Its eastern part was diverted to feed the mill of Barbegalwhile the western branch continued to supply the city of Arles.
The newly built bridge trenched through the Penne Ridge to feed the mill. The water operated two sets of eight vertical bucket wheels arranged on either side of a central aisle. They supplied energy to flour mills .

Aqueduct and Mills of Barbegal / Aquädukt und Mühlen von Barbegal
(Deutscher Text weiter unten / German Text below)
The Barbegal aqueduct and mill is a Roman watermill complex located on the territory of the commune of Fontvieille, near the town of Arles, in southern France. The complex has been referred to as the greatest known concentration of mechanical power in the ancient world. The site of the Barbegal aqueduct and mills is on a Roman aqueduct that was built to supply drinking water from the mountain chain of the Alpilles to the town of Arles, France (then called Arelate) on the Rhône River. Twelve kilometers north of Arles the aqueduct fed two parallel sets of eight water wheels to power a flour mill. The mill consisted of 16 waterwheels in two separate descending rows built into a steep hillside. The mills apparently operated from the end of the 1st century until about the end of the 3rd century. The capacity of the mills has been estimated at 4.5 tons of flour per day, enough to supply bread for as many as 12,500 inhabitants of Arelate at that time.
Jahrhunderts in Betrieb.
The Roman Mill at Barbegal- Professor Kevin Butcher
The astonishing water mill complex at Barbegal in Provence used to be considered a product of late antiquity, but the discovery of a coin of Trajan (AD 98-117) embedded in the plaster of the aqueduct has led to a reconsideration of the place of hydraulic technology in the earlier Roman empire.
An occasional series of short videos on coins that shed light on various aspects of ancient history, presented by Professor Kevin Butcher.
Ancient Roman Industrial Watermills
A description of two ancient Roman watermill complexes, the Janiculum watermill complex at Rome and the Barbegal watermill complex near Arles in southern France. The watermill complex at Barbegal has been referred to as the greatest known concentration of mechanical power in the ancient world. Apart from water-powered flour mills, water-powered sawmills for cutting marble and stone were also in use in the Roman Empire, for instance the 3rd century Hierapolis sawmill...

Luma Arles and Frank Gehry's Arts Resource Centre (drone footage)
Luma Arles includes a resource center designed by architect Frank Gehry; various industrial buildings rehabilitated by Selldorf Architects; and a public park designed by landscape architect Bas Smets.
A primary focus has been to create a centre of cultural activity that maintains the maximum flexibility for artistic research and production in the early part of this century that is global in outlook while responding to the specific needs and local context of the city of Arles, the South of France and the Mediterranean region.
The centrepiece of Luma Arles in the Parc des Ateliers will be a new Arts Resource Centre designed by Frank Gehry, which will house archives, exhibition and presentation spaces, seminar rooms and a café / restaurant.
The building includes a 8,700 square-metre lower level (archives, storage facilities, and programming) and also the Arts Resource Centre with its plaza-level, glass- enclosed indoor-outdoor space which together total 7,000 square-metre.
Luma Arles also encompasses six historic, large-scale industrial buildings, of which five are being revitalised by Selldorf Architects for presentations, installations, exhibitions and artists’ residencies.
One historic building, the Grande Halle, was renovated in 2007 by the initiative of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. The entire campus will be set within a public park designed by landscape architect Bas Smets.

Fontvieille is a French commune located in the department of the Rhone delta region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Located in the south-west of the Alpilles massif and north of Crau , near Arles , it is a town that lives mainly agriculture (several AOC) and tourism (mill Daudet ....).
The town of Fontvieille is located between the towns of Arles to the south and west, from Paradou to the east, Baux-de-Provence to the north-east and Saint-Etienne-du-Grès to the north. The provincial road 17 crosses the commune and the village on an east-west axis. The departmental roads 33 and 33a, 78f, 82 and 82a also pass on the commune.
Fontvieille has a train station on the track of the Alpilles train connected by the west to Arles . In the east, if this railway goes beyond the village, it does not exceed the limits of the town. The nearest motorway is the A54 , then the A7 to the east and the A9 to the west.
In the early Iron Age , when prehistoric habitats continue to be inhabited mostly new sites are colonized, as the plateau of Castelet, a low-lying plateau or Mount of Cordes. In the centuries preceding the arrival of the Romans, the territory of Fontvieille, like all the Alpilles, is populated by Ligures , Celts and Celto-Ligurians . Fontvieille is no doubt part of the territory of the Nearchi whose Ernaginum is the northern border, but also, perhaps, Anatilii , who live north of the Crau, whose Alpilles constitute the natural frontier
The town was founded in 1790 by deducting Arles territory. During this period it is enriched by the walled town of Estoublon xviii th century , the castle of Montauban and Halle covered still active ( xix th century ). There was still some of the dry marshes as historians report an unhealthy climate due to their presence. Agriculture produced wine, oil and fodder.
Stone quarries were in full production and materials shipped to Marseille via Arles. Alot to see such as Alphonse Daudet's windmill and Barbegal aqueduct and mill, a Roman watermill complex located on the territory of the commune.

It would be insulting for antiquity engineers to call: “INDUSTRIAL MILL” a considerable work made up with several km of pipes, 300 meters long aqueduct, 16 reach (biefs) 4,40 m long, 16 waterfalls, but which would had only 8 CV total power.
