet once in your lifetime. His winery is based in Castelnuovo dell´Abate, near Montalcino in Tuscany. A pure manifesto of simplicity. His family lives a rural life, which is reflected in the structure of the winery. This doesn’t mean, that Andrea isn’t able to produce majestic wines. He is a vintner who can deal with every single vintage (at least I think so), because he knows his vineyards quite well by visiting them every day. Brunello di Montalcino belongs to my favourite wines and Uccelliera is one of the fucking best (September 16. 2012).

Uccelliera - 2010 - Brunello Di Montalcino
Uccelliera - 2010 - Brunello Di Montalcino tasted by the Best Sommelier in the World Andreas Larsson.
Sweet Dark Fruit, Cedar Wood, Full-bodied
Red wine with a quite dense ruby-red core, still with some evolution without any hints of blue or purple, the rim is rather ruby towards tawny. Intense nose here, high ripeness. There’s some oak, there’s vanilla, leather; classic style that has got a fairly long aging in wood for sure. Cedar wood and a mix of red and dark berries here, some cassis, dark cherry. Good grip on the palate here, powerful, full-bodied, good volume; and I think the extract is nicely integrated here, very powdery tannins almost like cocoa powder. The fruit has got a hint of sweetness, even if the wine is classically dry it gives this generous mouthful of sweet dark fruit. Well-balanced, doubtlessly a style and a structure that will keep evolving for a long time, but I take great pleasure in drinking this now. Powerful, with lots of fruit, well-balanced in terms of tannins and oak, and a very long lingering finish.

Uccelliera Offering
The newly released wines from one of the hottest estates in Montalcino. With all the buzz about the 2006 vintage of Brunello di Montalcino we have seen a lot of interest in this latest release from Montalcino. I am always interested in the wines of Ucccelliera because even in average vintages like 2005 and 2008 these wines are excellent. In great vintages like 2006 These wines are stunning- and they are still reasonably priced.

Uccelliera by Marc de Grazia Selections
At present Uccelliera is without any doubt one of the top estates of Montalcino, the Brunello and Rosso are complex, intense extemely supple and drinkable. A small quantity of an IGT/proprietary wine, Rapace (meaning bird of prey in line with the name of the estate), a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet is also produced.

Uccelliera Offering
More great stuff from Montalcino. These guys have been on a hot streak with the 2008 vintage weighing in on the lighter side, it is producers like Uccelliera that are producing GREAT wines every year.
The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the top wines of this unheralded vintage, did I say that again? Whenever we show a vertical selection of wines from Montalcino it is always the lesser vintages that people prefer when they are young. Like the 1998 and 2000 vintages, these two vintages would be considered to be the least age worthy of all the last ten releases but these are closer to hitting their peak years of drinking upon release. Both the 2004 and the 2006 will be considered to be better vintages by the critics but the critics don't have to drink your wine- you do. And if you want to drink these wines in the near future 2008 and 2005 are the best choice.
