Badami, formerly known as Vatapi, is a town and headquarters of a taluk by the same name, in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. It was the regal capital of the Badami Chalukyas from 540 to 757 AD. It is famous for its rock cut structural temples. It is located in a ravine at the foot of a rugged, red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake. Badami has been selected as one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India.
Badami is famous for its sandstone cave temples. Cave temple 1 may be the oldest in Badami. It is made of red sandstone and has a hall with numerous pillars and a square shaped sanctum hollowed in the control back wall. There are paintings of amorous couples on the ceiling. Other features include Shiva and his wife Parvathi with a coiled serpent and the 18 armed lord Nataraja in 81 dancing poses.
Badami fort lies west of the Bhuthnatha temple, atop a cliff right opposite the Badami cave temples. The entrance to this temple is right through the Badami museum. It is a steep climb with many view points and dotted with little shrines. The path is laid with neatly cut stone, the same that adores all the architecture around.

Bhootnath Temple, Shivalaya Temples & Fort = Badami, KARNATAKA
The Badami Fort is perched on the top of a hill along with two Shivalaya complexes. Visitors have to walk all the way up to the fort. King Pulakeshi II, a devotee of Lord Vishnu had built the two Shivalayas that dates back to the 5th century. The Upper Shivalaya is devoted to Lord Shiva, who is the lord of the five elements (bhuthaas) whereas the lower one is dedicated to Ganesha. The outer walls of the Upper Shivalaya are sculpted with mythological tales, like the elephant and lion on top of the temple steps. A 16th century cannon is placed north to the Lower Shivalayas that looks down on the city. Close to this is a 14th century watchtower. The Bhootnath temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the destroyer. The form of Bhoothnath is said to be the combination of the God of soul. spirit and the Ghost The temple all dark inside has an image of Shiva in an angry and irate temper. The temple is situated near the Agastyatirtha Tank.

बदामी येथे तयार झालेल्या चार गुहा सर्व 6 व्या शतकानंतरच तयार करण्यात आल्या. ही गुहा भारतातील सर्वात जुनी गुहा मानली जाते.
बदामीच्या या प्रसिद्ध लेण्यांच्या बांधण्याचे सर्व श्रेय चालुक्य घराण्याला जाते. जुन्या लेणी असूनही, सर्व लेण्या अद्याप चांगल्या स्थितीत आहेत. इथल्या सर्व गुहा नागारा आणि द्रविड शैलीमध्ये बांधल्या गेल्या. या शैलीमध्ये बनवल्यामुळे इथल्या सर्व लेण्या खूप सुंदर दिसतात.
प्राचीन काळी बदामीला वतापी बदामी असे म्हणतात आणि त्या वेळी बदामी 6th व्या शतकात व 8th व्या शतकात चालुक्य घराण्याची राजधानी देखील होती. बदामी हे मानवनिर्मित तलावाच्या काठावर वसलेले आहे आणि नंतर काही किल्ले त्याच्या उत्तर व दक्षिण दिशेनेही बांधले गेले.

इथली सर्वात मोठी गुहा म्हणजे तिस third क्रमांकाची गुहा. या गुहेत भगवान विष्णूशी संबंधित अनेक कथा आहेत. या गुहेच्या एका बाजूला खास गोष्ट म्हणजे या गुहेत अतिशय सुंदर कोरीव काम आहे.
येथे जो चौथी गुफा आहे तो जैन धर्मं देवी देवतांचा समर्पित आहे.
21015 में मध्ये येथे फक्त की 500 वर्गाच्या दुरीवर एका बाजूला गुफा शोधली गेली सुमारे 27 हिन्दू देवी देवतांची मुर्तिया मिली.

Badami once a royal capital of the Chalukyas is now a sleepy town in Bagalkot district of Karnataka. The town was known as Vatapi previously. It is settled in a valley at the base of a furrowed, red arenaceous rock that rings Agastya lake. Badami is a place which is full of cave temples, entryways, fortresses, dedications and carvings.
The Chalukyas who had ruled Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh during 6th and 8th centuries had Badami as their capital. The greatest among the Chalukyas was Pulakeshi II who ruled between 610-642 AD. He defeated many kings and Mahendra Verman I, the Pallava king, was one among them. The state was founded by him in 540 AD.
The ancient Chalukyas of Badami are accredited with some of the best customs of Dravidian architecture admitting an observational fuse of older South Indian temple construction and ornamentation and the Nagara mode of North India. This beautiful blend of south and north passed on into the Dravidian temple building pattern.
Badami is the site of the 6th-7th century Brahmanical and Jain cave temples. The temples are cut out of solid rock with elaborate interior decorations that speak volumes of art and architecture of that period. There are 4 cave temples connected with each other with a flight of stairs.
People of Badami speak Kannada, Hindi and English. Their attire is traditional Indian cotton wear. It is a place for tourists who are interested in temples, art and architecture.

