ANTIQUES COLLECTION | Battambang Museum - Cambodia
The Battambang museum was opened in the mid-1960s, said Kim Sophorn, an archeologist and the museum director. Storage space was added in 1997 and two wings built in 2010.
Two elegant - though as yet nameless - avenues, with parkland down the middle, grace the city centre. One goes by the Centre Culturel Français (one block north of NH5), while the other stretches west from the worthwhile Battambang Museum . Highlights include fine Angkorian lintels and statuary from all over Battambang Province, including Phnom Banan and Sneng. Signs are in Khmer, English and French.
Battambang’s Museum is not as well blessed with exhibits as its counterparts in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, however it still houses a treasure trove of beautifully sculpted lintels and other substantial artifacts from all over Battambang Province, including pieces from Phnom Banan and Sneng, as such it should be a definite stop on anyone's visit to Battambang. Two particularly interesting pieces are a 13th century statue of a Bodhisattva ‘tattooed’ with a thousand Buddhas, and a well worn depiction of Yama on a buffalo. Next door to the Museum is a small exhibition area that often has interesting displays featuring information on local agriculture and fishing practices, and local legends and folk tales.

Battambang Province | Battambang city
Battambang Province | Battambang city
Battambang is Cambodia's second-largest city and the capital of Battambang Province, which was founded in the 11th century. It is the former capital of Monton Kmer and lies in the heart of the Northwest of Cambodia. Until the war years, in which almost every infrastructure was destructed it was the leading rice-producing province of the country.
The name Battambang or Batdambang, literally means loss of stick referring to a legend of the Preah Bat Dambang Kranhoung (Kranhoung Stick King). The population is nowadays around 250,000 people . It's a riverside town, home to some of the best-preserved, French colonial architecture in the country.
Until recently Battambang was off the map for road travellers, but facilities have recently been improved and it makes a great base for visiting the nearby temples, such as Phnom Banon and Wat Ek Phnom, as well as the closedby villages.
It's a secondary hub on the overland route between Thailand and Vietnam, and if the National Highway No 6 from Poipet to Siem Reap is ever upgraded it'll become an even smaller hub. The network of charming old French shop houses clustered along the riverbank is the real highlight here, and there are a number of Wats scattered around the town.
The small museum has a collection of Angkorian-era artifacts, and beyond the town there's a number of hilltop temples, yet more Wats and a pretty large lake. One of the more famous hills is Phnom Sampeau (Ship Hill) with the notorious killing caves.
Battambang did not give way to the Khmer Rouge movement after the fall of Phnom Penh, but it?s been in the centre of the ongoing government Khmer Rouge conflict ever since the Vietnamese invasion in 1979 pushed the genocidal regime out of Phnom Penh and to the Northwest. Until the surrender deal of Ieng Sary (Khmer Rouge number three man based in Pailin),Battambang was the Khmer Rouge stronghold in the region.
In the earlier history Battambang flip-flopped back and forth between Thailand (called Siam before their 20th-century renaming) and Cambodia. It's been a part of Thailand most of the time since the 15th century, with Cambodia regaining control (more specifically due the French) in 1907. The Thais grabbed it again, with Japanese assistance, in 1941 and kept the region in their camp until the World War II years in 1947.
The Allied Forces helped persuade the Thais that the region was originally part of ancient Cambodia and the world community would not take kindly to the Thais holding onto it further. Like the rest of the Northwest, there is still a lot of Thai influence apparent. The main currency is still the Thai Baht and many people are able to converse in Thai. But the area is very Khmer, with ancient Khmer ruins scattered around, and even the ways of life are much more similar to the rest of Cambodia than to Thailand.
Battambang city is a peaceful and pleasant place these days. The main parts of the city are situated closed to the Sangker River, a tranquil, small body of water that winds its way through Battambang Province. It is a nice, picturesque setting. As with much of Cambodia, the French architecture is an attractive bonus of the city.

Geography
The provincial capital of Battambang is the second largest city in Cambodia (2007 estimated population around 1/4 million people). It is located in one of the biggest rice-growing areas in Southeast Asia. The average altitude of the province is around 50m. The province is bordering to the North with Banteay Meanchey, to the West with Thailand, to the East and South with Pursat and the great lake Tonle Sap.
The country's total surface is about 11,702 sq/km with around 67.7 inh/sqkm. The city is on both the highway and railroad linking Phnom Penh with Thailand; after the outbreak (1970) of civil war in Cambodia, the Battambang-Phnom Penh road was a prime target of the Khmer Rouge insurgents, who, by capturing it, severed Phnom Penh from its major source of rice.Battambang was acquired by Thailand in 1809 and returned to Cambodia in 1907. The city has also a technical university.

Cambodia March 1999 - Nightline - Pailin: Boomtown'
Educational and Historical purposes only. From ABC News Nightline with Ted Koppel. Program aired at 11:30 pm US eastern time. Only Nightline under Ted Koppel and EP Tom Bettag would devote time to global issues; devote 30 minutes to Cambodia. No US broadcaster would do so today. This broadcast from March 18th, 1999 provides a look at what happened to Cambodia's murderous Khmer Rouge. In short, they retired, went west toward the Thai border and made money in gems, casinos, and prostitution. That's the way it was at the end of the decade - 20 years after the KR lost power in Phnom Penh.
Battambang Architecture - Top Buildings (site of Angelina Jolie film)
This video shows off the architecture and other buildings around Battambang, Cambodia! It includes a site where Angelina Jolie's new Netflix movie about Cambodia was filmed. I tried to show off the city and its history a little. I'm by no means an expert, but I hope this video gives people a little understanding of Battambang.

