Making Batik at the Batik Boutique: A Truly Unique Malaysian Experience! Malaysia History Minute!
When we found out my Mom and her friend Ann were going to visit us in KL, Iris and I tried very hard to think of some unique and different things we could do with them. It was Iris who first thought of making batik and I must admit, I thought it was a stupid idea at the time. Boy oh boy, was I wrong. This was truly one of the best and most unique things we have done since moving here four years ago. I want to do it again before we leave next summer!
So I started out with the idea of making this a Malaysia History Minute, yes the introductory and concluding little speeches, but I think it stands on it's own better as a brief insight into batik and the wonderful social enterprise that is Batik Boutique. They sell some wonderful products but they also do some wonderful work with the local community. Check them out!

MALAYSIA SHOPPING | CENTRAL MARKET KUALA LUMPUR | BEST SHOPPING 2019

In this Episode I'm taking you to Central Market in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. This episode explores the various colors of this market which is famous for its cultural rendition and shopping.
Central Market is one of KL’s most familiar landmarks and a popular tourist attraction. Built in 1928, it is a short walk away from Petaling Street
Central Market is strategically located close to major public transportation links, making it easy to access from all major KL destinations. The second floor has several restaurants and a food court serving Asian cuisine.
Another way to describe Central Market is to say that it is like New York’s SoHo flea market – the merchandise here is cheap and traditional goods such as batik, embroidery carvings, souvenirs, and sculptures are on offer. The Batik Emporium houses well-known batik designer labels, while outside local artists painting renderings of the busy street or impromptu song-and-dance performance take place. Divided into different zones, vendors’ stall zones are distinctive by race: the purpose of this zoning practice is to let visitors get an insight into the cultural differences of the various races in Malaysia.

Hey what's up guys this is Johnson for JohnsonMalaysia.com welcome to Malaysia today as usual, I am going for a very interesting traditional Malaysian thingy.
What Souvenir KL
Most of the time when I bring tourist, they do ask me “Johnson what is the best thing I can get from Malaysia / Kuala Lumpur”. Many tourists not aware things that are call as Malaysian Souvenir are not from Malaysian but from foreign countries, sold at the Point of Interest. I have nothing against them, but surely you want something Malaysian! Right?
Licensed tour guide
Personally, I always advise tourist to look at what I'm wearing, I mean my shirt. I am a government of Malaysia Licenced Tourist Guide and as one, I am required to be on a batik shirt, while I’m doing tour guiding.
Forty years’ experience
I'm meeting up with my friend, who I know some 6 years now. He's Mr. Lazim. Lazim have been doing painting for the past almost 40 years. He's a very humble and patient man, who will teach you even when you make many mistakes. I made an appointment with him to learn batik painting today.
Huge painting
Mr. Lazim, when I met, he was doing hand drawn batik design on a huge piece of cloth. As you watch my video. He is going through step by step on how to produce a batik painting. He showed the tools need, like canting copper pen like wax tool, Resin from pine tree, wax, cotton cloth / silk colors are the material needed. Basically, Batik means drawing using molten wax.
History
The Egyptian could have been the earliest to apply, it was found in the wrapping of the Mummy using linen cloth mixed with wax. Somehow this technique was introduced to the Archipelago. The Javanese became pioneers and later came to Malaya, especially the state of Kelantan and Terengganu. In the past, it was a for the royalties. Once, during the Malacca sultanate period, (if you would like to go on a Malacca / Melaka tour, please don't forget to contact JohnsonMalaysia.com for the UNESCO World Heritage site historical tour.)
40 Batik Design
The Sultan of Malacca then was interested in Batik cloth, His Highness asked his great man to search for designs from India. His Highness wanted at least 40 different designs geometrically and flower / flora. Unfortunately the sent authority was unable to find such and he decided to create his own design, however on the way back from India the ship capsized. The designed cloths were destroyed with only two remaining. The Melaka Sultan was not pleased.
Official attire
Time has moved on now, so many different designs for men and woman. The government of Malaysia has made Thursday as batik attire day. The Malaysian batik is very unique by its own designs. Also colorings are vibrant and bright, like chili red, beautiful butterflies, leaves and floral designs.
Today, Mr Lazim is going to teach me on the basic of batik painting. I would like to introduce this to all my tourists who want to follow in my KL historical or heritage tours, come and try. First, it looks professional and you might not have the confidence to do, but once you follow surely you can, so please watch the whole video and see how technique is applied.

EP 60: Amy Blair, Founder of Batik Boutique
There are people that come into our lives and completely change us. Maybe it’s a teacher or a coach who really believe in us and encourage us in ways others haven’t. Or maybe it’s a friendship… a friendship that starts under unusual circumstances or in a place you’d least expect… but that friend becomes someone who changes your life. That friend teaches you something about the world around you and teaches you something about yourself. That friend challenges you to do something radical… not in like that “party hard” way… but like, the world-changing, community building, life-altering way. Maybe it’s just that friend you can have real conversations with - that you can speak life and truth to… Can you think of that friend? Now, what if that friend didn’t even speak your native language?
My guest this week is Amy Blair, the founder of Batik Boutique! After moving to Malaysia in 2007, Amy befriended a single mother who helped to teach Amy the language and through their friendship, conversations, and the opening of doors, Amy began Batik Boutique… a business with a vision to provide sustainable income opportunities for women and artisans in Malaysia. I loved my conversation with Amy and I know you will too! Enjoy this episode!
Amy: Amy Blair is the Founder and CEO of Batik Boutique, an award winning social enterprise based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Amy has lived in Malaysia for 10 years with her husband and now 3 kids. Amy started Batik Boutique as a response to a gap in the local tourism market and the story of trying to help a local friend who was a single mother trying to make ends meet, and who happened to own a sewing machine.
Batik Boutique uses hand-dyed Malaysian textiles to impact the community by:
Producing Hand-dyed Textiles: Incorporating textiles hand-dyed by local artisans Empowering Artisans: Training women in life and job skills that lead to income generation Benefitting the Community: Contributing to the practical needs of those around them and giving a portion of proceeds directly to artisan needs To date, there are over 150 artisans including batik producers and seamstresses trained. Amy saw the struggle of women, especially mothers, who did not have sustainable work opportunities, and she started a sewing training centre located in government subsidized housing to offer employment women in marginalized communities.
Amy leads her Batik Boutique team in corporate projects with companies like Volvo, BP, and Starbucks Malaysia supping customized corporate gifts. She worked to establish an international partnership with a US fashion label, establishing Batik Boutique the Malaysian artisan group. She was selected as “Top 50 Expatriates You Should Know” by the Expatriate Lifestyle magazine and was selected as Texas A&M University’s “Top 12 Under 12” Alumni for her contribution to empowering artisans globally.
Her life motto is: “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.” ~John Wesley, Theologian
