Bagh e bahu A Beautiful Garden in Jammu city
BAGH-E-BAHU JAMMU | ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN INDIA
BAGH-E-BAHU
The garden is located on the bank of Tawi River in the lap of nature, away from the hustle and bustle of Jammu City. People from all walks of life find it a beautiful place to spend some time with the nature. So, there are young couples enjoying their relationships, school children playing some games, old people walking in the garden and tourists admiring this beautiful piece of Jammu.
Bagh-E-Bahu, Jammu
Jammu City is located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and considered as the gateway to the beautiful valleys of Kashmir and Laddakh. Being the last conveniently accessible city before the hilly terrain of Himalayas and the last major city before the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, this city see a massive influx of tourist throughout the year. People from all corners of India come to this city every year. But the irony is that 90 % of them move out from the city without visiting any other place except railway station and the airport. Majority of these tourists are the people who wish to go to the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. They catch a bus or cab, straight from the railway station or the airport to Katra, the base of the holy shrine. Other group of people continue their journey towards Kashmir Valley, the heaven of India. But very few of them spend some hours in Jammu City to explore the fort, the temples, the palaces, the gardens etc scattered all around the city.
Bagh-e-Bahu is located on the bank of Tawi River near the famous Bahu Fort. It is 4 kms away from the Jammu Tawi Railway Station and 9 kms. away from the Jammu Airport. Jammu is the largest rail-head of this part of India and connected by all the major cities on Indian Railway Network. Jammu Airport is connected primarily to Delhi and other Indian cities like Mumbai, Jaipur, Sri Nagar by the major airlines like Air India and Jet Lite as well as the other low cost airlines. Availability of cheap flight tickets make air travel a popular choice among the travelers, who want to travel on budget and have the shortage of time.
After reaching Jammu, there are two way to visit this garden: Either, Book an auto-rickshaw or cab outside the Railway Station or Airport, directly to Bagh-e-Bahu. Alternatively, Book a single day Jammu City Tour with any auto-rickshaw or taxi. It will also take you to all other interesting places of Jammu in a day.
We booked a single day tour with an auto-rickshaw driver outside Jammu Tawi Railway Station and paid Rs. 125 for the tour. The driver took us to Raghunath Temple, Peer Khoh Cave, two other temples before dropping us at the entrance of Bagh-e-Bahu.
Bagh-e-Bahu: The ticket window is just outside the gate and single visit cost is Rs. 5 per person. We entered through the main gate of the garden and came across a huge sign of BAGH-E-BAHU on a side, that is built by the plantation of small plants in the shape of those letters. There are series of beautiful flowers and small fountains on the other side of the walking path, once you entered in the garden.

Bagh-E-Bahu: A Beautiful Garden & Fort in Jammu City (बाग-ए-बहू)
Known for its forts, temples, palaces and gardens, Jammu city is the capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from being a gateway to Kashmir and Srinagar, Jammu is home to historic monuments and sprawling and scenic gardens such as Bagh-e-Bahu and the Mughal Garden. Characterized by extensive lawns, splendid fountains and enthralling flowers, Bagh-e-Bahu garden sits on the bank of Tawi River close to Bahu Fort.
Ambling around the garden, visitors enjoy panoramic views of beautiful flowers and fountains on either side. A great place to become one with nature, Bagh-e-Bahu holds various small stoned sculptures that add classy beauty to the lush green garden.
Bagh-e-Bahu means Garden at Bahu in Urdu. This garden sits by the side of the Bahu Fort, which was built around 3,000 years ago by Raja Bahulochan. With a variety of trees, flowers and shrubs, Bagh-e-Bahu makes a popular choice for tourists to spend time amidst nature.
Bagh-e-Bahu Aquarium, Jammu
Bagh-e-Bahu Aquarium, a recent addition to the Bagh-e-Bahu Garden that surrounds the Bahu Fort, at over 220 metres in length, has been titled as the largest underground aquarium in the country. Jammu Bagh-e Bahu Aquarium: An Aquarium on a Hilltop HD
The Aquarium near Bahu Fort on the hill top is run by the fishery department and is a new edition to the garden. The fish-shaped aquarium is the largest underground aquarium in the country and hosts an impressive collection of fish.I wasn't too sure of visiting this place, but I ended up spending a lot of time here. There are not enough aquaria in the country. It was a novel treat. The aquarium is 22m in length and exhibits around 400 species of fish. It also has a small museum attached to the end of the aquarium. The centre promotes aquatic awareness. Visitors can take away the beauty of the aquatic world that we otherwise rarely get to see because of human follies. Some of the more attractive fish found here are:Pirhana, yellow parrot, labeo rohita, neon jewel, silver arowana, sucker catfish, shark catfish, red shiner, bubble eye, black moor, cyprinus carpio etc
A View of Jammu City from Bagh-e-Bahu
I visited Jammu City in December 2013. I made the video of the view of city and Tawi bridge along with Bahu fort.
Bahu Fort - Jammu city
The Bahu Fort is located in Jammu city in state of Jammu and Kashmir. The fort, originally built by Raja Bahulochan some 3,000 years ago, was refurbished by the Dogra rulers in the 19th century. The fort is a religious place, and within its precincts has a temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, the presiding deity of Jammu. The temple is known locally as the Bave Wali Mata temple.
The building of the city of Jammu and the Bahu Fort are linked to a legend. Raja Jambu Lochan, brother of Bahu Lochan when on a hunting trip witnessed a curious scene of a tiger and a goat drinking water side by side at the same location in the Tawi River, without the tiger attacking. The Raja considered this a divine direction to establish the fort and his new capital here, as the scene he witnessed at this site represented peaceful coexistence. His brother, Bahu Lochan, is credited with building the fort.
The earliest historical recorded link to the fort is that of Raja Jambu Lochan and his brother Bahu Lochan, sons of a powerful ruler Agnigarbha II of the Jammu dynasty of Suryavanshi kings. Bahu, the eldest of Agnigarbha's 18 sons, is credited with establishing the Jammu city and building the fort. The earlier fort structure was modified over the years to a stronger fortified structure. The present fort was rebuilt, probably at the same location as the ancient fort, by Autar Dev, the grandson of King Kapoor Dev in 1585. Over the years the fort underwent demolitions and reconstructions from time to time, until Maharaja Gulab Singh reconstructed the present fort in the 19th century, which was further refurbished during the rule of Maharaja Ranbir Singh. They first established temples for their tutelary deities; the image of Mahakali deified in the temple in the fort was brought from Ayodhya.

Working for decades at Bagh-e-Bahu, lensmen at verge of starvation
No doubt, earlier professional cameramen were almost a permanent fixture as the tourist spots themselves, but now the photographers taking pictures of visitors at historical Bagh-e-Bahu garden in Jammu have almost lost their business. Their livelihoods are threatened by mobiles.
Out of 50 cameramen working throughout the day for decades at Bagh-e-Bagu garden, at present only around ten are working here. While the Jammu and Kashmir Government is aiming to boost tourism sector by all means but the shutterbugs at this tourist spot are at the verge of starvation as smart phones have replaced their professional lenses.
“Why can’t be a rehab policy for us if stone-pelters get relief, said most of the cameramen while taking to STATE TIMES correspondent Malu Sharma.
