Virtual Tour of the Batiquitos Lagoon Hiking Trail in Carlsbad, California
In San Diego there is a phenomena called June Gloom. June Gloom is a southern California term for a weather pattern that results in cloudy, overcast skies with cool temperatures during the late spring and early summer. June Gloom in southern California is caused by the marine layer effect common to the West Coast, and is enhanced by the Catalina eddy local to southern California. May and June together are usually the cloudiest months in coastal Southern California, and today was a exemplary day for this effect. As I hiked closer to the Pacific Ocean, the sky became increasingly overcast and the lighting conditions for excellent photography eroded. Thus, many of the video clips I shot this weekend weren't as good as they could have been if this location were 5-10 miles inland. The marine layer effect, composed of stratus and/or stratocumulus clouds, is also called May Gray, No-Sky July, and Fogust as it occurs in other months, and is collectively known as Summer Bummer. It can reach 15 miles or further inland to places like Temecula, California overnight, but that is rare. Typically I'll see the June Gloom effect during the day close to the coast, only to look Eastward and see the border where it ends 5-10 miles inland, where it was sunny all day. Thus, when you buy a house in Southern California or a similar climate elsewhere in the world, you should consider that buying too close to the coast and/or too high in hill elevation is actually a bad move, in addition to being twice as expensive as living inland.

Batiquitos Lagoon
The Batiquitos Lagoon consists of 610 acres with a drainage basin of about 55,000 acres. The watershed basin includes the cities of Carlsbad, San Marcos, and Encinitas, with its primary freshwater tributaries being San Marcos Creek from the east and Encinitas Creek which flows north along Green Valley, entering the lagoon under El Camino Real and La Costa Avenue, respectively. The lagoon has a very easy flat trail about 1.5 to 2 miles long on the north side of the lagoon. No bikes or horses are allowed however dogs are allowed as long as they are wearing a leash. During the day there are many people on the trial. The trial is roped off and access to the water is not allowed. There parking at both ends of the trail. This was my first time visiting this lagoon. Nice easy walk. ADMINSATION: Free

History
THe carlsbad region was originally inhabited by the Luiseño people (native tribe). Hunters took antelopes, bobcats, deer, elk, foxes, mice, mountain lions, rabbits, wood rats, river otters, ground squirrels, and a wide variety of insects. Eventually the Spanish arrived and established Mission San Luis Rey de Francia in 1798 and changed the culture. The area was farmed for many years and became an agricultural community that was known for growing zuchini, peas, corn, beans, squash, and other vegetables. Then in 1918 water from the San Luis Rey river begans supplying consistent water giving way to avocado and citrus orchards being added.
