FMG Engineering together with project partners - Oaklands Wetland Stormwater Reuse Scheme
The Oaklands Wetland Stormwater Reuse Scheme is a $9M project to enable water security by harvesting stormwater to provide an alternative water supply for non-potable uses. This reduces reliance on traditional water resources such as the River Murray and Mount Lofty Ranges catchments. The project also reduces the impact of urban runoff on downstream waterways and coastal environments by capturing pollutants found in stormwater.
For more than 15 years, various scenarios for a wetland and water quality project have been suggested at the former Driver Development Centre site, bounded by Oaklands Estate Reserve to the south, Sturt River Drain to the west and Oaklands Road to the north. This project, funded in equal part through Federal, State and Local Government funding came to fruition as a stormwater harvesting and reuse project. Consultation, master planning and design took place from late 2011 and concluded in August 2012. Tenders were called with successful contracts let in November 2012. Construction commenced in earnest in January 2013 with works substantially completed in December 2013.
The project has created a managed aquifer recharge (MAR) capable of capturing, cleaning and storing up to 400 million litres (400ML) of stormwater each year, and has the capacity to distribute over 172ML of water for the irrigation of council parks.
The project is scalable with the distribution system design to be easily retrofitted to deliver twice this volume of water if future demand is secured. This will enable the City of Marion to reduce demand on potable or bore water for irrigation to their existing parks and reserves.
Surplus capacity may exist in the future, allowing council to consider third party customers. The wetland is a Water Farm turning storm water that would otherwise discharge to St Vincent Gulf into high quality water for irrigation use.
In addition, urban amenity will be improved from the constructed wetland, through the supply of recycled stormwater for irrigation to Council open spaces and sporting fields. This will result in greener reserves, encouraging community use of open spaces, and promoting healthier lifestyles through the greater Council area.