Grape Plantation at Battambang Province in Cambodia
Have ever heard of Grape Plantation or Grape Wine from Battambang province? We went to Banon Temple. On the way back, we stopped at the Grape Plantation, actually, it's a like a showroom or shop where we can see the real small plantation with fresh grape and beautiful girl promote the grape wine. We took lots of pictures with the grape fruits and tried their grape wine. It was great. We bought the small bottle of grape wine for just 10,000 Riel per bottle. It's a famous grape wine in Cambodia at Battambang province.

Battambang is a city on the Sangkae River in northwestern Cambodia. It’s known for colonial buildings such as Sala Khaet, the former Governor’s Residence. Battambang Provincial Museum has artifacts from local Khmer temples. Nearby, Phare Ponleu Selpak is a circus and performing arts school for underprivileged children. North of the center are the ruins of Ek Phnom, an 11th-century pagoda with sandstone carvings.
Battambang is known for its statues which seemingly decorate every public place. Most are of animals (mythical and real) and divinities.
The most famous of these statues is on the main road in from Phnom Penh and is of an ancient Khmer King holding a stick which he used to quell rebellions in the Battambang area. The name of the town / province comes from this legend.
Battambang's central market
The town also has a number of fine early-20th-century French colonial buildings. Most of the colonial buildings can be found along the waterfront (St 1), especially just south of Psar Nat (which is quite impressive in itself). Famous Art Deco buildings are the Central market, the swimming pool Victory (riverside) and the train station. Along streets 1, 2, 21/2 and 3 are charming examples of Chinese, French and Italian architecture, with peculiar mirroring of houses constructed on one side in brick, square pillars and on the other one in concrete, round pillars. Street 3 has some charming French shop-houses.
The Governors Residence is the most impressive colonial building, a legacy of the early 1900s with balconies and wooden shutters and grand reception room with a 5m ceiling. It was designed by an Italian architect for the last Thai governor, who departed in 1907. The interior is closed but you can explore the grounds at leisure.
Battambang Museum (admission US$1) displays fine Angkorian lintels and statuary from all over the Battambang province, including Phnom Banan and Sneng, and it has multi-lingual signs.
Around Battambang:
Phnom Sampeu's Killing Caves
Phnom Sampeu, a hill with the Killing Caves of the Khmer Rouge, a few others caves adorned with Buddhist statues, and a monastery with two Buddhist Stupas on the hilltop. Entry is US$3 - and it takes about 1 hr to climb the circuit to the monastery on top, with a short-cut leading back down to the shops and restaurants which line the approaching road. Just before the ticket office, you can see a cave about 100 metres or so up the rock face. At around about 5.30 or thereabouts every evening, you can witness a steady stream of bats exiting the cave. It takes about 40 minutes for all the bats to leave. There must be tens of thousands of bats that make this journey every night. Some locals say over 1 million bats, but who knows? Whatever the number is, it's an amazing sight. From the main road, you should be able to see the bats forming various formations in the sky.
Wat Banan,Entry is US$3 - the so-called mini-Angkor wat, an impressive flight of stairs lead up to a dilapidated Angkor-style temple which is still in use as a Buddhist shrine. Once at the top of the temple follow the trail on the south side of the hill. It will lead you down and eventually to a breathtaking cave. Huge sky light ceilings and plenty of bats.
Secret Cave: (12°56′57.89″N, 103°08′11.15″E)
Wat Baydamram, a temple where hundreds of fruit bats live in trees under the protection of the Buddhist monks.
Wat Ek Phnom
Wat Ek Phnom, another Angkor-type temple ruin, about 15 km north west of Battambang. The road runs along lovely small rivers flanked by trees and small villages making it a generally nice area. Approaching Wat Ek Phnom, you suddenly encounter a giant Buddha statue in the Wat, which is certainly picture-worthy. The grounds of the Wat also have an Angkorian era temple which is in relatively good shape and with some interesting carvings. Entry US$1.
Wat Samraong Knong, roughly translated as 'Wat in the forest' is an extremely old pagoda on the eastern side of the Sangker River. The eerie old Wat was used as a Khmer Rouge prison, and there were many executions on the premises. A new pagoda is now being built, and there is a memorial to the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime, with graphic illustrations just to the north.

“The teeth are made from bayonets. The Khmer Rouge would stab people to save bullets. The rest of the Naga heads were made from cut up AK-47 machine guns,” says Mr. Vanndy.
After the war, the Japanese government paid for a program to collect and destroy guns from former Khmer Rouge soldiers.
“They’d collect guns and in exchange build the village a water well or something else useful - in order to get the guns out of people’s hands.”
The statue’s structure resembles a traditional Khmer harvesting sickle. This forms the “tail”. Then Mr. Vanndy added five Naga heads to represent the Cambodian people.
“An ancient hindu legend says the Khmer people descended from the Naga.”
It’s estimated that the Khmer Rouge murdered 2 million of their own Cambodian citizens - including Mr. Vanndy’s father, aunt and uncle.
