Transcript:
Texas -- also known as the Lone Star state. It is the second largest state in the country with the second largest population in the country. You may hear people in the U.S. tell you that Texas feels like it is its own country -- and that is probably because it used to be. Texas was an independent nation for nine years back in the 19th century.
Texas has two of the seven largest cities in the U.S. -- Houston and San Antonio. It has one of the largest metropolitan centers in the country -- Dallas/Ft. Worth. Texas has a thriving cultural center in its state capital, Austin. Many films are made in the city, musical bands are discovered, and Austin is home to many artists. A short list of artists and performers include Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Tina Turner, Z.Z. Top, and Steve Martin. Texas also has just about every kind of geographic feature -- beaches, forests, plains, deserts, mountains, lakes, and rivers. In fact, often Texans forget that there are other countries or even other states out there.
The name of Texas originates from a Caddo Native American word meaning friend. It has a long history with six flags being raised over the state. A popular amusement park got its name from the six flags of Texas. Those flags are the old Spanish flag, the old French flag, the Mexican flag, the independent Texas flag, the U.S. flag and the Confederate flag.
Texas was sparsely populated until Mexico agreed to allow Americans to settle its northern territory. This ultimately led to a revolutionary victory by Sam Houston, the first president of Texas as well as the iconic battle for the Alamo in San Antonio.
After the Civil War, the ranching industry exploded and state's image as home to cowboys and cattle ranchers was born. Although the legendary cattle drives as reenacted in the movie, City Slickers were short lived, the image still transcends the state.
Texas was later transformed by the discovery of oil at Spindletop in 1901, adding the oil
derrick as yet another famous Texas symbol. To this day, the fictional J.R. Ewing from the TV series, Dallas, is one of the most popular Texans.
In 1961 the Johnson Space Center in Houston opened, which later played an instrumental role in the U.S. moon landing in 1969.
Texas has its share of important historical figures. Two presidents were born in Texas --
Dwight D. Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson. Eisenhower was the Supreme
Commander of the Allied Forces in World War II and LBJ was the president who pushed
through the momentous 1964 Civil Rights Act that brought the U.S. on the road to
establishing equality. Two other presidents have Texas roots, George H.W. Bush and
George W. Bush.
Where do I fit into the picture of Texas? Like many Texans, my parents were attracted to
the state's opportunities. My father worked as a chemical engineer. After moving around,
my parents settled on a suburb of Dallas, called Plano. Now Plano is the ninth largest city
in the state with about 260,000 people.
Growing up in Texas, you quickly learn what the most important thing in the entire state is -- American football. While the Dallas Cowboys remains America's team, Texans focus their passion on high school football. You may be familiar with the book, Friday Night Lights -- which then became a movie, and then a TV series. Although some of the story lines may have been a bit Hollywood, life in a Texas high school was pretty accurately portrayed.
I also have to mention the great universities in Texas. Of course, the students and alumnae will rave about the schools' football prowess, but universities like the University of Texas, Rice and Texas A&M, where I went to school, are recognized internationally for their great academics.
Finally, there is one more word to associate with Texas -- big. When you are in Texas, you will discover that everything is bigger -- cars, food, universities, you name it. It's just part of the Texas mentality.
I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about Texas and hope that you will get a chance to
experience it one day.

Santa Anna's troops attack and take the Alamo, Texas, 1836
Clip from The Last Command (1955; 110 min)
Jim Bowie sung by Gordon MacRae
The Last Command is a 1955 Trucolor Western film about Jim Bowie and the fall of the Alamo during the Texas War of Independence in 1836. Released during the Walt Disney Davy Crockett frenzy, the film follows Jim Bowie (Sterling Hayden), who was initially a friend to Generalissimo Antonio López de Santa Anna (J. Carrol Naish) but now sides with the Texans in their bid for independence.
The film was originally set to be produced and directed by John Wayne, but Republic Pictures head Herbert Yates wanted Wayne only to star, not produce or direct as Wayne wanted. Wayne left Republic to form Wayne-Fellows Productions. Five years later he would play Davy Crockett in, as well as direct, the three-hour-plus Todd-AO production The Alamo, released by United Artists, that featured many elements of The Last Command in its screenplay.
Metallica ~ For Whom The Bell Tolls .....(Remembering The Alamo)
I think it best to state here that this video is not meant as a comment on the situation currently unfolding at the United States southern border. This video is only intended as a recognition of the 183rd anniversary of the capture of the Alamo by the Mexican Army. Yes I'll agree that there are some similarities to the situation then and now. But if you research the subject of the Texas Revolution of 1835 - 36. You'll see there are also quite a few ironies woven into that story. For instance without the aid of people like Davy Crockett and his band of Tennessee Mountainmen, who were by the way considered illegal immigrants by the Mexican government. It's doubtful the Alamo would have stood for even one assault that day. Instead the Alamo defenders drove Santa Ana's troops back twice. And by the time the third attack finally succeeded in wiping out the Tejanos and their pesky American cousins. The Mexican Army had lost 600 men killed or wounded. Effectively reducing the Mexican forces by almost half. And dooming them to a humiliating defeat at the Battle of San Jacinto six weeks later. A classic case of winning the battle and losing the war.

mexamericanspt2texas1820 1830
Period of the early Mexican Republic brings changes to the far northern frontier. The California missions are secularized as the Catholic Church loses power and influence after 1833. Meanwhile the Mexican government liberalizes immigration policy and invites foreigners (including Americans) into Texas to populate and develop the region in the 1820's. Stephen Austin leads the first American settlers into Texas who agree to become Mexican citizens, become Catholics, and pay taxes to the Mexican government. Later, cultural/political conflicts with the central Mexican government under President Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana leads to the Texas Revolution. Among the leaders for Texas independence was the Tejano Juan Seguin who, like other Mexicans, fought against Santa Anna at the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto when Texas independence was won. Later, even though Seguin's family had lived in San Antonio for generations, he and his Tejano friends are labelled as outsiders and foreigners by later Euro American immigrants and he is forced to leave Texas in the late 1830's.

The Famous Battle of The Alamo!
In December 1835, during Texas’ war for independence from Mexico, a group of Texan volunteer soldiers occupied the Alamo, a former Franciscan mission located near the present-day city of San Antonio. On February 23, 1836, a Mexican force numbering in the thousands and led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna began a siege of the fort. Though vastly outnumbered, the Alamo’s 200 defenders–commanded by James Bowie and William Travis and including the famed frontiersman Davy Crockett–held out courageously for 13 days before the Mexican invaders finally overpowered them. For Texans, the Battle of the Alamo became an enduring symbol of their heroic resistance to oppression and their struggle for independence, which they won later that year.
The citizens of the independent Republic of Texas elected Sam Houston president but also endorsed the entrance of Texas into the Union. The likelihood of Texas joining the Union as a slave state delayed any formal action by the U.S. Congress for more than a decade. In 1844, Congress finally agreed to annex the territory of Texas. On December 29, 1845, Texas entered the United States as a slave state, broadening the irrepressible differences in the United States over the issue of slavery and setting off the Mexican-American War. -
