DESCRIPTIVE NARRATIVE
Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The Baird bay area is bordered by the waters of the Great Southern Ocean. The limestone, sand, and rock of the land is carved by coastal erosion processes into bays, with sandy & gritty beaches, sand dunes, shoals, rocky cliffs & headlands, creating a myriad of coastal environments. This coastline suffers from the full force of the southern and western extreme winds and waves, carving coastal hills & valleys away over time, to become cliffs, bays, beaches, and wave cut platforms. Baird Bay is a ~ 15 Km long narrow, and often shallow bay, with rocky headlands and shoals at the entrance, giving protection to the inner waters. A dirt road to Streaky Bay passes its inner most branch, & many bordering properties have private boat ramps. Inland is rural farmland, part of the 'wheat belt' of Eyre Peninsula.
Calca is a very small township on the north eastern shore of Baird Bay, with no shops. Accomodation at or near the beach can be booked and rented, in the form of beach houses & shacks. Boat launching is done on the beach by 4x4 at high tide; there is no 'ramp'. Recommend using 'tinnies' with strong, reliable motors, as heavy boats are very difficult to launch, time is wasted waiting for the high tide, and low tide is best for getting close to the sealions. It is several Km by boat to the sealions & dolphins, and it can get very windy & choppy; tidal, flow and ocean swell can be dangerous in small boats. A local tourist boat operator can be booked, for sealion viewing trips. Video begins on the beach at Calca, then looking North, through west to south, at the bay's western headland. Travelling in the boat, see a small pod of Dolphins playing in the boat's bow wave. Look east & south at the headlands, then west, before looking underwater, and swimming with the Sealions of Baird Bay. The Sealions seem like playful, curious puppies, but they are large wild animals which should be left alone, and just watched.
