I'M A RICE FARMER! ???? // Luang Prabang, Laos (w/ Backstreet Academy and the Living Land Farm Laos)
I partner with Backstreet Academy to experience an aspect of local life in Luang Prabang: RICE FARMING!
During this incredible excursion, I travel to the Living Land Farm in the Luang Prabang area, where sticky rice is produced. Our host, Lee, takes us through the entire process, from selecting the seed, to plowing the fields, to harvesting and refining. This tiny grain that we take for granted means so much to so many people in Laos and all over the world. It was wonderful to see where my food comes from!

LAOS, WITNESSING a GIRL'S SOCCER GAME ⚽ in a rural school in LUANG PRABANG
SUBSCRIBE: - Here's a rarely seen game of girls' football (soccer) in rural Laos from a middle school just outside the Royal city of Luang Prabang. Very rare and very exclusive views indeed... Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Louangphabang, or Luang Phabang, literally meaning: Royal Buddha Image is a city in north central Laos, consisting of 58 adjacent villages, of which 33 comprise the UNESCO Town Of Luang Prabang World Heritage Site.
Laos is a Southeast Asian country traversed by the Mekong River and known for mountainous terrain, French colonial architecture, hill tribe settlements and Buddhist monasteries. Vientiane, the capital, is the site of the That Luang monument, where a reliquary reportedly houses the Buddha’s breastbone, plus the Patuxai war memorial and Talat Sao (Morning Market), a complex jammed with food, clothes and craft stalls.

Quality investments from Lao PDR: organic contract farming in Patxong province (Short version)
Lao is one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
The country offers an attractive investment climate. Tax incentives, policies and law reforms have resulted in a rapid expansion in hydropower, mining, construction and agriculture investments.
While economic growth has lifted thousands of people out of poverty, some investments have also come with big environmental and social costs.
The government of Lao is now working to ensure investments comply with national laws and policies to protect the environment and communities; and to ensurecontract negotiationsresult in equal benefits for all parties concerned.
The Poverty-Environment initiative is supporting the government's7th National Social Economic Development Plan that aims to improve the quality of investments.
A quality investment contributes toreducing poverty, enhance development of human capital, have least impact on the environment, support a diversified economy and provide a fair distribution of benefits to the population.
Six years ago Mrs Inpeng Samuntee converted her timber company into an organic contract farming businesscultivating coffee and vegetables.
Surrounding communities are already benefiting from this win-win initiative.
This example demonstrates the impact thatquality investments can have on human development, environmental conservation and the economy on the whole.
Globally, organic sales have reached $59.1 billion in 2010with experts forecasting a steady annual growthof 9 per cent or higher.
Laos has excellent potential to expand organic production, considering farmers are traditionally accustom to zero chemical production systems, , 75% of the labour force are engaged in agriculture related activities, not to mention the large contribution agriculture makes to GDP.
Domestic and foreign investments should be the driving forcebehindfarmers'adoption ofadvanced technologies, knowledge building ofGood Agricultural Practicesand provide the appropriate linkages to rapidly growing GREEN based markets.

Rice farmers seeking more export markets
Phanphet Agriculture Development Farm (PADF) is preparing to sell 10,000 tonnes of rice this year after negotiating exports with international partners.
PADF President Mr Thongsavan Miboun told the media on Wednesday the farm was doing its part to increase rice production and overseas sales.
The farm is considering deals with partners in China's Hong Kong and Taiwan and also encouraging other farmers to increase their rice production and boost their earnings.
The farm has 1,000 hectares of rice under cultivation as well as more than 700 farmers growing rice, which has driven year on year production growth since 2008.
Last year, the farm produced at least 8,000 tonnes of rice and expects production to reach its goal of 10,000 tonnes by the end of this year in response to partners' orders.
Mr Thongsavan believes the quality of Lao rice is now acceptable in overseas markets and expects continued growth with the farm expanding markets overseas and using modern technology to further boost production.
“PADF is also helping other farmers to see the importance of modern farming techniques such as better planting methods to improve rice quality and yields,” Mr Thongsavan said.
According to the Savannkhet province Agriculture and Forestry Department, they were looking to increase rice exports to China to more than 10,000 tonnes a year after the first order for 8,000 tonnes was received from China last year.
Xuanye (Lao) Company Limited was approved by China's National Development and Reform Commission to be the sole importer of Lao rice into China with a quota of 8,000 tonnes.
In October, the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China granted approval for the import of Lao rice by the Xuanye (Lao) Company Limited.
This year, the first shipment of rice imports from Laos passed through inspection and quarantine procedures at south China's Shenzhen port, according to local authorities.
The shipment weighed 87.8 tonnes and was valued at US$746 million, the Shenzhen Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau said. China mainly imports rice from Vietnam, Thailand and Pakistan, and recently added Laos to the list.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry estimated that Lao rice exports were between 300,000-400,000 tonnes last year.

RICE FIELDS IN LAOS | Real Rice Fields In Rural Laos, Thalat, Laos
These are the real-life rice fields in Laos, rural Laos, in Thalat, Laos.
I was fortunate enough to visit the real-life rice fields in Laos, and see how the locals make their living in rural Laos, in todays day and age.
I believe my parents also worked in the rice fields like this before I was born. Seeing it with my own eyes really makes me feel sad for these people.
They slave all day and night in the scorching weather in Laos and they only get paid a small amount, each day.
Not to mention, everything in Laos is expensive, because it's all imported.
So they get low wages, and everything here in Laos, in general, is more expensive. Even more so than Thailand.
So I really don't know how the locals survive here.
