BATTICALOA, SRI LANKA - After visiting Kandy and Central Sri Lanka, we drove to the East coast of Sri Lanka, and first to Batticaloa, a wonderful city surrounded by lagoons. Ruzaina arranged for us to meet up with the Sri Lanka Special Forces to cook lunch and eat in their mess hall, but it turned out to be more of an adventure than just that!
We arrived to the Special Forces base camp, and they were already cooking the meal for lunch. But also our plan for the day was to buy a fish and cook a big fish, so the Captain called his fisherman friend, and he had a special type of shark (which is commonly eaten in Sri Lanka) and said it was his favorite. So we ended up getting the shark to cook and share with the entire Special Forces unit. We ended up missing the main lunch, but we had lunch in the General's office instead with the delicious mix of local dishes and the addition of the shark curry. It was a privilege to have this opportunity.
Sri Lankan Batticaloa food - In the evening we were invited to a local home in Batticaloa to eat a typical regional Batticaloa Sri Lankan food meal. The meat blew me away with the flavors and ingredients, and it was my first time to eat mountain knotgrass, which was delicious.
Thank you to everyone who generously hosted me in Batticaloa, for the delicious food, and to Ruzaina for arranging everything. Go check out here videos:

Batticaloa Lighthouse and Lagoon Park, Popular Travel Place to Visit in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka
Batticaloa Muttuwaran Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful attractions in Batticaloa along with its Lagoon Park, which is also called Eco Park. The Lighthouse was built in 1913 by the British when Sri Lanka was under the British rule. It is 28 meters tall and located about 5km distance from Batticaloa town.

The surroundings are quite fascinating and it gives you a feeling of the eastern side in this country. I went there in the morning and the weather was wonderful and wasn't too harsh. Either visit the place in the morning or at evening as afternoon can be difficult for you to explore. There are so many coconut trees in a one side and on the other side, you can gaze at the beautiful and famous lagoon.
The reason why this lighthouse is called as Muttuwaran is, the locals call this as where the lagoon meets the sea where the name is translated as Muttuwaran.
There are many activities you can do around the lighthouse and some of them are, taking boat rides around the beach, seeing environment learning center library and lagoon viewing hall and spend a leisurely time at the eco-park to have a picnic. You can also go to the top of bird viewing tower to see the surroundings.
The area is ideal for cycle riding and walking, especially in the evening. One thing I noticed is, the place is not overcrowded and you have a pleasant time. For a photographer, this is a great place to see and capture both the sunrise and sunset.

SRI LANKA: EAST COAST ROAD TRIP Jaffna | Trincomalee | Batticaloa | Passikudah | Arugam Bay
Exploring secret beaches, stunning food, temples, wildlife and surfers’ paradise on the undiscovered side of Sri Lanka. Read the full story here:
Sri Lanka is well-known as an island of contrasts. Thanks to a unique blend of climates, characters and cultures, visitors here can be sunbaked on a sweep of golden sand in the morning and, by afternoon, be pulling on a sweater in the mist-swirled, Scottish Highland-like peaks of Tea Country. I mean, where else on the planet can you watch blue whales in the Indian Ocean and wander around a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the same day? Even so, nowhere in Sri Lanka quite illustrates this island’s amazing contrariness like its coasts.
The west coast really needs no introduction. Buoyed by the close proximity of the island’s main gateway – Bandaranaike International Airport – it forms the backbone to most holiday checklists, featuring, as it does, some of Sri Lanka’s seminal tourist sights. From the beach resorts of Negombo and its hectic capital, Colombo, all the way down to the always-popular historic port and fort of Galle, it is a well-known and deservedly popular honeypot for travelers.
The east coast is the mirror opposite. Requiring a little more dedication to reach, it remains largely untouched and tourist-free, with the exception of its world-renowned surf Mecca – Arugam Bay. But aside from this enclave of hip boarders, those searching out a more serene and undiscovered experience of Sri Lanka should try weaving their way from Jaffna in the north to Okanda in the south, taking in Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Passikudah and Pottuvil. It’s a stunning ride and a legacy of the civil war is that the roads have been updated and repaired recently, meaning mostly frictionless flow from top to bottom, which is a rarity elsewhere on the island. The best way to experience it all is by car or van, with drivers and vehicles cheap to commission and giving travellers the chance to gape in wonder at the scenery and life drifting past the window.
Along the way, the east coast’s breathtaking array of temples, islands, wildlife parks and beaches reveal themselves to just as impressive as their west coast counterparts. Far more so, some would say. The major difference is that they are wonderfully quiet, retaining that sense of realness and character that is conducive to any true travel adventure. The differences don’t stop with ambience either. When the monsoon rains hammer the west coast, the east is bathed in sunshine. Aficionados of Sri Lankan cuisine will also note subtle shifts in spices and style that mean the food here is unlike the rest of the island. There are changes in the dialects of those cooking it too. This is because the west coast is largely Sinhalese, whereas the string of towns and villages on the east is mostly populated by Tamil and Muslim communities.
So for anyone seeking serenity, variety, character and off-the-beaten-path adventure, here’s our guide to Sri Lanka’s ultimate east coast road trip.

Sri Lanka is a year-round holiday destination with two monsoon seasons and is home to some incredible beaches on both sides of the island. If you want to go to the south and west coast of Sri Lanka the best time to visit is from December to April. For the east coast the time between April and August is best.
We start our journey in Beruwala and Bentota, this very long sand beach is without any doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka and only a 2h drive from the capital. The next stops are the beaches of Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna close to Galle.
Further down south you can find Mirissa, a relaxed little town which is a popular starting point for whale watching, too. Afterwards it’s time to spot some wildlife in the Yala National Park which has also a beach...but swimming is not allowed, so we’ll go for a leopard safari instead.
The east coast of Sri Lanka is still fairly unknown, therefore I decided to show you this part of the island more in-depth starting with Arugam Bay, a popular surf spot. Pasikudah is a longer drive to the north which is totally worth it - the locals even state it is the most beautiful beach in Sri Lanka!
Our last stop is Trincomalee in the north east of the country with its wide beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli. A short boat ride off the main land you should visit Pigeon island which has not only a beautiful beach but an incredible maritime life…so make sure to bring some snorkeling gear!
This part of the trip was executed within 2weeks by using buses, trains, cars and a domestic flight (Trincomalee-Colombo) - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do on the coast of Sri Lanka:
- Beruwala
- Bentota
- Hikkaduwa

- Arugam Bay
- Batticaloa & Kattankudy
- Kumana National Park
