10 Must See Castles in Ireland
The picturesque country of Ireland contains many castles situated in its vast countryside. Ranging from medieval ruins, to hotels.
Most of these castles were not built to be royal residences so are more modest in their appearance, they were mostly built during the country’s Norman rule, and were designed primarily to act as defensive fortresses.
1. BUNRATTY CASTLE
Bunratty Castle, located in County Clare, is a large 15th century castle and is hailed as a one of Ireland’s popular tourist attractions.
The MacNamara family constructed the vast structure that still stands to this day back in 1425 but the initial settlement is thought to date back to the time of the Vikings. Today the castle is run by Shannon Heritage and is fully open to the public.
2. MALAHIDE CASTLE
Malahide Castle resides in County Dublin in the beautiful seaside town of Malahide. Some of the castle’s structures date as far back as the 12th century.
The castle boasts a decorated history as it has survived after attacks during the Battle of the Boyne and in the 1920s James Boswell’s private papers were discovered at the estate.
3. TRIM CASTLE
Trim Castle is a Norman fortress located in Trim, County Meath on the River Boyne.
The castle was built in the 12th century during the Norman rule and is said to have acted as the centre of Norman administration for the Lordship of Meath. The castle is also the largest Norman castles to have been constructed in Ireland. Trim Castle is referred to in the poem “The Song of Dermot and the Earl”.
4. BLARNEY CASTLE
Blarney Castle resides in Blarney near Cork and was built in the 15th century, with some of the older structures dating as far back as the 13th century.
Blarney Castle is one of the most famous castles Ireland has to offer due to it being the home of the Blarney Stone, the giver of eloquence in exchange for a kiss. As well as this, it is one of Ireland’s most visually attractive castles.
5. ROSS CASTLE
Ross Castle is in County Kerry and is the ancestral home of the O’Donoghue clan. The castle was built in the 15th century and resides next to the lake at Killarney.
Ross Castle was one of the last castles to surrender to Oliver Cromwell’s Roundheads during the Irish Confederate Wars. The interior of the castle is currently in ruin however; the exterior of the castle is a handsome tourist attraction.
6. PARKES CASTLE
Parkes Castle is situated near Leitrim in County Leitrim and the existing structure was completed in the early 17th century.
During the 20th century the castle underwent extensive restoration works and is now a hidden gem that stands as not only a tourist attraction but also a place in which to stay.
7. KILKENNY CASTLE
This 13th century castle resides in County Kilkenny.
Kilkenny Castle stands as a reminder of the Norman rule in Ireland during the 13th century and would have been used as a defensive fortress during the time.
8. DONEGAL CASTLE
Donegal Castle is one that is unlike others in Ireland in terms of its appearance, it is located in County Donegal on the River Esque.
The castle consists of buildings that date back to the 15th century and for the last two hundred years most of the buildings were in a state of ruin until a restoration project in the 1990s.
9. DUBLIN CASTLE
Dublin Castle sits in the heart of Ireland’s capital city and served as the centre of the British government in the country for centuries.
The castle has a checkered past, it was originally built as a defensive fortress during Dublin’s Norman rule, but later came to function as a royal residence. Today the castle is home to both a museum and the Chester Beatty Library.
10. BIRR CASTLE
Birr Castle is described as a large castle situated in the town of Birr in County Offaly.
The castle has been referred to as “One of the seven wonders of Ireland”. The site has been resided over since the late 12th century but the castle that stands today was constructed in the 17th century.

Amazing Video About Northern Ireland; Some great places to visit in Northern Ireland/Places to see
Places to visit in Northern Ireland - we included some of our favourite locations all across the North ( of Ireland ) also known as NI :-) There are so many more attractions to visit - but these are some of the locations we were lucky enough to visit recently.
Where have you been? Anywhere we should have included in this list? ** Award Winning Video**
We have been asked what are the best places to visit and what are the best things to do in Northern Ireland. This video is the start of a collection we will produce to answer this question. Some are traditional tourist attractions - others places locals tend to only know about.
For all those who once thought that Ireland is not filled with places they could visit, we are here with this video to prove them otherwise; Ireland is actually filled with lots of hidden gems that might not even fit in the days you are staying in the country; there are a lot of things to discover and visit in order to make your experience complete.
There are some general tips related to Ireland which we want to share with you if you are putting this country as your next destination. First of all, there are those beautiful days with the good weather but mostly there is the normal gloomy and rainy day in this city, so having something to protect you from the rain and warm you if you are cold is considered a must.
In addition to the weather, you should know that one of the interesting ways to get to know Ireland is through taking any of the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tours because in addition to the drivers who will most probably provide good information, these buses bring you too close to the landmarks that you want to visit, and at the same time might take you through streets which you have never considered walking through because you know nothing about or would have reached your destinations through using the underground.
And most importantly, make sure that if you are going to travel in winter - which is something we do not recommend because it would be very cold - you will need to make the right plan because the day is so short in winter and you might not be able to see all the things you planned to go to during the same day. Know where the landmarks are, choose those which are close to one another in order to visit during the same day, and always check when they open their gates and when they close in order not to end up going to a place that has already been closed before you could arrive.
Northern Ireland Tourism is exploding - and no wonder...I guess its only right we share our great location attractions with people from around the world :-)
Included in this video is -
Portaferry
Belfast City Hall (
Mourne Mountains
Castlewellan (
Dundrum Castle - Newcastle (

These are the top Ireland attractions which we thought tourists should visit. For those who have been to Northern Ireland before, what other places should we include from Northern Ireland for our next video? What other Northern Ireland attractions do you suggest that we should cover? Hopefully we got some decent Northern Ireland Tourist Attractions covered :-)
Are you asking us where you should go in Northern Ireland? Everywhere; yes, that's our answer, not that we are Irish people, but because this country is really holding lots of things and places which one should at some point come to visit and know more about, whether those historical places and sites or else those related to nature ;-) Okay we are biased... but we love this city and should provide this answer!
Amazing Video About Northern Ireland; Some great places to visit in Northern Ireland/Places to see
We think that Ireland with these different attractions we have placed should now be a destination you want to head to and visit, one that will take you through a tour of old landmarks as well as those which you might have already seen on TV screens and wondered where they are located. Its time you visited NI!

Magnificent Ireland 65 years ago
A 16mm film of a visit to Ireland. Great landscapes, Carna, Galway and Clifden are called on in the great old car (make?)
A reviewer report that Newport Mayo is at the start of the clip the Black Oak river he is fishing in. Paul C, wrote: The footage starting at around 55 seconds is of Achill Island, Co Mayo. The shot of the 2 women walking over a bridge is taken just on the island from Achill Sound looking back over the bridge along the road towards Tonragee. The steep roofed building on the left is now the site of the Railway Hostel and adjacent to the building on the right is now the excellent Alice's bar. (At 48 seconds the mountain in the background looks an awful lot like Slievemore to me but it's hard to say..? (Michael:) Incidentally I met lady Mayo in Hong Kong in 1955.
