Beaumont Wines with Sebastian Beaumont #040
Sebastian Beaumont has been a member of the prestigious “Cape Winemakers Guild” since 2016. Only the best oenologists in South Africa are accepted. This exclusive award is strictly bound to the person and not to the winery. “The Chenin-Dude” is a tribute to Sebastian as his Chenin Blanc “Hope Marguerite” always receives the highest award from five stars from the leading South African wine critic Platter.
With “Hope Marguerite”, that was the name of the “characterful and elegant grandmother”, Beaumont annually sets the benchmark for this grape variety on the Cape. The wine is matured from 40 year old vines in 400 l wooden barrels. It stays 10 months on his yeast. Further Sebastian devotes his love for South African grape varieties also for his red wines. His Pinotage, grows on 42-year-old vines and matures for 18 months in French oak barrels. With its freshness and minerality it becomes a typical cool climate Pinotage from the Bot River Valley.
Bot River is just 8 km from the Atlantic Ocean. Cool sea winds ensure not too hot days and cool nights. This gives the wines of Beaumont their fresh character. The farm was built in the 17th century. Established as an outpost of the Dutch East India Company. Sebastian’s parents, Raoul and Jayne Beaumont, who acquired the estate in 1974, restored the historic buildings and the oldest mill in the region, which belonged to them, in the typical Overberg style. The whitewashed cottages also house guests. After wine tasting accompanied by regional food, wine lovers will continue exploring along the “Green Mountain Eco Route”. The Beaumonts are co-founders of this institution dedicated to the harmony between wine, tourism and nature conservation.
Raoul and Jayne have also replanted the vineyards since 1974, but only years later brought their first wine, a Pinotage, on the market. About 2011, Jancis Robinson, the international wine goddess, wrote that he was the best she had ever tasted. Apart from the South African specialties Chenin Blanc and Pinotage, Beaumont also relies on the French varieties Mourvèdre, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet. Sebastian, who has been responsible for the development of the wines since 2004, composes them into fruitful, complex red wine cuvées.
The flagship wine is the harmonious red wine cuvée Vitruvian – named after an important part of their grain mill, which was already designed by the ancient architect and engineer Vitruvius. Leonardo da Vinci has drawn his so-called Vitruvian man – stretched out in a wheel and square – in ideal proportions to the ideal proportions of a well-formed person from the textbooks of this architect. Symbol of balance and harmony. Sebastian Beaumont seeks nothing else for his wines (December 05. 2011).