Caves 1 to 4 are in the escarpment of the hill in soft Badami sandstone formation, to the south-east of the town. In Cave 1, among various sculptures of Hindu divinities and themes, a prominent carving is of the Tandava-dancing Shiva as Nataraja. Cave 2 is mostly similar to Cave 1 in terms of its layout and dimensions, featuring Hindu subjects of which the relief of Vishnu as Trivikrama is the largest. The largest cave is Cave 3, featuring Vishnu-related mythology, and it is also the most intricately carved cave in the complex. Cave 4 is dedicated to revered figures of Jainism. Cave 5 may be a Buddhist cave. Another cave was discovered in 2015, about 500 metres (1,600 ft) from the four main caves, with 27 Hindu carvings.

Badami is situated on the west bank of a man made lake ringed by an earthen wall with stone steps; it is surrounded on the north and south by forts built in later times.
The Badami cave temples represent some of the earliest known examples of Hindu temples in the Deccan region. They along with the temples in Aihole transformed the Malaprabha River valley into a cradle of temple architecture that influenced the components of later Hindu temples elsewhere in India.

The Badami cave temples are a complex of temples located at Badami, a town in the Bagalkot District in the north part of Karnataka, India. They are considered an example of Indian rock-cut architecture, especially Badami Chalukya Architecture. Badami, the capital of the Early Chalukyas, who ruled much of Karnataka in the 6th to 8th centuries, lies at the mouth of a ravine with rocky hills on either side and a town tank in which water from the ravine flows. The town is known for its ancient cave temples carved out of the sandstone hills above
The Badami cave temples are composed of four caves, all carved out of the soft Badami sandstone on a hill cliff in the late 6th to 7th centuries. The planning of four caves is simple. The entrance is a verandah (mukha mandapa) with stone columns and brackets, a distinctive feature of these caves, leading to a columned mandapa -- main hall (also maha mandapa) and then to the small square shrine (sanctum sanctorum, garbhaghrha) cut deep into the cave.The temple caves represent different religious sects. Among them, two (cave 2 and 3) are dedicated to god Vishnu, one to god Shiva (cave 1) and the fourth (cave 4) is a Jain temple. The first three are devoted to the Vedic faith and the fourth cave is the only Jain temple at Badami.
The cave temples date back to 600 and 700 CE. Their architecture is a blend of North Indian Nagara Style and South Indian Dravidian style. As described above each cave has a sanctum sanctorum, a mandapa, a verandah and pillars. The cave temples also bear exquisite carvings, sculptures and beautiful murals. Important part of historical heritage at Badami cave temples are inscriptions in old Kannada script. There is also the fifth cave temple in Badami -- Buddhist temple in natural cave which can be entered only on all fours
The third cave is dedicated to Vishnu, and is the best and the biggest, and it has splendid giant figures of Paravasudeva, Bhuvaraha, Harihara and Narasimha. All these statues are engraved in a vigorous style. An inscription found here records the creation of the shrine by Mangalesha in 578. There are some paintings on the ceiling and the style indicates maturity but has lost its original dazzling colour. The bracket figures on the piers here are some of the finest.

Pune to Badami (Karnataka) was my first and solo ride for which I rode ~450 km. I rode to Badami in October 2018. (datestime stamp showing in video was wrongly set.)
I completed ride in 10.5 hrs. I started in the morning at 5 and reached Badami by 3:30 pm.
Route: Pune - Kolhapur - Nippani - Sankeshwar - Gokak - Yaragatti - Ramdurga - Badami.
Pune to Sankeshwar riding on Mumbai- Banglore highway which is in very good condition.
Road condition between some parts of Sankeshwar to Ramdurga was not so good which impact my riding. Last ~50 km ride Ramdurga to Badami was also very good.
Roads between Badami - Pattadakal - Aihole (35 km) also very good.
