Batticaloa Dutch fort
The Fort was captured by the Dutch from the Portuguese in 1638. It was the first Portuguese Fort in Sri Lanka captured by the Dutch. In the year 1772, the Fort fell to the British.
The Fort guarded by four bastions, protected by the sea from 2 sides and by a moat on other 2 sides. The ramparts of the Fort are built with solid rocks, since man did not discover cement yet. According to Folk Lore, elephants were used to transport the rocks to the construction site. The watchtowers constructed at the four corners of the building enabled the sentries to have good view of the open sea. A moat surrounding the Fort was constructed for additional protection from the enemy.
Batticaloa Fort houses within its premises a Buddhist stupa and Chatra dated back to 1st century BC. There are several other buildings around the fort built at different periods. The Dutch Fort currently houses the District Secretariat and few other government offices. The Government has a plan to shift the District Secretariat to another place allowing the development of Dutch Fort as a tourist destination that will attract more and more tourists to the district.
Hours Open: Tourists can view the Fort any time from the Lagoon or the Ghanthi Park. Since the main Government Offices are housed in the Fort currently, there are some limitations in visiting freely around the Fort.
The Dutch Fort of Batticaloa is one of the most important landmarks of Colonial rule. The Fort was originally built by the Portuguese in 1628 as their trading and economic administration centre. It was used to trade cinnamon, pepper, chili, and miscellaneous things to other countries. It is actually called “Dutch” as it was captured by the Dutch 10 years later.
Bordered by a moat on two sides and the lagoon on the others, the stone fort remained in Dutch hands for nearly two centuries before the British entered the country in the late 18th century and took control of the Dutch fortifications. The site has significant religious implications dating back to the 1st century B.C., evidenced by a Buddhist stupa and shatra from the Ruhuna Kingdom that remains in the area.
Sea erosion, insufficient funding, encroaching development, and the tsunami of 2004 have all conspired to damage the structure and its surrounding fortifications. Further, ethnic violence that has rocked the island for much of the last 30 years has prevented conservation efforts while dividing communities and threatening security in the area. However, plans to open the fort for public use can help unite the community and have the potential to further promote the fort as a religious and historic symbol.

This is located by Trincomalee town. The famous Koneswaram Temple is located inside this fort. This Hindu temple earlier know as temple of thousand Pillars. According to historical information,Portuguese had demolished the old Koneswaram Temple and they build this fort with the parts of that. The remaining things were push down to the sea. According to the historical facts, this place also known as Gokanna and the Gokanna Temple also located in side this, where the current Koneswaram Temple is located.Occupying the neck of a narrow peninsula, Fort Fredrick has been a defensively important site for centuries. A fortress was initially constructed here by the Portuguese in 1623 and later rebuilt by the Dutch. The British took over in 1782 (look out for royal insignias crowning the tunnel-like gateway that pierces the fort’s massively stout walls).
The fortress is occupied today by the Sri Lankan military, but you're able to wander around substantial parts of this once huge garrison.
Assorted cannons and artillery are dotted around the enclave, which also contains a small number of spotted deer.
The impressive Georgian-style mansion (not open to visitors) is Wellesley House , named after a Duke of Wellington. It dates from the late 1700s.
There's also a big standing Buddha statue at the Gokana Temple , from where there are fine views of Trinco and the coastline.

I hired a bicycle for the day and cycled around the east-coast city of Batticaloa. Their population is roughly 75% Tamils and 25% Muslims, with a few Sinhalaese and, as I discovered, 1 Englishman living there.
Typical of rental bikes in Sri Lanka it wasn't in great condition. No gears, rusty, breaks barely worked and a slow puncture on the front tyre. I still managed a good tour of Batticaloa and met a bunch of friendly people on the way.
I only saw three other white faces the whole day, and they were at the beach. The city itself seems to be a place tourists don't go. In such places the locals are always extremely friendly and happy to see that a foreigner finds their city interesting enough to visit.

Gandhi park is the the most visited place in Batticaloa town. The new park is located in a heart of batticaloa town. Well maintained and clean at all times. The newly constructed Gandhi Park was opened in August 2013 and is awesome to watch. The famous Batticaloa Gate too situated within this park. The most glamorous fact that attracts more visitors to Gandhi Park is the amazing view of the lagoon which is busy with fishermen with their fishing rods and nets engaging in fishing. If you have got a fishing rod with you, join them and enjoy fishing. The row of chairs and well maintained green plants inside Gandhi Park give you total relaxation. The gold colored statue of “Mahatma Gandhi” adds real value to this park.

Even though the fort is known as the Dutch Fort, the structure was built by the Portuguese in 1628. The dutch captured the Fort from the Portuguese on May 18th 1638 and then the British occupied it from 1745. It is a square structure with 4 bastions, bordered by the lagoon on two sides and a moat on the other two sides. Batticaloa Fort houses within its premises a Buddhist stupa and Chatra dated back to 1st century BC and a small room of exhibits used during the history of the fort
The Dutch Fort is located at Puliyanthivu island, in the town of Batticaloa, close to the Weber Stadium and the public library. At present the Kachcheri (Government Agent's office) is housed within the fort premises. Plans are underway to move the Kachcheri to another location and dedicate the fort for tourism activities, however it is possible for visitors to walk the walls and explore the fort even now.

Koddamunai bridge connects Puliyanthivu island to the rest of Batticaloa main land. Before the koddamunai bridge was constructed, Batticaloa gate area was used at a loading and unloading point. Old cranes used during that time is still visible at the location. It is believed that William Ault, the first Methodist missionary landed in Puliyanthivu. A statue is placed next to the Batticaloa gate to remember is valuable service.
