Azkuna Zentroa, previously known as Alhóndiga Bilbao, is a multi-purpose venue located in the city of Bilbao, Spain. It was designed by French designer Philippe Starck in collaboration with Thibaut Mathieu and was opened to the public in stages between 18 May and 24 October 2010.
The venue, labeled as a Culture and Leisure Centre, consist of a cinema multiplex, a fitness centre, a library, showrooms, an auditorium, shops, and a restaurant. In March 2015 its name was officially changed to Azkuna Zentroa in tribute to the late mayor of Bilbao Iñaki Azkuna.
Originally a wine warehouse (alhóndiga in Spanish), it was designed by Basque architect Ricardo Bastida and inaugurated in 1909. However, in the 1970s, a new warehouse was planned and the Alhóndiga was abandoned.
Several projects were suggested, ranging from public housing, a museum of modern art, or even demolishing the entire building, but all were scrapped. Finally, in 1994 it was decided to renovate it and build a sports and culture centre. The Basque Government decided to declare the building Public Property of Cultural Interest in 1999.

Dit bijzonder gebouw in Bilbao is van de hand van de Franse architect Philip Starck. Het is niet de buitenkant die hij bedacht heeft - want het was eerst een wijnpakhuis uit 1909 van de Spaanse architect Ricardo Bastida, maar de invulling en transformatie tot centrum “Azkuna Zentroa”. Met behulp van Starck heeft de transformatie een nieuw centrum voor sport, culturele activiteiten, uitgaan, film en creatieve bezigheden opgeleverd. Een parel in het centrum van dit eind 19e eeuwse uitbreidingsgebied van de stad. Het statige en als een paleis aandoende gebouw heeft met zo’n 43.00 m2 als nieuwe invulling een mediatheek, een binnenzwembad, een fitnesscentrum, expostieruimtes, een bioscoop met 8 zalen, een parkeergarage, diverse horeca waaronder een prachtige skybar en restaurant Yandiola, een design hoek, een koksschool en cafetaria Hola en dit alles gegroepeerd rondom een multifunctionele ruimte die doet denken een stationshal. Het gebouw heeft, behalve op de kop waar je diagonaal die stationshal binnenkomt een nieuwe randinvulling met diverse ruimtes tegen de oude muren van het voormalige wijnpakhuis La Alhondiga gekregen. Op enige afstand van deze randinvulling is een drietal grotere blokken neergezet. Gedragen door 46 door de Baskische kunstenaar Lorenzo Baraldi ontworpen fraai vormgegeven kolommen. Ze vertegenwoordigen de historie van de mensheid. De buitenrand is weer met de grote blokken verbonden via bruggetjes die in vide’s tussen de rand en de grote blokken hangen, hetgeen het ruimtelijke beleving aanzienlijk versterkt. Een bijzondere belevenis die in de tegenstelling overdag - tussen de minimale belichting onder de grote blokken en de grote hoge entreeruimte badend in het zon- of daglicht - zijn grootste verassing kent. De bijzondere en uitbundige kolommen voegen hier nog een bijna sprookjesachtige sfeer aan toe. Een omgeving waarbij in eerste instantie de vraag opkomt; wat is dit nu voor een gebouw?

Bilbao, an industrial port city in northern Spain, is surrounded by green mountains. It’s the de facto capital of Basque Country, with a skyscraper-filled downtown. It’s famed for the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which sparked revitalization when it opened in 1997. The museum houses prominent modern and contemporary works, but it’s the curvy, titanium-clad building that receives the most attention.
Bilbao is situated in the north-central part of Spain, some 16 kilometres (10 mi) south of the Bay of Biscay, where the economic social development is located, where the estuary of Bilbao is formed. Its main urban core is surrounded by two small mountain ranges with an average elevation of 400 metres (1,300 ft). Nowadays, Bilbao is a vigorous service city that is experiencing an ongoing social, economic, and aesthetic revitalisation process, started by the iconic Bilbao Guggenheim Museum, and continued by infrastructure investments, such as the airport terminal, the rapid transit system, the tram line, the Alhóndiga, and the currently under development Abandoibarra and Zorrozaurre renewal projects. Bilbao is also home to football club Athletic Club de Bilbao, a significant symbol for Basque nationalism due to its promotion of Basque players and one of the most successful clubs in Spanish football history.
The historical port was located in what today is an area called the Arenal, a few steps from the Casco Viejo, until the late 20th century. In 1902, an exterior port was built at the mouth of the estuary, in the coastal municipality of Santurtzi. Further extensions led to a superport, that in the 1970s replaced the docks inside Bilbao, with the exception of those located in the neighbourhood of Zorrotza, still in activity. Bilbao has been the economic center of the Basque Country since the times of the Consulate
The first notion of Bilbao as a tourist destination came with the inauguration of the railway between Bilbao and the coastal neighbourhood of Las Arenas, in the municipality of Getxo in 1872. The connection made Bilbao a minor beach destination. The real tourist surge though would come much later with the inauguration of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 1997.
Bilbao Airport serves the city and it is the busiest terminal in the Basque Country and in the entire Northern coast, with 3,9 million passengers in 2010. The underground network (Metro Bilbao), opened on 11 November 1995, is used by more than 85 million passengers every year. Bilbao has several theatres and concert halls (Teatro Arriaga, Palacio Euskalduna), cinemas, and a regular opera season offered by ABAO (Bilbao Association of Opera Lovers) . The Bilbao Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1922.
