Hotel Covington set to open for guests
COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - 100 years ago, it was a department store, 10 years ago it was Covington's city hall, but next week the corner of Seventh and Madison will be reborn again as the Hotel Covington.
Construction of the boutique hotel project was wrapping up. It was a $21million investment in the heart of Covington. The city was enjoying a lot of new growth and the hotel seemed to be sparking even more. The once-busy sales floor of the 1930's that was a gutted shell last fall was turned into an airy, half block long restaurant, bar and lobby to the new Hotel Covington. Some fine tuning work was still going on but the place was ready for guests.
Jack Olshan, Hotel Covington general manager, said, We've got people booked for Tuesday night. We have a great first week. I'm tickled to death with it. We'll have about 50% of the rooms up and running. We're putting the final touches on a few final floors.
114 guest rooms, 13 of them suites, fill the top 6 floors. Street level is an open, light-filled space with 18-foot ceilings. Coppin's restaurant, one of a few homages to the old department store, is a 110 seat restaurant with glass enclosed area they call the “jewel box.” It’s an outdoor seating area will open later in the fall 2016.
“We've got an amazing fireplace in there so even if it's a little chilly, we'll still be able to be out there serving cocktails and serving dinner,” said Olshan.
There's a full bar with lounge seating along a wall of windows on Seventh Street, a coffee bar, and a small, curated shop that sells locally-distilled liquor and locally-made gifts. By design, the Hotel Covington is across Seventh Street from the Madison Event Center, the developer's business that hosts hundreds of weddings each year. An arranged marriage but the hotel is attracting even more to the party. Across Madison, the owners of Rhinehaus and Nation in Cincinnati were developing the Hannaford, a bar named for the famous architect.
Proprietor for The Hannaford, Andrew Salzbrun, said, It was the reason we ended up here. It's something that we're excited to be a part of in terms of a partnership with the hotel to be able to offer an enhanced experience to the guests when they stay at the hotel that they have a solid offering across the street.
All of it is taking place within a block of Braxton Brewery, a recently-revived Covington Chili, and the proposed Duveneck Square apartments. A lot going on; new life in the heart of an old northern Kentucky city.
About half the rooms in the hotel Covington will be ready for guests next week. They hope to have the remaining rooms ready in the next several weeks.

Food in the Garden 2014: New Orleans
New Orleans has always been a crossroads of people, ideas, and products. What was created out of this dynamic interplay of people and products at this global crossroads of New Orleans? At the heart of NOLA are the people, a very diverse population ranging from Native Americans, French, Spanish, Africans, and other subsequent waves of immigrants. Drawing from abundant natural marine resources, adding diverse foods from around the world through merchants and settlers, the NOLA population created one of the most unique and influential foodscapes in the world. The markets and new migrants continue to thrive and draw from the many unique cultural and natural resources of the area.
Panelists: Ashley Young, historian of food markets and street food culture in the 19th century; and David Guas, chef/owner of Bayou Bakery, Coffee Bar & Eatery in Arlington, VA [and coming Winter 2014 to Washington, DC] and host of American Grilled on Travel Channel.

SUMMARY
=======
Louisiana is a state in the Deep South region of the southeastern United States. It is the 31st most extensive and the 25th most populous of the 50 United States. Louisiana is bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and the state of Texas to the west. A large part of its eastern boundary is demarcated by the Mississippi River. Louisiana is the only U.S. state with political subdivisions termed parishes, which are equivalent to counties. The state's capital is Baton Rouge, and its largest city is New Orleans.
Much of the state's lands were formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River, leaving enormous deltas and vast areas of coastal marsh and swamp. These contain a rich southern biota; typical examples include birds such as ibis and egrets. There are also many species of tree frogs, and fish such as sturgeon and paddlefish. In more elevated areas, fire is a natural process in the landscape, and has produced extensive areas of longleaf pine forest and wet savannas. These support an exceptionally large number of plant species, including many species of terrestrial orchids and carnivorous plants. Louisiana has more Native American tribes than any other southern state, including four that are federally recognized, ten that are state recognized, and four that have not received recognition.Some Louisiana urban environments have a multicultural, multilingual heritage, being so strongly influenced by a mixture of 18th-century French, Haitian, Spanish, Native American, and African cultures that they are considered to be exceptional in the US. Before the American purchase of the territory in 1803, present-day Louisiana State had been both a French colony and for a brief period a Spanish one. In addition, colonists imported numerous African people as slaves in the 18th century. Many came from peoples of the same region of West Africa, thus concentrating their culture. In the post-Civil War environment, Anglo-Americans increased the pressure for Anglicization, and in 1921, English was for a time made the sole language of instruction in Louisiana schools before a policy of multilingualism was revived in 1974. There has never been an official language in Louisiana, and the state constitution enumerates the right of the people to preserve, foster, and promote their respective historic, linguistic, and cultural origins.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Hurricane Katrina was an extremely destructive and deadly Category 5 hurricane that struck the Gulf Coast of the United States in August 2005, causing catastrophic damage from central Florida to eastern Texas. Subsequent flooding, caused largely as a result of fatal engineering flaws in the flood protection system around the city of New Orleans, precipitated most of the loss of lives. The storm was the third major hurricane of the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the fourth-most intense tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in the United States, behind only the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, Hurricane Camille in 1969, and Hurricane Michael in 2018.
The storm originated over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005, from the merger of a tropical wave and the remnants of Tropical Depression Ten. Early on the following day, the new tropical depression intensified into a tropical storm and headed generally westward toward Florida, strengthening into a hurricane only two hours before making landfall at Hallandale Beach and Aventura on August 25. After very briefly weakening again to a tropical storm, Katrina emerged into the Gulf of Mexico on August 26 and began to rapidly intensify. The storm strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf, but weakened before making its second landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on August 29, over southeast Louisiana and Mississippi. As Katrina made landfall, its front right quadrant, which held the strongest winds, slammed into Gulfport, Mississippi, devastating it.Overall, at least 1,836 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods, making Katrina the deadliest United States hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. Severe property damage occurred in numerous coastal areas, such as Mississippi beachfront towns where boats and casino barges rammed buildings, pushing cars and houses inland; water reached 6–12 miles (10–19 km) from the beach. Total property damage was estimated at $125 billion (2005 USD), roughly four times the damage wrought by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, tying Katrina with Hurricane Harvey of 2017 as the costliest Atlantic tropical cyclone on record.Over fifty breaches in surge protection levees surrounding the city of New Orleans, Louisiana were the cause of the majority of the death and destruction during Katrina. Eventually 80% of the city, as well as large tracts of neighboring parishes, became flooded, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks. Most of the transportation and communication networks servicing New Orleans were damaged or disabled by the flooding, and tens of thousands of people who had not evacuated the city prior to landfall became stranded with little access to food, shelter or basic necessities. The scale of the disaster in New Orleans provoked massive national and international response efforts; federal, local and private rescue operations evacuated displaced persons out of the city over the following weeks.
