Hiking Pesuta Shipwreck Trail in Haida Gwaii
Around Tow Hill in Masset, Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada
Tow Hill is a large isolated volcanic plug located 21 km east of Masset on the north end of the Naikoon Peninsula of northeast Graham Island in Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada.
Tow Hill is approximately a 30 minute drive north east of the turn off to Village of Masset. The paved road passes through the Tow Hill Ecological Reserve area of the Naikoon Provincial Park and turns to gravel. Continue driving past the Agate Beach Campground sign to the Tow Hill Parking Lot next to the Hiellen River bridge.
Tow Hill is a unique attraction on Haida Gwaii. The hill rises 400 feet and towers over North Beach. Its face consists of columns of rock formed from eruptions of molten lava approximately 2 million years ago.
The trail follows the Hiellen River for approximately 100 meters at which time signage directs the hiker to either the Tow Hill or Blow Hole Route. The two trails connect with each other mid-way up Tow Hill creating a looped route for hikers wishing to visit both attractions. The 30 minute hike up Tow Hill is of an easy to moderate level of difficulty and is made more accessible by a well maintained boardwalk with stairs. The lava rock beach at the base of Tow Hill and surrounding the Blow Hole is a popular place to explore tidal pools.

Mamaguroove Accoustic at Edge of the World Aug 08
Accoustic performance for a workshop on political songs, by funk band Mamaguroove, on Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Island music festival Edge of the World, Aug 10, 2008. Performance of song (don't know exact title) that has the powerful lyrics ...only after the last fish been caught, only then will you find that money can not be eaten... taken from a Cree prophecy. Fabulous sound quality and decent visual footage of this intimate stage.

American Art - 1 North America: The Northern Lands
First video about the American Art serie. Any doubt? Send me a message.
Historia del Arte:
Land of the Art:
The Art in the American continent is divided in three main sides: North America, Mesoamerica and South America. The amerindians emigrated from Asia to America through the Bering strait in the last glaciation.
North America can be divided in various places. The Northern Lands are composed by the Artic Region, the Subartic Region and the Northwest Coast. The Eastern Woodlands is divided into Northeast Woodland and Southeast Woodland. The third group is the Plains, Plateau, Great Basin and the Coast of Californa. The last part is the Southwest, near the Mesoamerican zone.
The Northern Lands are composed by the Artic Region, the Subartic Region and the Northwest Coast. These are the places of current Alaska, Canada and Greenland.
Artic Region
The Inuit is a common name for the different eskimos people. Nomad life, hunting of animals as caribou, bears, whales or walruses. They use all the parts of the animals to feed, create clothes, homes and things to hunt.
Iglu: it’s the home of the inuit in winter.
Qamutik: a kind of sledge. They used dogs. It is made of wood, bones, hair of whales and even frozen fish.
Kayak: kind of canoe.
Umiak: other kind of canoe for more people.
Dorset Culture: they produced more figurative art, with Masks, or carved figures as the one of a Polar Bear.
Ipiutak Culture: very elaborated artworks with geometric designs. Also animals and persons. The example is One Point Hope Ipiutak Mask, that represents a human face with the mouth opened. They worked the ivory, including walrus tusks.
Thule Culture: the example is a house built with whale bones.
Inuit Basket: an example of a more recent art.
The Yup’ik of Alaska like to decorate almost all the tools. They created masks, generally made of wood, for ceremonials to give good luck to the hunters.
Cup’ik kayak stanchions: the one of the left depicts a male figure, the right one a female figure.
The Greenlandic Inuit worked the hides of animals. They also created masks. The most known manifestation are the tupilak, an evil spirit object.
Subartic Region
The people here also used animals as resources, as caribou or moose. The examples are a Painted Hide Tipi, a Man’s jacket with floral decoration and a little box with incrusted moose hair.
Northwest Coast
This is the art of tribes known as Haida, Tlingit, Heltsuk, Tsimshian, among others. Very complex vocabulary and style. Use of wood.
Totem: it is an object or an animal that in the mythologies of these cultures is an iconic symbol, with various meanings. The Thunderbird is a mythological figure used in these cultures, as you can see in the totems, and it is a symbol of power and strenght.
Haida Culture: they were known by their craftmanship. There are houses and totems in Skidegate, and the best place to see more of their totems is the Thunderbird Park, with many of them.
Tlingit Culture: there are totems of this culture in Ketchikan.
Heiltsuk: the artworks that there are here are a Post of a house, a Ladle with a skull, a couple Masks, and a Bentwood chest by Richard Carpenter.
Tsimshian Culture: the Bird Mask of the beginning is a great masterpiece of this art. The other items are a bag with sticks and a chest similar to the one of the Heiltsuk culture.
Nuu-chah-nulth Culture: also called Nootka, this culture has a nice eagle mask with mobile wings.
Kwakwaka’wakw Culture: the culture with this awesome name has very impressive artistic manifestations. They made totems, masks, jewels and clothes. Easiness and realism. Dances in ceremonials.
The transformation masks are very interesting, you can see how they work clearly in the images. The first is made of wood, horsehair and shell. The second one is one of a crow. The third one is one of a thunderbird.
The next three images are examples of totems. The first is the home of Mungo Martin.
Finally, the chilkat weaving is a kind of weaving practised by these cultures. This is an example of a chilkat blanket, used by the tribal members of high ranks in civic or ceremonial occasions, including dances.
