Cheryl Forchuk - 2014 Distinguished University Professor Lecture
Dr. Cheryl Forchuk, a professor in Western University's Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing with a cross-appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, has been an active faculty member at Western for more than 15 years. As a professor and associate director of Nursing Research in the Arthur Labatt School of Nursing, she has established herself as an internationally acclaimed researcher in the area of recovery and community integration for people with mental illness.
Dr. Forchuk uses the Participatory Action Research approach to engage mental health service consumers, clinical agencies and housing services, which has involved multiple, long-term relationships with community agencies, hospitals and the homeless sector, and led to developing a transitional discharge model of care based on continuous therapeutic relationships as the client transitions from hospital to community living.
Dr. Forchuk's record of service to the university, and the broader research community, is exemplary, said Jim Weese, Health Sciences dean. She is an effective builder, a collaborative scholar, and we are truly fortunate to have her as a member of our faculty. She represents the very best we have to offer. She is a credit to the university and a powerful ambassador of the good that can come from an academic institution.
Since obtaining her doctorate in 1992, Dr. Forchuk's research has garnered more than $11 million in external funding as a primary investigator. She is currently the primary investigator on eight grants and co-investigator on six more. Dr. Forchuk has published 82 peer-review journals, written 35 book chapters and presented more than 300 papers since coming to Western in 1997.

This Mayor Runs A Trillion Dollar Economy
Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles, is not pleased with our President — or his own party. But his policies in LA may portend a movement that could take him all the way to the White House.
Garcetti was elected four times by his peers to serve as President of the Los Angeles City Council from 2006 to 2012. From 2001 until taking office as Mayor, he served as the Councilmember representing the 13th District which includes Hollywood, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and Atwater Village -- all of which were dramatically revitalized under Garcetti's leadership.
Garcetti was raised in the San Fernando Valley and earned his B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University. He studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and the London School of Economics and taught at Occidental College and USC. A fourth generation Angeleno, he and his wife, Amy Elaine Wakeland, have a young daughter. He is a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy reserve and is an avid jazz pianist and photographer.

Timeline of United States inventions (1890–1945)
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
A timeline of United States inventions (1890–1945) encompasses the ingenuity and innovative advancements of the United States within a historical context, dating from the Progressive Era to the end of World War II, which have been achieved by inventors who are either native-born or naturalized citizens of the United States. Copyright protection secures a person's right to his or her first-to-invent claim of the original invention in question, highlighted in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution which gives the following enumerated power to the United States Congress:
In 1641, the first patent in North America was issued to Samuel Winslow by the General Court of Massachusetts for a new method of making salt. On April 10, 1790, President George Washington signed the Patent Act of 1790 (1 Stat. 109) into law which proclaimed that patents were to be authorized for any useful art, manufacture, engine, machine, or device, or any improvement therein not before known or used. On July 31, 1790, Samuel Hopkins of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, became the first person in the United States to file and to be granted a patent under the new U.S. patent statute. The Patent Act of 1836 (Ch. 357, 5 Stat. 117) further clarified United States patent law to the extent of establishing a patent office where patent applications are filed, processed, and granted, contingent upon the language and scope of the claimant's invention, for a patent term of 14 years with an extension of up to an additional 7 years. From 1836 to 2011, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a total of 7,861,317 patents relating to several well-known inventions appearing throughout the timeline below. Some examples of patented inventions between the years 1890 and 1945 include John Froelich's tractor (1892), Ransom Eli Olds' assembly line (1901), Willis Carrier's air-conditioning (1902), the Wright Brothers' airplane (1903), and Robert H. Goddard's liquid-fuel rocket (1926).
The Fierce Urgency of How: A Talk by Dov Seidman
Unprecedented and unfamiliar forces are reshaping our world, our institutions and our leadership faster than we seem able to reshape ourselves. With one click, the dreams, frustrations, plights, and behaviors of others are experienced viscerally and directly on our screens. With just one swipe, we can summon strangers into our intimate proximity. Simultaneously, any one of us can see into the innermost workings of once opaque organizations and importantly, into the attitudes and behaviors of their leaders. These very forces of connection have, in many remarkable ways, afforded us richer experiences and enabled human progress. But they are also fracturing us and presenting us with unprecedented moral choices.
In this lecture, Dov Seidman, CEO of LRN and author of HOW: Why HOW We Do Anything Means Everything, will discuss the implications of our reshaped world and the imperatives that creates for leaders, and for each of us.

Chris Dixon: Ghost Wave | Talks at Google
Chris Dixon discusses his non-fiction book about Cortes Bank, the submerged mountain that is 100-miles southwest of Los Angeles. Said to create some of the largest waves on the planet, it is a dangerous and seductive place for big wave surfers who risk their lives trying to surf it. Chris researched the history of this mysterious place, from the ancient people that lived on the neighboring islands to the first sailors that attempted to map the California Coast and nearly died in the waves of Cortes Bank. Fielding audience questions after the presentation, Chris is joined by surf photographers Rob Brown and Jason Murray, along with big wave surfing legends Jeff Clark, Ken Skindog Collins, and Greg Long.

Gary's powerful and enlightening message has been heard by more than 60,000 students in 170 middle schools, high schools and universities nationwide, including UTEP, U. of Florida, Georgia Tech and Fresno State. Gary uses thought-provoking prose, inspiring stories, indisputable facts, quotes from Pythagoras, William Ralph Inge and other great thinkers, plus graphic footage from slaughterhouses (land and sea), to ask people to be kind to animals and, ultimately, go vegan.
Steve Phillips on The New American Majority | Bob Herbert's Op-Ed.TV
If there is one thing that is virtually certain every four years, it’s that the Democratic presidential candidate will spend an awful of time, energy and money trying to win the support of the so-called white swing voters.
The very name is telling. Swing voters! It’s as if by definition they are the voters who count the most.
Guest Steve Phillips says that quadrennial effort is nonsense, a waste of time and resources. America has changed, he says, and there’s a whole different population that Democrats need to focus on.
Phillips elaborates on this in his new book, “Brown Is The New White: How the Demographic Revolution Has Created a New American Majority,” and he joins Bob Herbert to expand on this issue.
Taped: 04-26-16
Bob Herbert's Op-Ed.TV is a weekly half-hour program featuring interviews with significant men and women from a variety of fields: officeholders and activists, economists, labor leaders, writers and artists. Herbert, a longtime journalist and former columnist for The New York Times, takes a close look each week at a compelling contemporary issue. He elicits personal stories and insights into the character of each guest, revealing not just what they believe about a particular issue, but why they believe it.
