만야라 호수는 탄자니아에서 일곱 번째로 큰 호수다. 헤밍웨이가 ‘아프리카에서 본 가장 사랑스러운 장소’라고 극찬을 했다는 이곳도 현재 국립공원으로 지정되어 있다. 공원을 구경하기 위해 가이드를 만나러 갔다. 공원 안에서는 이런 사파리 차를 타고 이동해야만 한다. 아직 절차가 남아있다. 공원에 입장하는 사람들에게는 서류가 필요하다. “이곳은 만야라 국립공원입니다. 여기서 먼저 서류를 작성해야 되는데요. 이곳이 국립공원이기 때문에 동물과 자연을 보호하기 위해서 엄격하게 관리를 하고 있습니다. 방문자분들은 서류를 작성하신 뒤에 공원으로 입장할 수 있습니다.” 내가 직접 서류를 작성할 필요는 없었다. 국제적인 공원관리 시스템을 도입해 여행사에서 미리 인터넷으로 예약을 대행해 주기 때문에 5분 정도의 시간이면 승인 받기에 충분하다. 드디어, 나의 사파리 여행이 시작되었다. 천장이 열려 있는 사파리 차를 타고 거친 비포장도로를 달려갔다. 나무 사이로 쏟아지는 햇볕이 나의 방문을 환영해주는 듯하다. 얼마 가지 않아 첫 번째 동물을 만났다. 얼룩말이다. 여행객들의 흥미를 끈 아프리카 물소는 느린 화면을 보듯이 천천히 걸었고 물속에서 쉬고 있는 하마와 차량 사이를 지나가는 코끼리 가족까지, 경이로운 풍경이었다. 원숭이들이 가던 차를 멈추게 했다. 개코원숭이다. 무리를 지어 생활하는 개코원숭이는 떨어진 나무열매를 먹으며 한가로운 식사시간을 보내고 있지만, 실제로는 사나운 동물이라고 한다. “개코원숭이 7마리가 모이면 사자를 이길 수 있다는 말이 사실인가요?” “때에 따라 달라서 뭐라고 말하기가 그런데 만약에 표범이라면 이길 수 있습니다. 표범이 원숭이 무리를 보고 나무 위로 도망가는 것을 종종 보았죠. 사자도 그럴 수 있을 것 같지만 확실하지가 않아요. 뭐 일어날 수야 있는 일이죠. 동물들이 자기 생명을 보호하고 살기 위해서는 언제 어느 때에 어떤 일이든 일어날 수 있습니다.” 개코원숭이의 식사를 보고 나니 나도 출출해졌다. 국립공원 한 가운데 있는 쉼터에서 많은 사람들이 가이드가 제공한 간단한 식사를 하고 있었다. 우리나라 여행객들도 있었다. “휴가를 추석이랑 붙여서 왔어요.” “일단 펜스가 없어요. 진짜 야생을 보는 느낌이고 가족끼리 와도 괜찮을 거 같아요. 친구들끼리 와도 괜찮을 거 같고요.” 어린아이도 있었다. “정말 좋은 경험이 될 거라는 건 믿어 의심치 않습니다. 우리 딸에게도 좋은 시간이 될 것 같아요. 보세요. 벌써 점심을 맛있게 먹고 있잖아요?” 문명 속에 살아가는 우리에게, 야생에서의 추억은 새롭게 다가오는 경험이었다. 나는 탄자니아에 오기 전부터 꼭 보고 싶은 것들이 있었다. 그것을 보기 위해 가까운 화랑을 찾아갔다. 첫 번째는 바로 탄자니아에서만 나온다는 보석, ‘아프리카의 푸른 별’이라 불리는 탄자나이트다. “탄자나이트는 이곳 탄자니아에서 채굴이 되고 다이아몬드보다 더 희소가치가 있습니다. 탄자나이트는 앞으로 10년이면 고갈될 것이라는 연구조사도 있는데요. 왜냐하면 탄자니아에서만 나오는 보석이기 때문이죠.“ 1960년대 킬리만자로산에서 번개를 맞고 푸른색으로 변한 돌을 발견한 것이 시작이라고 한다. 파란색과 보라색이 섞인 아름다운 탄자나이트는 12월의 탄생석이기도 하다. 아프리카에는 셀 수 없는 부족의 수만큼이나 다양한 원시미술이 존재한다. 그중 아프리카 가면은 서양의 화가들에게 영향을 주었는데, 이것이 프랑스에서 야수파 거장들이 등장하는 시초가 되었다. 또 하나, 내 눈으로 직접 확인해보고 싶었던 예술품이 있었다. 바로 마콘데 조각상이다. 물에 던지면 가라앉는다는 단단한 흑단나무로 만든 마콘데 조각상은 동아프리카의 대표적인 공예품이다. “마콘데 족이 직접 만드는 조각상입니다. 이것보다 큰 것도 있는데 만드는 기간이 8년까지도 걸립니다. 이 부족의 문화이기 때문에 마콘데 족의 모든 사람들이 이런 것을 만듭니다.” “이게 한 그루의 나무로 만든 건가요?” “그렇습니다. 뿌리부터 시작해서 꼭대기까지 나무 전체가 하나의 조각입니다.” 나무의 뿌리부터 세밀한 묘사를 보여주는 마콘데 조각상. 그중 '우자마'라는 군상은 가족나무라 불리며 다양하게 얽혀진 사람들의 형상을 하고 있다. 20세기 대표적 화가인 피카소가 큰 충격을 받아 그의 작품에도 영향을 끼쳤다고 전해진다. 마콘데의 독창성은 감탄을 자아내게 한다. 현대인의 관점으로 보아도 손색이 없을 정도로 세련되고 정교하다.
