Installing In-Habit: Project Another Country at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery
You might be forgiven for thinking that someone has a lot of time and cardboard on their hands when you visit In-Habit at Bathurst Regional Gallery. And you wouldn't be wrong. Indeed many hours and a whole lot of boxes go into the installation of this mammoth touring project. In-Habit, like Rome, was not built in a day.
The cardboard walls of this metropolis are constructed entirely from recycled cardboard boxes, sticky tape, toothpicks, paper and glue — a project which has art climbing the walls from floor to ceiling in each of the gallery spaces in order to build this magical monstrous-city.
Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan: In-Habit: Project Another Country is a Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation commissioned project, toured by Museums & Galleries of NSW. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

Ways Of Seeing Bathurst 2019
Projected onto the Library/Bathurst Regional Art Gallery forecourt area each night of the Bathurst Winter Festival between sundown and 10pm is Ways of Seeing, a series of video self-portraits created by local high school visual arts students and young creatives (aged 18-25 years).
Over 6 evenings in June at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, a group of eight young creatives with the guidance of local artists Henry Denyer-Simmons and Nicole Welch developed and produced a series of digital video self-portraits.
Participants worked in a collaborative environment in creating their video portraits, discussing how technology has impacted ideas of identity and place. During the workshops the young creatives looked at artists working in digital video such as David Stefanoff, Christian Marclay and Pipolotti Rist and considered how digital videos could be used to represent themselves with places around Bathurst and their own interests.
Sydney based digital media and design company Esem Projects worked with visual arts students at Denison College, Kelso High Campus and All Saints Scots College using obsolete video technology and recent video effects to create a suite of mesmerizing video portraits reminiscent of music videos from Rage and Video Hits.
Ways of Seeing provided these high school students to an opportunity work firsthand with people working in the professional creative industry and with technology they may never otherwise encounter.
“The Ways of Seeing illumination is a highlight of this year’s Winter Festival Program”, says BRAG Director Sarah Gurich. “The project showcases the importance of connecting professional artists with community to create meaningful, moving and imaginative public artworks.”
Ways of Seeing has been developed by Esem Projects and the Bathurst Regional Council Events Team with funding and support from Bathurst Regional Council and the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

The Making of Bridle Track, 2019, Luke Sciberras | Australian Tapestry Workshop
AUSTRALIAN TAPESTRY WORKSHOP
Luke Sciberras video 2019
‘Bridle Track, Hill End’ was jointly commissioned by Bathurst Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) and the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Society to celebrate 50 years of fundraising.
Handwoven at the Australian Tapestry Workshop by Chris Cochius, Sue Batten, Amy Cornall, Pamela Joyce and Karlie Hawking, ‘Bridle Track, Hill End’ will be the centrepiece of ‘Threads through Art: Australian Artist Tapestries’, an exhibition of tapestries at BRAG from 18 October to 1 December 2019.
Sciberras, who resides in Hill End, New South Wales, has an active connection to the Bathurst region. Sciberras describes his locale as an ‘enormous no-mans-land of common and crown land, abandoned farms; where the Macquarie and Turon rivers meet, the road rises and falls from the crossings and causeways as dramatically as a roller coaster’. This tapestry explores Sciberras’ deep connection to place through the interpretation of an expressive watercolour landscape.

Threads Through Art: Australian Tapestries
'Threads Through Art: Australian Tapestries' is a celebration of Australian art through the tapestry medium. Swiss architect and artist Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret) famously described tapestries as murals of our time with the advantage being portable. Enthusiasm for the tapestry medium emerged in Australia through exposure from touring exhibitions such as Contemporary French Tapestry (1956), Aubusson Tapestries (1966), 17th & 18th Century French Tapestries (1971) and, most recently, The Lady and the Unicorn (2018). Artists including Margo Lewers, John Coburn, Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan and Charles Blackman collaborated with weavers and tapestry workshops in France and Portugal.
Since its inception in 1976, the Australian Tapestry Workshop (formerly the Victorian Tapestry Workshop) and its talented weavers have collaborated with numerous highly regarded Australian artists, transforming their artworks into thread. A selection including Richard Larter, Janet Laurence, Ginger Riley Munduwalawala, Nell, David Noonan, John Olsen, William Robinson, Gareth Sansom, Luke Sciberras, Arlene Textaqueen and John Wolseley feature in this survey.
This exhibition is developed with Australian Tapestry Workshop and will feature tapestries from public and private collections across Australia.
