Australian state declares bushfire emergency - BBC News
The leader of Australia's eastern New South Wales state has declared a week-long state of emergency in response to the escalating bushfire threat.
High temperatures and strong winds are forecast for the weekend, leading to widespread extreme fire danger.
Troops are also preparing to evacuate some of the 4,000 people trapped by fires in neighbouring Victoria state.
Since September, bushfires have killed 18 people and destroyed more than 1,200 homes across NSW and Victoria.
At least 17 people remain missing after fires this week alone.

Flying through Australia's bushfires
A state of emergency has been declared in New South Wales as firefighters struggle to contain the flames caused by record heat in Australia.
Strong winds and high temperatures are expected to bring flames to more populated areas, including the suburbs of Sydney.
Sky's special correspondent Alex Crawford flew over some of the worst hit areas.

'Very dangerous' fire weather conditions affecting NSW | ABC News
The NSW Rural Fire Service says there have never before been so many fires burning at emergency level across the state and is warning conditions will worsen tonight.

Australia fires: nation braces for 'catastrophic' bushfire week
The NSW premier, Gladys Berejiklian, has declared a state of emergency as bushfires rage across the state. ‘We know the weather forecast for tomorrow is at catastrophic levels,’ Berejiklian said. The NSW rural fire commissioner, Shane Fitzsimmons, said that level was 'off the conventional scale' and even houses that were designed and built to withstand bushfires would not survive such extreme conditions. ’Catastrophic conditions are where people die’, he said. The declaration of a state of emergency means emergency services have authority to undertake whatever is deemed necessary and to use any resources to save lives

Australia fires: Fires worsen as every Australian state hits 40C - BBC News
Scores of fires are burning out of control across Australia amid a heatwave that has seen temperatures exceed 40C (104F) in every state.
The most dangerous fires on Monday were in the state of Victoria.
About 30,000 residents and tourists were urged to flee East Gippsland - a popular holiday region - but evacuations were later deemed too risky as fires encroached on major roads.
A volunteer firefighter died battling a blaze in the state of New South Wales.
The state's premier, Gladys Berejiklian, described the death as heartbreaking.
Words fail at times like this, she wrote on Twitter. Two others were taken to hospital with burns after battling the blaze, east of the city of Albury. It is believed their truck rolled over after being hit by extreme winds.

Thousands flee NSW South Coast ahead of horror fire weekend | ABC News
In New South Wales, holidaymakers stranded on the South Coast were today given a window to get out of the danger zone.
Food and fuel supplies are dwindling and anyone able to drive out faced long queues.

Australian firefighters took a perilous, flame-engulfed drive through bush fires, Tuesday, December 31, south of Nowra.

READ MORE: Thousands of people were forced to shelter on a beach to escape bush fires in the Australian state of Victoria. The seaside town of Mallacoota was surrounded by flames. There have been multiple emergency warnings in Victoria and New South Wales. At least two people have died and dozens of homes feared lost.
The sky in Mallacoota was turned a grotesque red as strong winds pushed out-of-control bush fires towards the popular seaside town about 500 kilometers east of Melbourne.
The New South Wales Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said this was the state’s worst bushfire season on record.

Aerial footage shows Australian bushfires raging in rural New South Wales
Footage taken by the NSW Rural Fire Service showed a bushfire sweeping through an area near Bemboka in the Bega Valley in south-east New South Wales.
The nearby area of Cobargo also experienced a fire-generated thunderstorm, according to the NSW Rural Fire Service. Authorities said that dry lightning could spark further flare-ups in Australia's fire-ravaged regions.
Bushfires have destroyed more than 4m hectares of forest and brush across Australia in recent weeks.

Two Australian states are bracing for a day of catastrophic risk as firefighters battle over 100 deadly active bushfires that have produced clouds of smoke seen as far away as New Zealand.
Thousands of people are in the paths of the blazes in the states of Queensland and New South Wales, which have both declared a state of emergency.

Australian firefighters capture moment their truck is overrun by a bushfire
The fire department of New South Wales, Australia posted a video on Tuesday showing one of their trucks surrounded by a raging fire. The crew was forced to shelter in their truck and used a blanket to keep the scorching air from coming in as the fire front passed through. Authorities confirmed two people had died overnight, taking to 11 the total deaths in wildfires since the beginning of October. The huge bushfires have destroyed more than 4 million hectares, with new blazes sparked into life almost daily by extremely hot and windy conditions in bushland left tinder dry after a three-year drought.
