Glencar and the Ballaghbeama Gap
The interior of the Inveragh Peninsula in County Kerry is criss-crossed by a maze of minor country lanes. At the center lies the unspoilt countryside of the Glencar region. There, the clear waters of Lough Caragh the Caragh River, and Cloon Lough are home to Atlantic salmon, and are a favorite destination for keen anglers. Beyond Glencar, the many peaks of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks offer impressive ridge hikes, with outstanding views out across the Ring of Kerry.
From Glencar, the mountain road through the Ballaghbeama Gap cuts across the Macgillycuddy's Reeks at a natural pass in the mountain chain. Though open to two-way traffic, this minor road is basically a single-lane track, with occasional widened spaces for passing. Wandering sheep and a rock-strewn edge also make for slow and steady driving! From the summit of the Gap, the track heads down a long straight hill and emerges in the Black Valley close to the Upper Lake of Killarney. From there, Moll's Gap leads back to Kenmare, where many restaurants and bars await the weary traveler.
Ballaghbeama Gap (pass) Ireland - southbound
Ballaghbeama Gap (or Bealach Béime). If you do not want to drive the full Ring of Kerry, this pass is a nice alternative. That is; when you are not afraid of narrow roads and serious inclination. The reward is a stunning view. Driving the Ring counterclockwise take a left turn about 9 kilometers west of Killorglin, near Quaybaun (not all the hamlets are signed nor are all the roads named or numbered), then take a right turn after several hundred meters. Lough Caragh (lake) will be on your left hand side. Turn right to Glencar and 1.6 kilometers after passing it (with the Climbers Inn alongside the road) turn left. This road will take you to the gap. The movie starts somewhere after that left turn. See how the scenery slowly changes from just another (yet beautiful) Irish road to a spectacular ascend in a narrow V-shaped valley, filled with rocks, grass and sheep. Skip the first half of the movie if you like.
Kerry Way Tag 4 von Glencar nach Glenbeigh
Hallo Leute,

Ballaghbeama Gap descent
A two-way road, one car wide. Just passing the crest of the Ballaghbeama Gap (northbound). A rugged, stunning backcountry drive between Gearha South at R568 to Quaybaun at N70, essentially bisecting the Ring of Kerry. Worth doing if you are a patient, attentive driver. Tour-bus-free.

This drive is in one of the remotest parts of county Kerry. A tight, bendy, and quiet singletrack road, away from the busy Ring of Kerry.
